Sex Tape (2014)
Sometimes hilarious but a lot of times just uncomfortable.
So this film has its humor, there are a lot of ways to make a plot like this funny. However, the plot itself doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, and the good hilarious parts seem to be sandwiched between really awkward and uncomfortable moments. They emphasize the "sex" part of sex tape a lot, and while dirty jokes are obviously going to get some laughs, I felt the writers went a little overboard and diminished the film's merit as a whole. Especially in the beginning, they made Jason Segel's character like an awkward porn star and it was just weird to me. Still, there were definitely times I was cracking up during this film, so if you can stomach the weirdness and uncomfortable sex jokes I'd go see this if you've got nothing better to do.
A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)
Could have been so much better
Don't get me wrong. This was a funny movie, but it is no where near Ted or Family Guy or typical Macfarlane work. There were too many actual serious, regular romantic comedy stuff in this. I wasn't looking to see a typical romantic comedy where a wussy sheep farmer overcome his own fears and get the woman of his dreams, I was wanting to see a slap-stick western that was all Family Guy style humor, and while it was there in parts the trailer gave the best moments from the movie. I went in expecting to laugh a lot more. In addition, I feel like some of the characters could've been better. Theron and Harris were great, but I was disappointed in Liam Neeson's character. I was expecting a more funny villain, instead Neeson played an actual asshole outlaw (when he shot that old man at the beginning I felt that was way too dark for this type of movie).
So overall this movie is funny, but not up to Macfarlane's usual standards, the funny parts were sandwiched between romantic comedy, serious stuff and I just felt like this made the movie seem rushed and out of sync. 6/10
White House Down (2013)
Not nearly as bad as the reviews say
This movie got a lot of hate, apparently people were expecting an Academy Award film...but honestly if you go into this movie expecting Oscar- winning performances you'll be disappointed. That said, Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and James Woods acted very well, especially the chemistry between Foxx and Tatum. I thought this movie was a fast-paced action- filled thriller that did not disappoint, and while it may not be realistic (I mean really who expected that?), what Die-Hard-like action movie is? The humor was what really set this film apart for me, I was cracking up the whole way through. And even though it may be cliché, just turn your brain off and enjoy an intense, comical, and heart-pounding action movie. I don't know why this did so poorly at the box office, I would assume if they hadn't released it so close after Olympus Has Fallen it might have done better. Regardless, I would definitely recommend this film if you're into thrillers with a lot of humor mixed into it!
The Mentalist: Red John (2013)
A Lackluster Ending for a Villain that Deserved So Much More
For 5 years the Mentalist has been chasing this god-like enigma that always seemed to be three steps ahead, that always stayed in the shadows. This finale for him does not give Red John the credit he deserves, both in his identity, the way he is revealed, and the way Jane stops him. This mastermind has been set up as a vicious killer who never seems to lose, and in this episode he is revealed as a bumbling old man from the first season that no one really remembers. This identity just doesn't fit for me. Heller was running out of clues and decided to abruptly end the Red John story with "oh, let's just make him that guy." This sheriff person is the guy that Jane beat 6 times in a row at rock paper scissors. The character is just too much of an idiotic random side character and I don't think he is the best fit for a serial killer. And the way that Jane stopped him I found to be absolutely ridiculous. Are we seriously expected to believe that Jane was able to sneak in a live pigeon, that the bodyguard who found the gun on him somehow missed? I just think the whole magician image Heller was going for was taken way too far, and for some reason Red John just decides "hey, this guy is probably pretty angry that I killed his family and all, so I'm just gonna go accept his mysterious thing that he has to show me..." Red John's intellect that has been so hyped up for 5 years all vanishes in this dull character (which is no discredit to the actors, they did very well with the limited information they had). Also, as the show's main villain and focus for 5 years, I felt that we should get to know Red John a little, maybe an episode about his life. For someone who has had such an impact on the series for 5 years, I feel Red John deserves more than a 10 minute monologue and a quick death. Plus, I hated how cowardly they decided to make him, that's not what Red John was set up to be at all. The only reason I am giving this episode 4 stars is for the acting of Baker, he was fantastic. Otherwise, this episode thoroughly trashed 5 years of fantastic episodes. I hope that the series can redeem itself for the rest of this season.
This Is the End (2013)
Absolutely Hysterical!!
Comedies are always hit or miss, you either like them or you don't. But, if you are a fan of movies like 21 Jump Street, The Hangover, and other R- Rated comedies, you will probably find this movie hilarious! The idea of it is unique, having actors play themselves. This way, you can really see how much fun the actors had making this, and the jokes feel a lot more natural, none seem forced and it's equivalent to spending a fun night with your friends. Also, the script was very well written and creative, the writers were able to make a hysterical comedy out of the Rapture, and poke fun at religion. That being said, if you are uptight or very religious, this is definitely not the movie for you. But, if you are a fan of dirty, raunchy, and offensive humor (again, movies like the Hangover), I guarantee you'll find this movie hilarious. The jokes never let up, while all might not hit, you'll easily be able to find hilarious lines that you won't forget. This is the End is an original and non-stop laugh-fest!
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
An Excellent Thriller with a Thought-Provoking Message and Ending
First off this movie was outstanding in terms of acting and suspense. Gerard Butler's performance was fantastic, you could really feel how anger and a desire to take justice into his own hands had overwhelmed him. The torture of Darvey scene was chilling and very well done, and the extensiveness of Shelton's plan to "bring the whole system down" was impressive. I've seen almost every review here criticize the ending of this movie, and honestly when I first read them I hadn't seen the ending yet, and based on the reviews I thought it would be some depressing ending where Clyde succeeds in his plan and kills Nick's family or something. But, when I saw the ending I honestly didn't think it was nearly as bad as people say. I can see where some people would be angry that Shelton was killed, since he was the man who had lost everything and wanted to overcome a corrupt justice system. But, I felt that the message of this movie and the dynamic character of Nick is meant to provoke thought and inquiry about who was really in the wrong. While the legal system isn't perfect, Nick was able to get some justice, and I honestly feel that Clyde could've stopped once he had killed Darvey and gotten his revenge. But, his desire to share his pain with those who had wronged him is when a person can choose to like or dislike him. For me, I felt that taking innocent lives of the justice department warranted the ending. The last lines of the movie, the last confrontation between Clyde and Nick was excellent, the dialogue between the two was one of the best parts of the movie. So, I really like the ending, but I can see where some wouldn't. Either way, the message of the movie is unique, and the acting, dialogue, and suspense make this movie a must see! I'd definitely recommend it if you're into suspense and can stomach a few gory scenes.
