Breathe In (2013)
A waste of a film
This was a beautifully made film with incredible tender moments, extremely self indulgent as it is (and boy is it). All of Drake Doremus' movies are similarly self indulgent and strange not-so-Hollywood ideas of love and tenderness. I'm always here for it.
This one though... this one crushed my soul with the end. Maybe it was meant to be a very depressing end, because that's what it was. Maybe it's realism in that respect, and of course I wanted something different (I don't even know what because the emotional affair alone is pretty wrong!).
Aside from this disappointment it really is supremely well crafted. To the person who can't figure out why it's rated R and said there's no violence - I mean sure, if you don't count the high school boy trying to rape the young girl. Aside from that things don't have to be gratuitous to actually be sexual or violent. Not to mention the inappropriate relationship is a good thing not to glamorize for teenagers.
2149: The Aftermath (2016)
All I can think...
Is how absolutely scammed Molly Parker must feel having agreed to do such low budget trash. Either that or WHAT was she thinking. My lawd.
I'll watch any science fiction even if it's trash but this is one of the few I'm not making it through. PHEWY.
Wonder Wheel (2017)
God, just so BORING
How Allen made a quadruplet of powerhouses like this case bore me to death I don't know.
Just another Woody Allen fantasy of manipulation and power games where the women end up "crazy" and worse.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Zack Snyder tried to do John Carpenter and fails miserably
Honestly that's it really. He tried to do good bad and came away with bad bad instead. There were brief great moments but they were entirely down to cast chemistry. The writing was so beyond derivative and boring, and the slow mo... oh my god... no one wants to watch a curtain moving for 6 whole seconds in an action movie come on.
The Hunt (2020)
I literally fell asleep
Ok, sure I didn't sleep well last night but I was so bored. It's not the worst attempt at political horror satire ever but it both failed to be funny and scary, it wasn't even surprising. Even when the Big Bad was revealed it was so uninteresting that's when I started to doze off.
The American political atmosphere is utterly bizarre to those of us outside the US and sadly the absurdity of the film didn't really compliment that, just made it even more uncomfortable. I couldn't tell whether the creators wanted to make us sympathize for people who'd be happy killing others with their guns if the tables weren't being turned on them, but they sure made me hate all the catchphrases and conspiracy theories even more than I usually do!
The real shame of it is that I think the actors did a grand job with what they had and there were some real stars who given the opportunity with a better premise and script could have been truly funny AND frightening.
Lastly, the effects weren't just low budget they were cringe af.
