I started watching it yesterday and stopped half way around because I couldn't take it. Today I decided to force myself to finish it and failed around last quarter again. Finally finished it in my third try. How come critics and people rate this so high? Last 10 years people brain washed by Hollywood so badly, it seems many people don't even remember what is a good movie anymore. Apparently all they need is some artsy CGI and fancy sets in the end. But this is not an art exhibition, it's a movie.
It felt like Terry Gilliam decided to make new movie, Wes Anderson jumped in to it to bring colors and colorful customes and then David Lynch got there to make it into a thematic film. The imagination worked on the sets, locations and costumes, and Emma Store's pure beauty fits perfectly although certain scenes made me think that they've been generated through AI. But when it comes to writing a script, they stuck in modern Hollywood's Activism themes. They had to go with Feminism and it turned this possibly interesting story into a horrible disaster. Apparently no one can write something fresh that you can connect or imagine anymore. Summary of the movie is full of pathetic, weak and disgusting men (what a surprise) on one hand, and pure, adventurer, strong and "free" 160 IQ Bella on the other. Her inorganic improvement is the result of forced Hollywood themes and it's difficult to make a connection. They've become so obvious with this charade, you see them coming from miles away. By the way, sex scenes or soft porn level material is not an issue for me as long as it contributes to bigger picture. But aimless nudity and sex scenes become pretty boring even it's featuring a goddess like Emma Stone.
Funny thing is, I don't even need to mark "this review contains spoilers" when I post this review. Because whenever a new movie comes out in the last 5 years, majority of them have been pretty much same empty, boring characters in it with forced script. The only good thing about this film is, it's not a "remake". At least it tries to be its own even though it contains so many references and influences from many other movies.
