Invasion: Going Home (2021)
Are we there yet?
Slow, boring. Unbelievably slow story; and even given that this is an alien story, the story defies logic.
Aneesha Malik's character looks like a lost puppy dog running from place to place... even more so now than before. The British kids were being bothered by a Boris Johnson-to-be. They use words like shank, shag, wank, as it all of those words are normal. (is this how British kids speak?)
The episode looks like what the Titanic-sinking would look like if it took 1 month to sink into the Atlantic.. and was being live streamed.
The Japanese finally figure out that its an alien attack; just as the US President (a woman !) tells us its an alien attack.
We finally do get to see an alien, so that is the saving grace of this episode.
Time to move on.
Lightyear (2022)
Oh God! Someone help me.
This movie is beyond sad.
There were many, many ways to spin off from the originals. These folks picked up the worst of all ideas and stitched it together into a movie that is so bad, it should be banned.
The story is impossible; no matter what happens, the villain gets the upper hand, but... never fear, the good guys will beat the villain... but hold on... the villain has another trick up his sleeve, and so on, and so on.
If Buzz Lightyear were really a space cadet, he would have failed his first day at the academy and then been sent home.
Which is where I wish was after the first 10 minutes.
God help us.
Black Death (2010)
Completely pointless movie
When I saw Sean Bean, I thought the movie would be worth watching.. but alas. After the movie was over, I thought "what's the point" ?
Good realistic cinematography, good acting, etc, etc.. all going to waste on a movie that does not tie the story together well.
Shut Eye: Ace of Swords (2016)
Roma wedding & all
I love the series... I have no idea what a Roma wedding is to look like. The story seems believable in terms of being representative of what it may look like.
This wedding episode is a little far fetched - how does the whole magic trick work so well ?
Charlie and his wife plan an audacious plan to neutralize all their enemies ALL at one go. Its a clever trick.. almost works.
Captive State (2019)
Nicely done
Good story. The grim situation where the world is ruled by Aliens, via human intermediaries is depicted well. I especially liked the scene where all the conspirators are riding down the elevator with serious faces, the music added to the somber feel. Goodman does a fantastic job of being a super efficient cop, working on behalf of the Aliens; you hate him for being so good. Overall a great movie - not sure why it went under the radar screen. I never heard of it till it was on cable..
Ad Astra (2019)
Disappointing story
Great special effects and acting. However, the story does not quite make sense ... even at the end, one wonders. The plot does not hang well together.. Disappointing. The 3 stars are for the exceptional spl effects.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Very disappointing
Right in the beginning, you know how the movie is going to end...the good guys are going to win. How anti-climactic that was.. The stage is not set right (half of all humanity is gone, but the enormity of that is not explored...)...when you have Thanos give his explanation as to why he did what he did, I found myself thinking - well, he actually has a point.
In the meanwhile, every single superhero is given time to fight, say some cute things, some say a few smart things, a few even manage to say profoundly philosophical statements...
The quantum physics explanations used to explain how things are done, are plainly non sense... ..they just made stuff up as they went on.
Alls well that ends well. Except we spent 3 hours to find that out.
Star Trek: Discovery: The Vulcan Hello (2017)
Things go downhill from here on...
Problems with STD
1. The entire series revolves around Michael Burnam.
2. The ethics and good behavior that we had expected from the charectars in the original series are gone.
3. The Federation actually has a Black ops division (31), which does covert ops...!
4. Acting, story, etc, are tenuous at best.
5. No effort is spared in 'bending science'....you need power to do something..well "we have abc we can convert in our special transformer to intercept xyz, and achieve what we want to do"...and viola ! It works.
Good CGI, which is probably the only good thing here.
Sad, sad, sad...
Star Trek: Discovery: Perpetual Infinity (2019)
Seriously???
I was a fan of Star Trek growing up. Clearly, the logic, acting, and drama we see in this series is a sad decline from the baseline we are used to.
Even so, this particular episode takes it to a new low level.
In the original Star Trek, the crew would never deem itself to be so arrogant as to try to change something that would have to occur per the laws of nature...but here...not so.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Best sci fi action in a long time !!!
Amazing story, and amazing special effects !
Usually sci fi movies and series have either a good story or good special effects, but not both. This is a unique experience.
More gore and violence than needed...thats the only criticism.
In Search of Fellini (2017)
Coming out of a childhood fantasy..
Nice movie. Lucy is so over protected by her (single) mom who does not want her hurt by the 'lessons of life', that she is not even told that her dog dies, when it does. Lucy gets greeting cards from her dog that went 'off on an adventure'. So, when she is 20, and her mom is obviously declining in health, she is lost. A chance encounter with a screening of a Fellini movie leads to an obsession, and then, she takes off for a somewhat half baked trip to Italy. She has an appointment to keep with Fellini, which she sets up over the phone! Many practical details are glossed over (where did she get a passport, if mom was so protective, etc?). The movie shines in interweaving fantasy and her dreamlike state with reality and her mother's experiences with her own. This is not 'realism' by any stretch.. towards the end, we are rewarded with a young self confident woman, who has learned a lot of life lessons from her Italy trip.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Please pick competent people for a space mission, or you will be eaten by an Alien.
This is the sequel to Prometheus. So, it goes from bad to worse. Story sucks, soooo many holes in the story, where does one start? First rule of space travel - pick competent people who don't go berserk at the first sign of stress, follow orders, don't compromise the entire crew because their spouse is danger, etc. Pick a good second and third in command. And then, if you are coming off a planet that has flesh eating aliens, scan your self when come onto the spaceship. If you put a bunch of mentally unstable idiots in charge of a multi-billion dollar space mission, then, expect..."The Alien Covenant" ! Even if you are a die hard fan of the Alien series, don't bother watching this. I remember watching the first few Alien movies and being awed by them. Even with the the old, not-so-sophisticated special effects, those movies were better. I am afraid of what comes next. The next Alien movie is going to be soo bad, that even the trailer will need to be avoided.
Quand on a 17 ans (2016)
A nice coming of age movie.
Nice story telling. The striking thing about this movie for me was the superb acting by Sandrine Kiberlain, who plays the doctor-mom, Marianne. The story is well written, and I can see why some of the reviewers seem to find fault with it, eg., "why did she invite her son's bully to stay with them ?"...but the way the story flows, it does not seem unbelievable. Some of the human elements are fantastic: when Thomas finds out his step-mother is pregnant, he tells Marianne that at last she will have a real child - to which she replies 'there are no fake children'. The delivery of dialogue here is fantastic. Same, when she finds out, finally, why the 2 boys have been fighting - her dialogue delivery and demeanor are superlative. The military funeral is done well too. The scenery has been used to good effect. The scenes of snow falling, driving in the snow, and of the isolated lakes where the boys go swimming in the nude in the middle of winter all add to the sense of isolation that Thomas has been used to living in.
