Chernobyl (2021)
Love the vibe of the 80s
The problem with some viewers nowadays is that they have been so obsessed with facts and all the little details to be in movies yet forgetting that not all movies have to be accurate for cinematic purposes. There are documentaries for this category. Anyway, the movie is very entertaining and to see the catastrophe head-on gives us a glimpse of what could happen in certain disasters as terrible as the Chernobyl accident.
Give it a try and watch it with an open mind. Chernobyl is just the backdrop of the story, yet full of love.
Wicker Park (2004)
Adapted Screenplay from L'Appartement
***May contain spoilers***
This movie is way too inferior compared to the 1998 BAFTA winner for Best Film not in the English Language "L'Appartement" where this movie was based. The chemistry between Josh Hartnett and Diane Kruger is so weak and the former's acting is always the same with regard to his previous films.
I am so sorry but even my Mom told me that they're acting is not really convincing. To those who haven't seen the original, please watch it. You will start to compare how talented the actors Vincent Cassell and Monica Bellucci are compared to the actors from this movie.
The Great Raid (2005)
The Great Raid
Spoilers...
I watched this film yesterday (First Day) and all I could say is that it exceeded my expectations. The length of the movie did not bother me because the scenes were executed finely and according to some of the reviews I read, was at most historically accurate. With regard to the cast, a lot of character development came from James Franco (Spider-Man), and supporting roles from Benjamin Bratt (Catwoman) and Ralph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love). Of course our very own Cesar Montano (Jose Rizál) who was very "brown" and symbolically represented the "guerilleros" at that time was always at his best. One of the strongest and breath-taking scenes were showing the City of Manila, with a street filled with streetcars (named Meralco), churches, business establishments and the Pasig River which was the gateway of commerce. It was mentioned at the movie how magnificent the city was and why it was called the "Pearl of the Orient" because it served as a link between Europe, The Americas and Asia. Signs of corruption were evident. There were some inconsistencies in the Tagalog dialect but overall the film justified what happened back then. :-)
Alexander (2004)
Oliver Stone's Another Masterpiece
I had the opportunity of watching the film this weekend on one of the major movie houses here in Manila, and I was happy to know that it was on SRO (Standing Room Only) and did good in the box office. I just observed that Filipinos have come to understand and have become mature in dealing plots that are controversial and have become more intelligent in the type of movies they watch.
This film has again proved that Oliver Stone is one of the top-caliber directors in Hollywood, therefore proving 'Fortune favours the bold'. I loved the film and I intend to purchase a copy soon and add it to my collection including 'Heaven and Earth' and 'Platoon'.
Colin Farrell did good in this movie and has exceeded our expectations for his portrayal as Alexander. His acting is worthy of winning an Oscar. Not to forget the rest of the cast, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, Rosario Dawson and Val Kilmer.
Its just sad to know that bad publicities and overrated criticisms are causing some moviegoers not to watch the film.
Palabra de honor (1983)
Philippines' Finest Actors/Actresses
May contain SPOILERS!
I had the opportunity of seeing the movie yesterday (I borrowed the video from a Shop) and I was really impressed how good the film was. The pace is fast, the delivery of the dialog is well said, and full of tagalog idioms.
The movie was comprised of the best and finest actors and actresses of the Philippines then and now. The patriarch is led by multi-awarded Eddie Garcia, who has been in the industry for more than 4 decades. Followed by the late Dindo Fernando, Ronaldo Valdez (known as the arch-rival of Sadek in 'Banawe'), Tommy Abuel and Mark Gil (Batch '81).
The ladies include Hilda Koronel (Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag), Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969), Amy Austria, Beth Bautista and the ever beautiful Jackie Lou Blanco who now concentrates in weight management and body building.
For those who want to know and learn more about Philippine Cinema, this is film is highly recommended.
