Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Boring
Base on the trailer, I should really enjoy this kind of star war -ish movie. All the ingredients are there, cool female lead, amazing action scenes, thousand out of nowhere slowmo. But I just can't stand how boring this movie are.
1. ACTING. If you have seen enough scifi movie and TV shows, you already know what will happen, so the only thing director can do to keep your attention from slip away is write interesting characters and creating great chemistry between main characters. I recognize almost every single characters, all of them are capable of giving actual performance. But all there interaction feel like so blatant.
2. CONTENT. Feel like director extrude a 8 episode tv series into a movie. Too much checking boxes the characters have to check, rushing from one place to another, as a consequence as a audience you don't really care any of them. You don't care the good guy get killing for helping the protagonist, you don't even care the betray in the end, because you simply don't care any of them getting killed of not. I simply don't understand why Zack urgency to rush and squeeze so much plots into Part I. He should really watch Dune part I, that's how you do a proper part I.
3 ACTION scene. It's alright for a Netflix movie.
Blue Code of Silence (2020)
Prince of the city
Quite heavy topic, I know this level of corruption exist in nyc before watching the documentary and how corruption infuriates groups. But watching bob leuci fall into the pit still make me feel sorry for him. Listen to his father describe him as the person who cause his brother to become a drug addict seem really shake him up. All the confession and wire recording for the processors I don't know how much he did is the to do the right thing, or just save his own ass. "There is no heroes no villains, everybody doing what he believe is the right thing" under the pressure of blue code of silence, bob made his choice, and everybody he know paid the price.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
worth the wait
Way better film than 2017 one. The villain become more believable and story make much more sense. the color of this entire film way more consistency. More characters development and more important their backstory become more personal like cyborg. And all fight scenes got upgrade.
But still 4 hour is too long for this one, the could cut at least 30 minutes out of it. Each characters had more backstories development time, though way less than they deserve such as independent trilogy like marvel did.
Consider after this movie, AT&T gonna restart this franchise most famous characters, seems like most of this movie easter eggs and setup for the future darker DC universe is a dead end now. what a shame
The Old Guard (2020)
pretty bland, no character building
Since this is just a streaming movie, I'm not supposed to hold this at a regular movie standard. But Charlize Theron still makes me excited want to watch this movie.
But the cliched plotline and weak or non-character-building make this movie unbearable.
The Invisible Man (2020)
best horror/thriller movie I have seen this year
Really enjoy this movie, especially the tension build up and music. For instance the beginning of this movie, with only one word, you could cut the tension in the air with a knife. You can feel how much she been terrified by the domestic violence. But this also made how female character change later in the movie a bit less believable. I also think the final scene of killing husband a little bit cheap compare to the rest of movie.
1917 (2019)
Technical masterpiece and Great War Movie
After all these years superhero movies watch experience, I almost forget what true cinematography look like. I really enjoy this entre one shot movie, I love two main characters going through entire trenches scene, make everyone in the theather feel the terror of war. And the fire house scene probably the best scene I have seen in my life. Really appreacite everyone who make this masterpeice.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
characters motivation really confusing
Watch the new trailogy, not quite understand some character motivation in the new movie. For instance, why Kylo Ren want to rule the galaxy in the first place, why he want to rule with Rey. Why Kylo Ren turn back to Ben Solo after fight with Rey and see Han Solo force ghost. The entire trailogy didn't put much effort into character and charater relationship development.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
Really enjoy this film
We got a classical hero and villain build up and mixed some really shocking genocidal staff which really didn't go anywhere. Angelina Jolie, Maleficent design was amazing but on the contrary, the rest of her species CGI look really fall out of place. Love the bird man nest, you can see different season and how different are the and love when they fly to the sky and skid the terrain.
I have to admit I really like Angelina Jolie, this role is perfect for her, sort of anti-hero. The interaction between here and Michelle is also amazing, you can cut the tension with a knife in the first meetup scene, so good. But the villain herself, Michelle Pfeiffer, despite her acting was pretty good,I just can't get over her plastic filled upper lip and botox eyebrows, so goddam distracting.
the script is not very good but somehow I don't care even a little bit. Overall, I really enjoy this film, just like the first one.
Joker (2019)
Almost fall asleep
Most plots in the film you see it miles away, like joker's mom that joke is Wayne's son, joker kill talk show host and the relationship joker have with a black girl is nothing but an illusion. The whole story is really blatant and flat, whole tension inside the story was build only by loud music. Almost fall asleep during the film. If you have watched any of the movie trailers you have already see the whole film.
The Age of Spin: Dave Chappelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium (2017)
Best standup show I ever watch
Watch this on Netflix tonight, really really enjoy this. Love entire show, all these puns been put together very well.
Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)
Pretty amazing standup
First time watch Dave Chappelle standup, really enjoy most the punch lines in the one. Probabily will go back dig up some of his earily work and watch it.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
Less than what I expect
It just didn't work for me, don't really know why. It has the same action as previous ones if not more. The plot is a little bit bland, the main villain is not impressive at all, the characters are fine, but the car chasing perspective are cool not too short.
Men in Black: International (2019)
MIN international...... it is there
If you have watch any Sci-fi film, you see all the plots mile away. MIB suppose to be the best of them, but now just a forgettable one. Really disappointed.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
I wish I love this movie
The franhise review - Before, Marvel and DC start their superhoer francise, there is X-Men. I quite love all these characters wolvines, magneto, Jean, Cyclops, quick silver etc. I think I will rate this entire X-Men university 8 out of 10, second only to Marvel Avenger Universie.I don't think it's easy to create characters so a grow up could like, but they did it. And for that, Thank you so much. And farewell
The movie review:
I know the reshot long before seeing this movie, so I lower my expectation, but still find quite dispointting. I not only find the story really flat but also lack of character conflict development. I find myself could not suspend my disbelieve in the middle of storytelling, and start to question character motivation, why aliens play by Jessica Chastain obsorb the Phoenix force, when she knew she couldn't control it.
The only reason I give this movie 6 instead of 3 is becuase Sophie Turner play Dark Phoenix amazingly. The smile she give when she loses control, make my sine crawl, I love it. I love a good villain, this movie don't deserve her.
And here we are, the end of X-Men franchise produce by Fox. Hope Feige could do a better job tell Dark Phoenix story. And hire Sophine Turner play Jean Grey.
PS: I heard this move budget is 200 millions, couldnt believe this mediocre movie cost so much movie.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
Really boring
I find most details in this film not convincing. Especially how Pikachu bond with main character, there motivations, the main antagonist also not well established, don't really got his motive either. Detectiveve Pikachu is basically a mediocre film cover by Pikachu custom. Don't recommend anyone to watch.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
It's a closure
I have watch endgame 5 times, thanks to A-list. I really enjoy every detail of this movie. To be honest, entire marvel movies more like tv show to me, and this is the season finally, to be accurate far from home is the end of phase 3 but you know what I mean. Don't recommend newbie to watch btw, you will 100% got lost
Shazam! (2019)
Pretty genetic, nothing new
Recent years, the only type of film I keep watching is superhero film. So compare shazam to another superheroo, I will rank it between capital marvel and Thort 2. Most of the jokes I don't really find it funny, I don't find it organic either. The conflict such search for Belly's mom, The bond between his foster family, the final Superman suddenly appear, How shazam grow from a coward to a hero, all these details I don't find myself believe any of them. I don't know is this because of my superhero fatigue or what, but I don't find this movie watching experience great at all, even make me want leave during the film.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
GO WATHC IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT
I didn't see this coming, I thought I couldn't enjoy another superhero movie after seeing dozens of marvel super heroes and two or three series spider movies. But I got blown away by how amazing this spider-verse is, the visual effect, the comic-book like pop graphic, Stand Lee cameo, everything about this film just refreshing. The journey that Miles took to become a true super-hero, leap of faith, still give me goosebumps when I think about it. I think this is film need to been seen to be believe how great it is. Go watch it, you will definitely enjoy it.
