FBI: Trigger Effect (2021)
Story idea great
What is terrible is that Elise messed up, putting Maggie and Bell at the wrong address, giving the killer time to kidnap a victim. That woman dies because of Elise's mistake, yet she suffers no consequences. Maggie never even confronts her about how terrible the mistake was, only gently asks her to ask for help. There are quite a few instances in each episode that have me rolling my eyes, but this was by far the worst, most ludicrous scene. In the very next episode we see Elise and she's merely been moved to another department and has the audacity to complain about it. It is great that the show wants to show the PTSD is real, but this was a complete failure.
Tracker: St. Louis (2024)
Wanted to love this show, but...
...the dialogue is terrible. "Not if I see you first"? Who says that without being ironic? Well, that would be yet another pouty, supposedly sexy, flirty ex-partner of Coulter's. Justin Hartley is a good actor who is consistently paired with actors who give the worst line deliveries. This show could be good, it's an interesting premise, Hartley is easy to watch, and the cases make sense. The constant need to have Coulter paired with super flirty women is annoying and adds nothing to the story. They are written so comically bad, obviously by men. Maybe I've spent too much time watching British procedurals, which are just so much better.
Strangers (2018)
Good premise, way too long
I just finished the series, which was at least 4 episodes too long. Good premise, but the writing was lazy or possibly the director's fault. The baddie was easy to spot from the start, they might as well have twirled a mustache while smirking. I am not sure where to lay the blame for John Simm's breathy voice...writers, director, or the actor himself. It was really distracting as was the fact that this white Brit shows up to a former territory and starts shouting at everyone as if he is the lord of the manor. He's the foreigner, and her legit husband is left to play second fiddle. The undercurrent of racism is not helped by the intentional(?) tagline on the movie poster "He's long way from the truth". Seriously reads like it is mocking the way some Asian folks drop some words when speaking in English. Good cast, this should have been better.
McDonald & Dodds: A Wilderness of Mirrors (2020)
The writing is terrible.
All of them, except Dodds are one-note characters, especially Houseman. It's surprising he isn't twisting an evil mustache every time he is on screen. In both episodes McDonald places blame on Dodds for her failures, but in this episode she is down right abusive. Not sure I can stomach watching that poor guy get pummeled for a second season.
Silent Witness: Seven Times: Part 2 (2020)
Of course a man wrote this.
The abuse of women at the hands of men is a very important subject. That the writer chose to make an abused woman the criminal is beyond the pale. Fact is, men kill women so often, and abused women very rarely kill their abusers. There were a million ways to tell this story. By choosing to tell a story where a woman hunts abusers, you made men the victims. And that is gross.
Bird Box (2018)
It's about connecting.
At the beginning Mallory is very disconnected, she even says as much to her sister while creating her current piece of art. She and her sister make remarks about their parents being distant and not very loving. The movie even shows is how disconnected people are by seeing them on their phones, ifnoring the people right in front of them. It isn't until Mallory is faced with the literal end of the world and is forced into trusting other people that she starts making a real connection with Tom, even while maintaining emotional distance with the children that she refused to name. The ending is exactly as it should be, she reaches safety when she realizes just how much she loves the children. If you absolutely have to have a boogeyman to blame at the end, then I understand the bad reviews.
The Florida Project (2017)
Excellent
Heartbreaking and beautifully acted. The everyday life of the poor who live within walking distance of "The Happiest Place on Earth".
Cars (2006)
Wish I never checked this from the library
Terrible movie. Lightning is a detestable character, within 20 minutes I was ready to turn it off and put it in the trash to save others from this movie.
I knew going in that it was a movie with very few female characters, but decided to see what the fuss is about and see if there was anything redeemable about it for girls. Nope. From Lightning sexually harassing the lawyer to the groupies I am just astonished that any adult would find this movie acceptable.
Also? Every other character is such a stereo-type that I had a very hard time believing this movie got made.
Contraband (2012)
Unbelievably bad
This should be shown in film schools everywhere on how to not make a film. Terrible acting from everyone, with the exception of the child actors. The characters are so cliché'd and cardboard. Ribisi and JK Simmons....beyond awful. The over-acting was so bad, as if those two were purposefully trying to never get hired to act again. And they are all supposed to be from New Orleans? I was so confused at the beginning because they seemed to be in NO, but not one character sounded at all like they have ever left Boston or New York. Oh, and the "surprise" traitor. I spotted the rat within 5 minutes of the movie starting. The camera work was jarring and off-putting. The plot and script seemed to have been written by a teenaged boy, and not a particularly good one.
Only plus I can give this movie is it was "free" on cable.
The Legend of Sasquatch (2006)
Cute story
Not a huge fan of the animation, but the story is sweet. Not much conflict, and I like that the family is helping the Sasquatch. Only one real complaint: The dead mother. Why do the makers of kid's films find that so appealing?
This movie reminds me a whole lot of My Neighbor Totoro. The animation in that movie is so much better, as are the actors. Both sweet movies about respecting nature and helping out.
I like movies with strong female characters for my 2.5 year old to watch, and it's so hard to find them. I am glad my husband stumbled across this movie on Fios.
