The Cold Light of Day (2012)
This wasn't that bad...
It was actually pretty confusing experience - I watched this movie and I kind of could not understand, whether it was good or bad. At first glance it seems like The Cold Light of Day does have all the necessary elements to be a worthy representative of its genre (spy/action flick) - there is a very attractive, flexible lead actor, captivating storyline, exotic setting (Spain) and fascinating action scenes, not to consider Bruce Willis. Yet something is missing...
Probably the biggest problem was Henry Cavil's performance and his character. I got it - he's got an amazing career in fashion business and he is VERY good looking, but it doesn't make him an outstanding, even good actor. But this guy lacks charisma and he is not as convincing as Matt Damon was in similar flick - Bourne Identity. Cavill's terrorized sweaty face, his movements and speech will only make you grin distrustfully.
And his character Will wouldn't have that much trouble if Spanish people could speak at least little bit of English (well, apparently none of them can) - every time Will is in trouble the local population only makes it worse for him - they shout something unintelligible, wave their hands and cackle - I have never been to Spain, but I am sure Spanish people are not like that.
Bruce Willis' performance of a sad, disappointed in his son father, was pretty convincing, pity there wasn't much of him in this movie. World's greater conspirator Mrs. Weaver was performing just as usual - I bet she didn't even change her tough CIA lady suit as she walked off Abduction, Paul, and Cabin in the Woods settings and walked in this one. Overall production was good for TV movie, but not for a wide release. But it wasn't that bad after all...
Sur le rythme (2011)
Awful, just awful...
This movie was really really bad. It has a stretched, incredibly boring plot and apart from its being on a foreign language, it follows all the clichés of two successful dance flicks namely - Step Up and Street Dance. Starting with main hero's black undershirt (just like Channing Tatum's one in Step Up) and finishing with dance moves - it is all an imitation of those two movies. Never mind that, I sat through the whole movie expecting a great dancing/dance-off/face-off or whatever scene in the end between good guys and bad ones, however there wasn't even one - there is just some mild sluggish dancing, no chemistry whatsoever. Supporting roles were bad as well. I am utterly disappointed. 2 outa 10
The Tall Man (2012)
Surprisingly good and unpredictable.
This movie is not of the best quality, probably due to its mediocre production budget, yet it successfully stands out from the other movies of its genre. Although at parts THE TALL MAN might feel like JEEPERS CREEPERS or even Texas CHAINSAW MASSACRE (Yep, Jessica Biel is terrorized again and she will have to attend some dreary and shabby places for one more time) those viewers who expect tons of blood and slaughter will be disappointed. TALL MAN is not a slasher, it is a gloomy and dynamic thriller/drama with a nice, strong plot which, unlike in the movies mentioned before, is logically grounded.
The performance, delivered by both leads and figurants is fine, Jessica Biel is at her best and one can tell that thriller genre is her territory. Jodelle Ferland, a young Canadian talent who gave me creeps in SILENT HILL, unfortunately underperformed a bit in this movie (her acting has become a bit of cliché, and just as in TIDELAND and SILENT HILL, she remains mysterious and silent throughout the whole movie). The atmosphere is cold and depressing, decorated with wide shots of beautiful Canadian nature, snow-covered mountains and woods in particular.
As I and other users have mentioned already - THE TALL MAN is not a horror/slasher movie, yet it has some really jumpy and tense moments, that not even the best horror movies can boast of. Generally - I am surprised and would recommend you to watch it - you will not waste your time!
