La sociedad de la nieve (2023)
An incredibly power story and gut wrenching at the same time
An incredibly moving at the same time gut wrenching story about our survival instinct depicted in a remarkably powerful manner.
In 1999 my school teacher had told me this story. This story has stayed with me since then and once I watched this movie I realised that she was fairly accurate in her narration
It is a movie which is a testament of human spirit is all that I want to say about the plot even though it would be a mistake to call such a story as a plot. All the actors have done a top notch job. The camera work and direction is excellent. You really get involved in their effort to survive and so badly want them to survive. This movie connects at a human level irrespective of your culture. This movie provokes your moral compass too. To what extent you will go to survive,?does survival mean anything.?Who truly survived.? There are so many questions that you feel will forever remain unanswered. At the end though your are relieved.
You can't miss this movie even if you are not an adventure buff. It is worth every breath.
Rooney (2022)
A perspective which you can't see on the field
The english football team of 2004-2006 was the golden generation and ronney was the golden boy of that generation. I have been following rooney since his star performance in EURO 2004, How he impressed ferguson and moved to united and made history. But this documentary throws lights on many other aspects of his life. His nature, his raw talent, his character and his opinion on all that he has done on and off the field including acceptance and justification. Perhaps nothing in rooney's life is not known but nevertheless it is a good watch. Rooney was a damn agressive, strong, skilled and definitely a great team player. It felt that rooney knew he was a great player even before starting his club football career. I also liked the interviews of gary neville. The documentary was very nostalgic too. I still remeber the 2006 quarter final red card against portugal.
This documentary is not just about rooney but i think this is about any star sports person. Their perspectives, their challenges and all they need to endure being a star including their rise, their ups and downs and their final innings of hanging their boots and moving on to new things in life.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
I bet this movie will stay with you for a long long time
Even though this movie was suggested to me by my friend in 2009, I ended up watching it in 2019. Oh boy, what was I waiting for. This story revolves around the 8 year kid called Bruno who is instinctively an explorer and he depicts it (in nazi Germany). A set of events lead the family of this boy to leave their city Berlin and move to a far away country side of Germany . This journey gives you clues that the place is in some sense haunting (won't reveal any more ). Bruno continues with his pursuit of adventure over there through which he finds a 8 year old Friend . The climax is for you to see . This movie is not as much about the Holocaust but about human emotions, about the innocence of children ,why the grace and good nature of women is taking care of this world , the monster in every men and how life can be a Frankenstein . This movie will stay with you for a long time , will anguish you , will hearten you and will make u ponder .Must watch . Go with 4.5/5 . PS: I would suggest that you watch Schindler's list and pianist before watching this . Will help you appreciate this movie better
Soni (2018)
Thought provoking , sympathizing and brilliantly directed
Hitting , thought provoking and realistic .
Soni primarily revolves around the fearless , honest and yet in some sense - gentle lives of a police officer named soni and her boss kalpana who is very caring about her subordinates .
The movie has successfully attempted to show the lives of police officers in a city like Delhi especially the women police officers . The vulgar language , Eve teasing and the harassment that they need to listen , the unrealistic protocols that they need to follow and the pressure and injustice that the suffer from. Despite being highly sincere and motivated , the officers struggle in their system . Soni, on top of her professional struggles , also undergoes struggles in her personal life which takes a toll on everything that she does.
Their lives takes them through existential crisis too.
The direction , cinematography and acting of the protagonists is extremely brilliant . A few scenes were a unnecessary drag but overall quite good
Implicitly , soni also in a suttle way , talks about the hardships in the life of a women , disrespect and cliched behavior that the men show to women , and the safety of women in capital Delhi
Narcos: México (2018)
Starts slowly picks up pace quickly and ends brilliantly
Unlike it's earlier three seasons which push up the rhythm quite quickly , narcos mexico spends some time to lay the foundations of the plot in the first two episodes and can feel slow . But once it picks up pace , it is just brilliant . The acting and the lolcales are too good . There are nerve biting moments , there are moments that confuse you and moments that make you a realistic . Narcos Mexico is also is a story about betrayal , saving oneself even at the cost of your closest friends who always remained loyal to you . IT is about why if you don't grow your business , you will die . About understanding that when people are put to most tempting tests , they give in . Watch narcos to understand and experience the Mexico cartels and the extent of corruption .
Roma (2018)
The most detailed and realistic portrayal of life I have seen
Roma is primarily a story of a maid Cleo and her influence on the people with whom her paths meet primarily in her profession as a maid to a wealthy family. Roma is just not about Cleo but also about the very delicate and minute aspects about our lives which the director has portrayed brilliantly through his cinematography and genius camera work . The shots are slow , the frames are very detailed and unparalleledly realistic . In some sense Roma also intends to show the plight of the women in Mexico of 1969-70 , which is even relavent today but that's not the objective of Roma . Roma is about showing an extremely normal setting in an extremely detailed and flawless way. If you are a person interested in thrill ,action , pace and suspense , then Roma will disappoint you. Else , go for it .
Lucia (2013)
An intelligent thriller that doesn't end at the theatre
Directed by pavan kumar and with @Sathish Neenasam and @Sruthi Hariharan as Nikki and Shwetha in the lead roles this will be a movie that you waited to watch since long(if u like thought provoking thrillers'). From the very beginning this movie created curiosity : crowd funding, the title, posters, in experienced actors and the surprise surrounding the whole project. Lucia doesn't disappoint its hype and perhaps gives u much more than what u expected.
This movie being a thriller i don't intend to reveal the plot but would like to throw some light on the concept and why this is a important movie. Lucia does what rarely any Indian movie has ever done as a subject meaning it crosses all the regional and national limits in terms of catering audiences and does a movie for the sake of doing a movie( u can compare it with a @hitchcock or a nolan or fincher) and it is still unique in terms of the script.
Some where in between this movie might make you feel that all life is an illusion and u might accept the fact that the grass is always greener on the other side in real life. Even in terms of the plot you have loads to take back with you in terms of thought.
A well begun plot, two stories running parallel, events miked up in a logical sequence from the final scene to mid .. beginning and end..., great screen play , direction, acting and camera work all make this a compelling watch.
Thats it in terms of the intro.. on the flip side , except one song: thinbedakammi, the music doesn't create much impact nor it corresponds to some seqeuences. couple of sequences could have been unleashed better. In terms of the climax buildup, i felt that even though it had a brilliant climax the intermittent sequences din't excite you enough as to what is actually going on nor you get many hints(but still the end pays for the patience).
this is a must watch flick and thanks to pavan for putting not only sandalwood but the entire Indian cinema on the intelligent movie maker's map. After a long time i have seen our director's exhibiting such intelligence.
PS:this movie has subtitles so language is not a concern.
The Good Road (2013)
How ordinary situations can be portrayed extraordinarily
The good road is a story about three situations happening to three groups of people with a protagonist in each of these three groups. The story happens in the beautiful Rann of Kutch area in Gujarat.
A family(Father David, Mother Kiran and their 6 year old son Aditya) are on their journey(tour) to a place called Attahasa. Simultaneously, a truck driver Pappu with his assistant(co-worker) are on their journey in which they need to destroy their truck by taking it down the hill and pretend to be dead in return for a lump-sum amount as directed by an agent, one Mr. Jadeja who wants to claim insurance benefits. Also there is this story of a little girl Poonam who is on her way to Attahasa, to unite with her grandma, and is dropped by a truck some where on the same highway. Poonam's journey begins from Bombay.
At a Dhaba, where David pulls over to pick a pack of cigarettes and when Kiran is fast a sleep in the car, their kid Aditya sneaks out and plays with a puppy in the dhaba. David doesn't notice his son having sneaked out and moves from that dhaba only to realize that their son is missing when they stop to refill gas some 200kms ahead.
Pappu the truck driver also stops over the dhaba and Agent Jadeja asks him to take this kid Aditya along with him in the truck and drop him in a village some where ahead. At the same time poonam who is dropped along the highway is seen wandering around for help and food and lands up in a brothel(she is not aware of it).
Aditya goes along in the truck carefree with his puppy which is disliked by the co-worker even though pappu the driver makes no qualms about it. Gradually due to various situations that occur Pappu and his co-worker develop a bond and affection towards Aditya and he kind of becomes a part of their family. Pappu is actually not ready to drop Aditya any where because he doesn't want he kid to be abandoned nor to be left with strangers.
On the other end David and Kiran helplessly keep searching for Aditya. The little girl Poonam who lands at the brothel is fed by the brothel owner for a day but he asks her to go away from there because she is too small but the girl has no where to go. Poonam also develops a bond with a girl called Pinki in the brothel. Shortly Poonam runs away from the Brothel when she understands the reality and reaches the highway. A truck driver obliges to drop her to Attahasa. Somewhere ahead this truck and Pappu's truck encounter each other and Pappu loses control of the truck and takes it down a valley. Luckily none is hurt but the truck is destroyed. Pappu tells Aditya that the police will take care of him shortly and tells aditya not to tell about them to anyone or else they will be in trouble. Aditya is shortly united with his parents and Pappu tells his co-worker that there are many trucks and highways in India and life will go on and they too move on.... The credits roll....
The good road is a simple story shown naturally and still it is a brilliant watch. The cinematography, the rustic background score, Screen play and direction have been perfect.Camera work and editing could have been made better.
The movie has some emotional moments between Aditya and the truck driver especially when they sing a song together. Aditya also takes dinner with them and says the food is better than home food. That scene is quite emotional.
The story tells us not only about human emotions but also about human difficulties.
Love, responsibility, Carelessness, greed, trafficking, humanity, difficulties of truck drivers, innocence of children, care for animals, corruption all these suttle elements of life are depicted brilliantly.
On a standalone basis i think this is a better nomination for the Oscars. Even the Iranian movie A saperation had a simple plot and yet won the Oscars. I wont be surprised if this movie makes to the final 5 nominations.
