New Girl (2011)
what the..??
what is going on in the heads of the people writing such bad reviews of this lovely little show?
I have to say as many of the others, this show is like a breath of fresh air, there are some great comedies out there these days like Modern family and HIMYM, but this one is a bit different.. it's sweet and endearing, a bit like Friends. And I'm laughing my ass of over every episode. Zooey does a great job here like usually, and I like the rest of the cast as well. The first couple of episodes were a little slow to start but the show has really found it's footing now. I really recommend it!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011)
Almost perfect.. an 8 but Alan Rickman gives it the ninth star..
The last episode of the Harry Potter movies is by far the best of the eight. While it does not follow the book like one would have liked, that is understandable as different things work for different mediums. The best by far was the WONDERFUL WONDERFUL acting of Alan Rickman as Snape, he is such an underrated actor. I hope that the academy will acknowledge his amazing attribution to this work of art, there is no question that an Oscar nomination is worthy.
The disappointment of the movie in my opinion was the lack of the final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort. Why change a good thing? the gorgeous prose that Rowling wrote would have played beautifully on screen, the beauty of the battle of words instead of the battle of weapons was a key point in the epitome of the whole series. But than again, you can never have everything you ask for ;) all in all, a major success!
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
good movie, disappointing vocals
I quite enjoyed seeing the movie last night, being a devoted Sweeney, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and last but not least Tim Burton fan.
The filming, set, costumes and acting were all brilliant and it was a pleasurable experience for me. EXCEPT for one thing. I'm sorry, but the two main actors were NOT equipped to sing their roles. They simply do not have the voices for it. So all my favorite songs went completely flat and sounded positively high school musical. WAY to Disney for me! These roles need meat on the bones, darkness of sound, a range of colours in the voice, resonance! (and then you could easily hear all the auto tuning going on.. dreadful)
Why on earth didn't they get proper singers to sing for the two main characters? Do everyone HAVE to sing themselves in films just because it was done in Walk the line (a lot better I must say)? Others were better, I was not overly fond of Jane Wisener's vibrato (dreadful, but easily fixed by a proper voice teacher) but I thought Ed Sanders Toby was wonderful, Sacha murdered the role of Pirelli (no pun intended), Timothy Spall did well and should have been allowed to sing more of his role (cut a lot), and Alan Rickman was as gorgeous as ever. He can sing! Jamie Campbell Bower was also a lovely, lovely Anthony.
Conclusion: one star off for each of JD and HBC vocal performances. The rest a full house!
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
extremely pretentious
There is absolutely nothing good to be said about this movie. It is pretentious, horribly slow and uninteresting. It seems like Wes Anderson is trying his best to make an arty epic with a twist of humor but does not manage to meet any of these goals. It is not arty but boring, not an epic but a movie that is way too long and the twist is not humorous but painful. It really has to be one of the worst films I've ever seen, a complete waste of talent, money and time, and the only place I have "met" anyone that does not agree with me is here at IMDb.com. EVERYONE I have spoken to in real live share that opinion with me. If you have not seen it, do yourself a favor and steer well clear of this one.
