The Wolverine (2013)
Wolverine Is At An All Time Low
Okay, before I get into it, allow me to highlight some glitches in the movie. First, Wolverine, when in the Japanese prison camp (of which I'm pretty sure there were none in Nagasaki) says something to the effect of 'that's a B-52 bomber. no one's gonna outrun that.' Did he know about the project code named 'Big Boy?' Did he know that it was the atomic bomb? And if so, how the heck would he know that? Also, he slept with his friend's granddaughter. Isn't that against some unwritten code of honor? Also, almost the only factor in the entire movie that moved anybody even a little bit was his relationship with his Japanese friend, and how he sustained an atomic blast to protect him. Then, in the end, we came to find out that he was only looking to take advantage of Wolverine and reclaim his youth. Nicely done. Bonus: there were some funny parts, like in the porno hotel and with the 'doctor.. sort of. veterinarian.. student' and I'll admit, the beginning part with the bear was pretty sad and Wolverine's rage was pretty justified. And the train fight scene was awesome! However, this movie was just like that train, except way too slow paced at times, and it didn't know where it was going. Like, I'm pretty positive the director pulled the ending right out of his butt. Pretty bad. 5/10
Halo 4 (2012)
Great Job to The Underdog Company!
If you have been a fan of the Legendary trilogy of Halo through its duration, you would have, like I, been coming into this whole new introduction expecting (and maybe hoping)for it to crash and burn.
However, 343 has done an excellent job. What I really like is their company name, as it is a reference to 343 Guilty Spark, a large contributor to the Halo universe. They have not destroyed the name of Halo; they have raised it to a whole new level
The campaign is extremely fun, and not too long (8 missions). The story line between Master Chief and Cortana was chalked up to be more than it came out to be, but I found it to be more profound than other Halo story-lines, even if it didn't move me to tears. I blame that on the (while good) soundtrack that just wasn't quite Martin O'Donnell level.
The online play from what I've seen is great: they took some factors from Halo: Reach that worked and they bettered them. (The game style that I particularly enjoy is Regicide).
A good game-- it was everything we needed it to be and more than we expected it to be.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Just a Very Bad Movie
People can say all they want that this movie can't be compared to the original Spider-Mans, but it can and it sure as heck will.
The thing that makes Spider Man... well, Spider Man is his character: his noticeable ability to triumph. Sure he gets beaten down, but he ultimately triumphs.
However, half way through the movie I couldn't tell who the good guy was supposed to be, and the same was true for the rest of the movie. Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Spider Man featured an incredibly awkward kid turning into a real nuisance, and all of a sudden he was completely confident... WHAT? He got away with things that I wouldn't have got away with, and I'm more charming. He shot chicks in the butt, he talked police officers down, and he tried to rationalize that he was doing the right thing, when he was by no means doing it.
As for acting performances, I found the movie to be bad ranging to sub- par. Andrew Garfield didn't have opportunities to really give somebody a glimpse of his character and his insecurities, and he sure didn't find ways. Emma Stone's character portrayed her as a patsy little girl who would fall for stupid and terrible lines like. "Don't make promises you can't keep." "But those are the best kind."
Overall, my 3/10 is pretty generous, as the movie left zero inclination for high expectations for the next movie. As I have suggested, Tobey Maguire should be begged to comeback.. that is, if anyone has the balls to make any more Spider Man movies after the last two flops.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Sub-par to Decent
Heading in, I was very stoked for an epic war movie. Heading out, I was disappointed.
The movie had no real point: you had one man and his endeavors in his bomb squad. He made his fair share of mistakes, but in the end, there was no redemption, or much less, point to his existence. While the war scenes were very intriguing, one man's apathy made the movie look bad.
Any good elements of this movie were overshadowed by high expectancy and bad execution. In the ending moments you knew that you had just wasted 2 hours of your life that you would never get back. The movie took turns for the bad, and it dug itself into ruts that it never got out of.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Very Unexpectedly Well Done Piece of Work
Wow, where to start?
I guess if you're reading this review, all I'd say is that you should get off your butt and go watch this movie.
My only gripe is one that is not directed at the movie. If any of you read the IGN review, you'll find that it was very inaccurate. They said that the characters were not developed well, whereas they were. Peter Jackson did an excellent job of creating character where there wasn't any to be had in the book. And the dwarfs were far from colorless.
Overall, it was a movie that kept me on the edge of my seat, and yet subtly brought back the Howard Shore Shire theme (which if that doesn't tug at your heart-strings, what will). What I liked was that not all of the dwarfs had distinct character. You'll find that the same is true in reality, with some people contributing to society, and others, well not. Very good movie from start to finish, and when experts paint this movie to be less that expected, don't pay any heed. This is a movie that gives the very Lord of the Rings trilogy a run for its money.
