The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
One of the few sequels that is considered better than the prequel...but they are both awesome.
The lord of the rings: Two Towers(2002) continues the story epic story following three individual tales of the main characters. First is Frodo and Sam meet with Gollum to find a way into Mordor, Pippin and Merry who meet with Treebeard to destroy Saurman and finally Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf have to save Rohan from Isengard. What can I really say: it's awesome and better than its predecessor, but you really can't say either is better because the lotrs as a whole is what makes this film franchise popular and loved by millions. The difference between the first and second is that the second increases the scale of the film to a whole new level (by only increasing the budget to one million more?) this is the reason why Jackson is just a genius as a whole. Jackson knows the core material of the book and mixing his own ideas into this project gives it the extra touch of creativity thrown in along with cool visuals, good character development and touching emotional storyline. You do in fact notice major character development with this movie and it is what I think Jackson had in mind when creating the second. First for build up, second for character development and third for massive impact and climax. that's what I think but may not be true but its how I see these movies. The acting is great as usual with more characters included such as the vile grima wormtounge, faramir captain of gondor and the noble and strong eywon(maiden of rohan) plus they are allowed more action to enhance more physical and mental personality expressed which in turn shows that legolas is swift whilst Gandalf is defiant. The music by Howard shore is always the thing that lets you know you have entered into middle earth with its iconic, powerful and medieval themed that always makes you just want to stand up and say "fuck yeah that's awesome". One thing that was improved from the last movie was saruman's character who conjures up a massive army of ura Kai to destroy rohan as his voice echoes with defiance and power to emphasise his evil and dominance as the main antagonist of the second movie. The Two Towers is a great follow to the fellowship of the ring and is filled with so much a lord of the rings fan could want; massive battles, spectacular landscapes and cool characters to cheer and fear. 5/5
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Different from the first two...but in a good way.
People who have seen the third harry potter film will be surprised by the sudden change of tone and direction taken to create a dark and mysterious film unlike a happy family related movie. The first time i seen it i really didn't like it because of that but as the other harry potter films were released, they all sucked. So in retrospect this makes the third much better. I am not saying i like it because the others sucked but the more you watch it and compare, you will like it. As a 10 year old kid, i was hyped with harry potter, having read all the books, owning a lot of merchandise and knowing all bout the classic books. I was mad into it. I needed something to get into after the end of the lord of the rings (with one more star wars and more hp, things started looking great for me as a kid).
Everybody knows the movie, its simple but adding in the different conflicts between characters, increases drama and tension in the movie, hence the different direction for harry potter. The music is still by john Williams who i really like the medieval themed music to create a spooky atmopshere. The characters all have changed as well but the big change has to be dumbledore played by Micheal gambon. The dumbledore in the first two films was played by the late Richard Harris who did a magnificent job in playing the beloved dumbledore. I know gambon In;t as good but he is still great and i hate it when people give him a lot of slick for him. He does give a great performance and I'm sure Richard is proud of him.
The book is not as different from the movies, especially as the later films take not much from the books. The third book is the second best to read and the film is the 3rd best. A great movie that should be marked still as a classic and the first film i was introduced to the famous Gary oldman. What a performance as Sirius black! 9/10. Brilliant film.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
My all time favourite film. Beautiful.
What can i say, its shaw shank. I don't refer the film as the shaw shank redemption i call it shaw shank as everyone knows what I'm on about when i say its my favourite (and i only seen it in April 2012). The story is well known as Andy dufrense is wrongly accused of a double murder and sentenced to shaw shank prison where he meets red (played by the awesome Morgan freeman). Over time in the movie he adapts to life in prison and escapes and becomes a free man. How did a movie this so simple become beloved by so many. How? I don't know how and i don't care but this film is basically a beginner for any filmmaker and already became a success years later. Although it did not great at the box office yet critics praised it well, years later people discovered it on VHS. I wished i seen this film earlier as a teenager as it would have struck to me even more through a time i felt depressed and sad. A discovered this movie in the local library and rented it as i heard of the film being very good and after seeing it, it is more than just good. I may be over-exaggerating this brilliance of the film but it unlike many other films (except the lion king of the return of the king hit me right in the soft spot). I didn't cry at the end, i smiled at the end. What a film.
The good of the film, the acting from freeman. Although he lost to hanks in Forrest gump for best actor, i don;t care as hanks did as much as a good job as freeman did (if better). Tim Robbins was also amazing and likable with the supporting cast doing perfection to the highest level. The score is beautiful, the mies en scene, the scripting writing is gold and genius making this a classic. This film is not complex and it is something that makes it just so darn good. The pacing is perfect and the narration from freeman is timeless. The iconic shots of Andy raising is hands in the air after escape is timeless as and should be attempted when finishing school (as i have did).
A film highly recommend by me and others as well, touched me to the point of joy and laughter and will bloom your day as it always will live as cinemas most beloved classic ever. 5/5
Alien Hunter (2003)
An awful movie alien hunter truly
By god does this movie suck really bad. My first review i shall use as a starter to reviewing this awful mess of was is seen to others as cinematic enjoyment. This movie has a basic plot made complicated. I had no idea of what the hell was going on at times. The story is (i think?) of some guy who is obviously the guy who survives at all times in this cheesy sci-fi some crytography who is somehow needed for coding some alien message that crashed landed with a ship in the south pole (or north, it does't even matter where). People their are dead as alien kills, is killed and people escape. Is this not cinematic genius such as alien in which had me excited to see an alien kill people, but alien hunter the thing only appears for like ten minutes and dies easily. The title is misleading as well (in a way) as the alien hardly hunts and i thought this would have been a spin off of the predator movie. The acting is bad and effects are lame, script writing is bad and silly. This film bored me completely and is a horrific mess made. Hardly worth anyones time. I would not recommend this film, but if you really want to see a film that is worse than batman and robin or home alone 4. Check it out. Horrible film. 0/5
