SuperBob (2015)
Marmite
One of those films, you'll either love it or hate it. Personally for me, the funniest thing was the trivia on this webpage.
High Spirits (1988)
Childhood favourite
Typical of its time. 80's family fun and one of my childhood favourites. Made back in the day before people felt an insatiable desire to rip films apart.
Dated now and probably not appealing to a modern audience but great nostalgic trip for anyone old enough to remember it.
Togo (2019)
Loved it
Special effects were a bit OTT, certainly didn't expect a historically accurate documentary as some reviewers clearly wanted, as for the animal rights activists, pretty sure this wasn't considered a 'hobby' back in the 20's.
As a film, thoroughly enjoyed it, serious story line with a touch of humour.
What Death Leaves Behind (2018)
Boring
Very dubious about the people leaving high ratings. Like watching paint dry. The non linear timeline instead of being used to good effect simply ruins the flow of the film. A review elsewhere sums it up perfectly:
"A pallid supernatural thriller more fascinated with being "non-linear" in narrative terms than you will be."
Had it been more than an hour and a half long, I would have given up. I persevered to the end and begrudge every wasted minute.
Ad Astra (2019)
Unimpressed
I hoped for more given the cast. Watchable but certainly nothing special.
Another Life (2019)
Please make it stop
I'm not generally a critic, I have low standards but this failed to meet them. I managed 23 minutes and just couldn't do it any more.
No story build up or character introduction it's just meh.
A ship that can travel 'FTL' but needs a gravity assist to avoid a dark matter cloud? Even my high school science struggles to overlook this.
Worst of all, a holographic video call light years from home with no lag? Scientists haven't even mastered reliable WiFi yet, it's not set that far into the future. This takes it from sci-fi to fantasy.
Oh, and the acting is kid of bad too.
The Great Wall (2016)
Meh
Not great and not terrible.
Worth a watch on subscription but wouldn't want to pay extra for it.
Think the costume designers were LotR fans.
Oh, Hello on Broadway (2017)
Oddball
Found it mildly humorous but think it's too regional specific.
I'd imagine if your American, or more specifically from New York, it's probably absolutely hilarious but unfortunately humour that really doesn't cross the pond.
A disjointed and bizarre show that I only watched on Netflix because it mentioned Michael J Fox and for that, I only needed to watch the 7min trailer rather than the whole show.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
True Thriller
Haven't watched the whole series yet but waited till at least episode 7 before writin* a review.
This is a true, creepy thriller that had be hooked before the opening credits rolled.
Haven't read the book, and would like to hope it does it justice, but maybe the series was a tad dragged out.
Absolutely loved it and think it certainly raises the bar for Netflix originals.
Industrial Revelations (2002)
Fantastic
Really interesting and well presented. If this had been on when I did my GCSE history, I would have done a lot better.
John Bishop: Supersonic Live (2015)
Awesome
The kind of humour you don't fully appreciate unless your over 40, married and have older kids. In parts I literally couldn't breathe for laughing.
Not a lot you can say, it's John Bishop, it's stand up and it's hilarious.
Lost in Space (2018)
It's a TV show ffs
I'm glad I didn't go off the reviews (there were less than 20 when I first checked)
The show tries to explain the character background in a similar way to Lost and except for being in space, is quite similar. Plot holes, continuity errors, lame acting in parts etc.
At the minute I find the robot to be the most intriguing character (only half way through) and still confused about the details of the original problem (obviously some kind of attack) this show seems to be one dilemma after another.
So many reviews that are really irate at this show. Why would anyone expect a reboot to be exactly the same as the original it would make no sense.
'PC gone mad'? Wouldn't quite go that far and in response to other reviews, the mixed race family is explained in episode 5.
This is after all a TV show. It won't have the same kind of budget as Marvel or Lucas films but some of the reviewers seem to have unrealistic expectations.
Watch it for what it is, a science fiction (emphasis on fiction) TV show for entertainment purposes when you have nothing better to do.
Unlike others, I'm not nostalgic enough to pretend the 1960's original has been let down, that wasn't particularly great either.
Hilarity for Charity (2018)
Waste of time
I felt compelled to write a review because this show was just so bad.
Glad it was for charity, would hate to think these guys actually earned money for this rubbish.
By rights, the line up should have made for a fantastic show but it certainly didn't work out that way.
Maybe they were saving their actual funny material for another time or the humour simply didn't make it across the pond.
Seth wanted to show comedy from a variety of genres (childish, immature, bland) which meant the show simply failed in multiple ways.
Ended up fast forwarding it up to john mulaney part and even that was a letdown so ended up turning it off.
In the end, I turned it back on out of curiosity to see if it got any better but sadly I simply wasted another 30minutes of my life.
Ticked the box saying may contain spoiler as 'Waste of time' might give it away.
Annihilation (2018)
WTF?
Started off odd, became weird and ended up bizarre.
Kept watching hoping it would make sense but I was disappointed.
No doubt others will describe this as 'artistic' or 'original' blah, blah; my chosen adjective would be pointless.
That said, it is subjective but I would say it's a marmite film, you will either love it or hate it.
Ghostbusters (2016)
I liked it
As a stand alone film it's OK if you avoid comparing it to the original classic.
I can't believe people are incensed enough to write such long winded rants. Is it a great movie? no! Is it likely to win an Oscar? Certainly not.
I enjoyed it and I especially liked the cameos from the original cast but in fairness, if I had paid good money to watch it I too would have been annoyed.
Unfortunately it does belong in the reject bin with all the other reboots and poor sequels such as Independence Day and point break but it certainly watchable.
