Airplane! (1980)

A timeless masterpiece
29 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is perhaps the funniest movie I ever saw. There are just too many lines from this movie that you never forget. I was at the local YMCA today and I think it must have been "naked man day" in the men's locker room. I walked in to change clothes and everywhere I turned there was a naked man. I burst into laughter because the first thing that came to my mind was Peter Graves saying to Joey, "You ever seen a grown man naked?" I still tell people, "and don't call me Shirley" and every time I hear someone say, "the blank's gonna hit the fan" I think of that scene and laugh. This movie is unforgettable.

I think it's interesting that two of the all time biggest movie surprises in history were from two films made in the same year. 1980 saw "The Empire Strikes Back" and it's totally shocking, surprising Darth Vader line of "No. I am your father." I rank that as the biggest movie surprise of all time. And then of course there was June Cleaver/Barbara Billingsley walking up and saying, "Oh stewardess, I speak jive." I don't care who you are, if you were in a movie theater back in 1980 when this movie first came out and you hadn't heard about this scene yet then you fell out of your chair laughing because back then there was no one more unlikely on the planet Earth to walk up and speak jive than June Cleaver. We had no VCR's or DVD's. You went to the show or you watched TV. All of us spending money at the movie theaters were kids growing up in the 60's and 70's watching "Leave It To Beaver". That was one of the most shocking, surprising brilliant pieces of comedy ever done in movie history.

I just love this movie. It's one of those where every time you watch it you catch something else. When you're having a bad day put this movie on and laugh until you cry. I would have loved to have been at the table with the writers of this movie when they were making all of this up. I don't know if they sat around drinking coffee, beers, whiskey or whatever but they sure must have had fun writing this. Comedies are always overlooked for greatness and awards and I really don't understand why. It is not easy to write funny lines, stories or jokes. Twenty nine years later I salute them for making a timeless masterpiece. This movie definitely deserves to be in the top 250.

Fun for everyone!
10 February 2006
The movie was just fun. I'm a huge fan of slapstick and goofy humor. Well this is a movie just full of it. I took my nine year old daughter with me, who like a lot of the children I know really like Steve Martin. Well we both laughed a lot and sometimes out loud, especially me. It was opening night and the theater was almost full. There were lots of people laughing during this movie. It was a crowd of all ages and at the end there was applause. I'm not gonna give some long drawn out analysis of the movie and compare it to the original series or any other movies for that matter. I will just say that I was very skeptical about a new Pink Panther movie and just assumed this would be a stupid bomb. Well I must say it was stupid funny and like a bomb it was explosively funny. I'm glad I saw a clip on the Letterman show that sparked my interest. Steve Martin and Kevin Kline were downright funny.

As a father it's always fun to take your kids to a movie where you can both laugh out loud and enjoy without having to worry about foul language, nudity or violence. If you want to go see a serious movie full of the hardships of life then go see one of the Oscar nominated pictures. If you just want to go and have some simple fun with one of your kids, your spouse or a friend, then allow yourself the time to see why Steve Martin is still one of America's best funny men.

It was a fun movie!
22 January 2006
I thought this was a fun movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the slapstick and the acting. I was really impressed with Tea Leoni. She wasn't afraid to take chances and look goofy in parts. Alec Baldwin as always was a hoot. He is one of my favorite character actors. I believe his Saturday Night Live shows that he has hosted are among the funniest they've ever done. From beginning to end his skits are always funny. Whether he does comedy or drama, like his great performance in "The Cooler", he is just plain fun to watch. Jim Carrey is his old self and seems to have fun with his role. There was a scene where it seemed like a highlight reel of his special goofy comedic talents just like the interview scene in "Mrs. Doubtfire" when Robin Williams performed one impression after the other. I enjoyed it. This movie wasn't meant to be taken seriously which was what my wife and I wanted when we went to see it. We've had enough drama in our life recently and just wanted to laugh. This movie did that for us. I've read that the previews showed too many of the funny moments. We never saw any previews but I believe there were way more than two minutes of laughs in this movie.
