The Traitors UK (2022– )
9/10
Addictive viewing!
7 December 2022
This is reality television with a twist! Most reality shows choose extreme personalities, pit them against each other in mild challenges, surfacing drama from the close proximity of big egos. The Traitors picks relatively normal people and pits them against each other in brutal fashion. The ensuing drama is a result of natural paranoia!

I love this show because it feels like a social experiment. It's a real game of cat and mouse, with the traitors lying and scheming in an effort to stay undetected, and the faithfuls clutching as straws as they try to weed out the traitors. It's even more compelling that we, as the audience, know who the traitors are from the beginning.

When the show first starts, most contestants are quite polite, if a little cautious. No one is willing to throw any serious shade on the credibility of their fellows. But as the show goes on, the tension builds, and all sorts of crazy starts to happen. Great tv!

Good fun, but not as good as the original
11 September 2022
While this was an enjoyable watch, the original was a better movie. It's not a bad movie, but lacks the substance of the first. The script borrows many themes from its predecessor and even recreates many scenes. While this isn't a bad thing, once you've stripped these scenes out, you're left with a fairly light story and an even lighter script.

As it stands, this movie is currently (8.5 at time of review) rated higher than the following action movies: Gladiator, Leon, Avengers End Game and Infinity Wars), The Dark Knight Rises, Die Hard, The Terminator, Blade Runner).

Seriously guys?

You've either all lost perspective, or you are scientologists keeping Tom's career alive.

Amazing, Inspiring, Special
10 September 2022
How is this rated only 7.1 at time of writing? I've just finished the season, and reading some of the lower reviews, they are from those who never really gave it a chance.

This is a high quality production, with an amazing cast, they should all be very proud for what they have created.

The first few episodes introduce our characters, with Chiwetel Ejiofor playing Faraday, the spaceman who first has to learn how to be human. There are some genuinely laugh out loud moments as he adapts to our strange customs, barely able to string an intelligent sentence together. His alien nature means he lacks compassion and instead his overwhelming drive is to accomplish his mission.

Key to the success of the mission is Justin Falls (brilliantly played by Naomie Harris). As the series progresses, Faraday becomes more eloquent, and starts developing human emotions such as love and compassion. Although Faraday's mission is an important one, it's the journey of the soul he takes that is the thing of beauty.

This is an inspiring tv show, and deserves a much higher rating.

For All Mankind (2019– )

A fantastic alternate reality - for unwoke people
4 July 2022
Why is it that reviewers nowadays consider anything that gives women prominent roles, anything that sheds a light on the inequalities of race, or anything that plays with politics, "woke". Generational naivety perhaps?

For all mankind has all of the above. It's set in the 80s on an alternate timeline whereby the question is asked: "what if the US were not the first nation to step foot on the moon? What if it was the Russians?" In our reality, the space race fizzled out when Armstrong uttered those famous words. NASAs funding was cut. Otherworldly ambitions were replaced with on world concerns.

But in For All Mankind's reality, Russias victory fuelled the space race. And what we are treated to is a very human story, with fascinating parallels to our own world, albeit with a different history being written. It's fantastic television.

For those that think it too boring, or indeed too "woke" obviously did not grow up on the 80s. This was a decade when all of the social and political issues that are considered "woke" were prevalent and a big part of every day life.

Epic television
2 July 2022
As a 45 year old guy who grew up in the 80s, this show appealed to me, bringing back fond childhood memories of fashion, music, and a world without mobile phones or social media - bliss!

But what really sets this is the fantastic story and emotional connection you make with the characters.

Seasons 1-3 were brilliant, but for me, season 4 takes it to a whole new level. It has homages to the great horror films of the 80s (Nightmare on Elm street being the most famous). In season 4, we see a twist in the storyline, whereby the main villain has a face, and it makes all the difference. The scriptwriting is masterful, and the direction Spielbergesque.

Some of the scenes will be remembered for a long time, such as Max's narrow escape to the tune of Diana Ross, and 11's epic battle with 1, before she banished him to the upside down.

This is television of the highest quality, I feel myself getting emotional just thinking about it. 10/10.

Finally - proper Star Trek!
28 June 2022
Strange New Worlds is reminiscent of The Next Generation, in that each episode appears to be its own story. This is a formula that worked wonders previously, so it's very pleasing we're returning to it.

The first few episodes of any new series are about introducing the characters, and SNW's characters are engaging and likeable. You'll meet a (relatively) young Spock, an even younger Uhura, a rather dashing Captain Pike, and a security officer who is the descendent of a Star Trek legend (no spoilers!),

As a massive Trekkie, I spent my younger years watching The Next Generation (my favourite), Voyager (next favourite) and DS9 (wasn't as keen). I've tried liking the newer series, but as each one came out, I was disappointed by the lack of 'Star-Trekiness'.

At the time of writing, only 3 episodes have been released, but I have to say that while they are not perfect, I'm delighted to say, Star Trek is back. As others have written, this has an optimistic feel about it - a far cry from the recent doom and gloom of recent Trek attempts. Sure, it may be cliched sometimes, but I can forgive this because while watching I sometimes catch myself feeling great pleasure being part of the journey again.

Very entertaining
21 March 2020
You can tell this is from the makers of Downton, it has the same kind of theme - upper class and lower class divide, though this time it is played out on a football pitch. I'm a keen football fan and was interested in this for the historical perspective, however, my wife is also a Downton fan and definitely not a fan of football and she loves it too! It's more of a societal drama than football drama. The characters are engaging, the world they have created is authentic and fascinating, oh and people have mentioned the beards! There are some great ones! Give it a go, it's bloody good fun.

Amazing documentary for football fans
19 August 2018
I'll start off by saying I'm a Man Utd fan. However, I'm a football fan first and foremost, I appreciate the artistry of football, I love watching teams who play beautifully and attack with creativity. And I take my hat off to Pep and the Man City team, they are wonderful to watch, a special team.

And thats what makes this documentary so good - not only do we get an unprecedented look behind the scenes of a premier league football club, we also get to see the journey Pep and his players took in a record-breaking season. It's a captivating story - if you are a fan of football, watch it.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (2016)
Season 4, Episode 0

Sherlock just isn't clever enough...
2 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the first and second series of Sherlock, they were refreshing, vibrant and atmospheric, albeit a little raw. The third series seemed to lose it's way a little, and "The Abominable Bride"continues this trend.

The script doesn't give us a clever Sherlock. I want a Sherlock that is full of clever observations, quick wittedness and genius-level edginess - the first two seasons did this well. However, since the third season, Sherlock seems intent on trying to be funny to satisfy the hardcode fans - resulting in moments that take you out of the story and make it feel like an artificial self-aggrandising theatre experience. And instead of a fiendishly clever Sherlock, we get a man who states the blindingly obvious, and very rarely observes anything truly interesting.

To do Sherlock any intellectual justice requires clever scriptwriting, and this is anything but that. Too often, the story and plot twists are explained to the viewer as if to think them an idiot. And Moffat and Gatiss (the scriptwriters) often throw in over-complicated verbosity in an attempt to cover up for the fact the script lacks real substance, and most of all heart and soul. It feels empty and contrived.

By all means, watch this episode if you're a Sherlock fan, it will give you some enjoyment. But it will also give you the feeling that you are waiting for something good and clever to happen, a feeling that is never satisfied.

An Extraordinary Movie
1 December 2013
Do you seek the movie that leaves a lump in your throat? Do you seek a movie with emotional depth because you yearn to 'feel' something more than the mundanity of your world? Do you seek a genre-defining movie? If the answer is 'yes' to any of these questions, you've found that movie. This isn't Rocky, although I understand comparisons because it's a 'fighting movie' firmly rooted in drama. It's better than Rocky. Much better. Don;t be fooled, this isn't a film about fighting in a physical sense. It's a film about fighting in the spiritual sense. Two brothers provide the core of something very special. Just watch it. And feel the tingles.

Beauty placed in time
27 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Every so often, a film comes along that gives you silent pause as the credits roll up at the end. This is one of those films.

Darius (played by Aubrey Plaza) is a young woman who feels out of place in the world. She enjoyed a happy childhood, marveling at the natural wonders of the world, but the death of her mother at the age of 14 created a bubble of indifference which has surrounded her ever since. She's interning at Seattle Magazine, a publication ran by the career driven Bridget (Mary Lynn Rajskub).

On the morning Brainstorming session for new editorial pieces, Bridget asks for ideas. Jeff (Jake Johnson), one of the full-time journalists, suggests a story on a quirky new ad he had recently become aware of;

"Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed."

Jeff's motivations for the story are far from sincere. He hopes to reignite a romance with an old flame, a woman who has never left his mind, and one who haunts him more as he feels his identity being corrupted in the world of Bridget. Bridget agrees to the story, and so Jeff takes two interns with him on his 'vacation' - Darias, who's imagination was stirred by the ad, and Arnau, a naive young Indian graduate whose intellect rules his instincts.

And so the journey begins to find out whether Kenneth (played by Mark Duplass) - the enigmatic ad-writer - is a delusional maniac or genius-time-machine-inventor. A man who works in a supermarket. Who believes he is getting followed by the government.

This is a film about time, regret, and the natural human yearning to be more than we are. But, it's also a film about hope, determination, and believing the beautiful moments await us should we be wise enough to let go. Very few films still have me wondering how it will end with just 15 minutes left.

Kenneths (Duplass) character is fascinating to watch. Riddled with insecurities, it's easy to write him off as a kook. But a poignant few moments with nothing more than a camp fire and a zither suddenly have you re-evaluate the substance of the man.

As Darias wrestles with the wonders that Kenneth brings to her world, an unconventional romance blossoms.

Watch the movie, drop all expectations before you do. It will be different to anything you watched before. Enjoyably so.
