The Crown: Willsmania (2023)

Duller than dishwater
30 January 2024
I had downloaded this episode for the plane and it was sleep inducing. It stands apart from all other previous episodes of. THE CROWN distinguished by it slow pace, pathetic attempts to make Charles theme as if he really loved and cared about his late wife Diana, and depiction of Prince William, as a brooding and sullen spoiled teenaged heir to the throne. Honestly., the episode was so awful. That I seriously considered stopping right there and not continuing with the season. There is not much else to be said other than the further depiction of Prince Philip as peacemaker and adoring father of Prince Charles. Rather a pathetic attempt, in my opinion, to paint him as a person with soft feelings toward his male progeny.

Cheesier the better
5 June 2022
If you're stressed out about the state of affairs in the world right now this is the antidote. The best part is figuring out whether the country of Lavania is an island in the Caribbean, A country in Eastern Europe or a hybrid of Jamaica and Czechoslovakia. Sometimes it's just nice to watch a fun diverting cheesy Netflix movie.

"Paris Murders"
3 January 2022
They called us series " The Paris murders" on PBS masterpiece and also miss label series 4 episode one as season one episode one. If you choose to watch as a paid subscriber of TBS masterpiece you will be shown the first episode of the fourth season with no background of Seasons 12 and three to help you understand the main character. I find this to be extremely annoying and will probably not watch past this first episode. There are better options out there amongst the many excellent French crime shows. On the slightly lighter side you also have Candice Renoir which is available on the acorn channel.

Poorly researched, Highly derivative
30 October 2020
Highly derivative And a waste of a fine actress and a waste of a fine actress Chloe Sevigny. Having experienced life as a military spouse including multiple moves, I can say that right out of the gate this is completely in accurate. The lack of attention to truthfulness and detail is enough to turn me off this show.

Whimsical slice of life in Puglia
7 November 2018
I saw this film last night as part of the Denver Film Festival. The film screening was actually held at the University of Denver rather than a festival venue so the crowd was different than usual for the festival. The director spoke to us before and after the film and it was lovely to hear his personal story behind the making of the film including the fact that most of his actors are "regular folks." The south cape of Puglia is a poor, down-trodden place where, as the director says, "men stand outside bars." Poetry, nature, politics the pope and the mafia all exist here and at times they are in perfect harmony.

Overhyped Paul Dano Directorial Debut
4 November 2018
I saw this film last night as part of the Denver Film Festival special presentations section. "Fine performances" cannot save this slow-moving, depressing drama. If you want to spend nearly two hours watching the disintegration of a marriage in a miserable Montana town set amidst the bland 1960's setting of baseball games on the radio and mostly empty streets of the western town where they filmed this drivel, then have at it. Ed Oxenbould as the son gives an interesting performance.

I enjoyed this film!
3 November 2018
Just saw this at the DENVER Film Festival. Ignore the critics. The leads had excellent chemistry and the film was well paced. Hey folks- this is based on a true story forget the PC police and their BS comments.. I enjoyed the original French film but this one stands on its own. Very enjoyable film.

Terrible Film
11 November 2017
I saw this tonight at the Denver Film Festival. It was ghastly and I left just over halfway through the film. What a waste of talent. Two great leads given dreadful material. Supporting players offer some of the worst acting I have ever seen on screen(the children of the two main characters). See this director's Italian language film-HUMAN CAPITOL instead.

Well done Indie film
15 November 2008
I saw this film last night @ the Starz Denver Film Festival. My husband and I decided to see it @ the last minute after hearing rave reviews from a festival volunteer who had been to a screening earlier in the day. We were intrigued, having lived in Yonkers for 3 years and it is always a treat to see a film and meet the director afterwords @ the Q and A. We were not disappointed. The above comments do a good job of describing the film. Indeed, the viewer is drawn into the lives of these characters and it is refreshing to see a true Indie film as opposed to a big budget, Hollywood extravaganza. The acting is great-you will recognize many of the actors from more high profile films/TV. The lead, Guiry, was most recently a star of the ill-fated TV series "The Black Donneleys. The film has scenes in four cities: Yonkers, Atlantic City, Miami and Las Vegas. It is especially interesting to see Vegas from the point of view of a "regular" gambler as opposed to the highly glamorized view the film-goer gets from an "Oceans Eleven," for example. Christine Lahti is amazing in this film. Support independent film-making in the U.S. and go see it when it comes out!

Chilling depiction of life in East Germany before the wall fell
11 November 2006
I saw this film last night at the Denver film festival. The small theater was standing room only-the director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck remained standing in the back throughout the entire film! He introduced the film at the beginning and then took questions afterward. One interesting comment he made was that this film is enjoying success outside of Germany similar to that of "Run Lola Run," but where that film was most enjoyable, "Lives of Others" leaves people feeling very sad."

Indeed, this is a "heavy" movie and at 137 minutes, it is not for the "short attention span crowd! The attention to detail is incredible. The director explained how the prop master for the film was extremely careful with accuracy down to the finest detail of life at that time in East Germany. Viewers who stick it out are richly rewarded with a film that, according to Henckel von Donnersmarck, accurately depicts the sort of experience many artists of the time endured when their lives were invaded by "Stasi" (Secret Police)spies, hundreds of thousands of shadow characters who did not really live their own lives but in a perverse way, lived vicariously through those of their victims.

The acting is excellent. Some may remember Martina Gedeck from her role as "Martha" in "Mostly Martha," a German release from a few years ago. She is beautiful in a subtle performance as Christa-Marie, an East German stage actress who performs the lead role in Dreyman's play about a factory worker who has visions. We see her perform near the beginning of the film and soon learn she and Dreyman are lovers. Sebastian Koch is believable as the talented and handsome writer Dreyman who seems to actually be in the favor of the Stasi. Ulrich Muhe at first appears as a Stasi interrogator, cold and unfeeling. He soon comes to learn perhaps more than he wants to know about the actress, the playwright and their circle of friends.

The director commented that although Muhe has garnered praise and awards for his characterization of the Stasi spy, he feels that Sebastian Koch also gives a great performance. Another interesting side note explained by von Donnersmarck is the fact that most of the former Stasi Spies have never been held to account for their crimes against the innocent people of the former East Germany. In fact, one of those people defended himself by saying that his volumes of detailed reports were all "made up" and now he makes a career as a sort of "ambulance chasing" lawyer helping these former spies sue anyone who accuses them of having spied on them! Huge sums of money are even now, being paid in reparations to these "victims" instead of to the actual victims of that totalitarian regime-incredible !

Soundtrack?
19 November 2005
Just saw this great film at the Starz Denver International Film Center. The soundtrack is wonderful and we would like to buy it. Any suggestions? I would recommend the movie for those who enjoy Italian cinema. My husband is a jazz pianist and loved the film. There are some great early scenes where the two friends attend a jazz workshop in Umbria one summer. An Italian gentleman introduced the film and described it as a "very personal" film. Although it does not cover heavy subjects like the environment, politics and the like, it touches your heart, he explained. One of the most impressive aspects of the film was the convincing way in which the "musician characters" appeared to actually be playing their instruments. They were also very well cast and quite charming.

Geoffrey Rush is awesome !!!!
5 January 2005
Saw this film at the Denver Film Festival and found it to be intense and moving. Tony Fingleton spoke after the film ended. Making this film was truly a labor of love and he was actually moved to tears as he spoke about his childhood. He said he no longer speaks to his brother-very sad. He said that the film was originally planned as a made for television program but the budget was too great as it is a period piece. Competitive swim buffs, Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis fans alike should appreciate it. The actors playing the brothers when they are older are hot too ! I hope this film is able to be distributed widely so it can be seen by lots of people-it is a perfect film for families with older children . Highly recommend this film
