The Orville (2017–2022)
10/10
Sci-fi with a splash of humour
14 October 2017
I was expecting more of an outright parody with The Orville, but what I got instead was a witty, insightful sci-fi series that trumps the lens flare fiasco that is ST Discovery.

This is a show that respects sci-fi fans, with nods to a number of different sci-fi franchises - and very respectful nods too. The cast are great, I'm completely invested in them after two episodes, and can't wait to watch more of it.

This is what happens when you don't try to create a show that panders to every silly leftist liberal sensibility known to man i.e. you get a great show with a bright future.

Now, does that ray work on all fruits, or just bananas? Still giggling now hours later.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024)
1/10
Disappointing social justice warrior muck
12 October 2017
The initial trailers for Discovery had me worried. Then we had the delay in release, coupled with the backstory of internal turmoil. Now I understand why it was delayed, because they kept trying to polish a turd in the hope that it would shine. It didn't work.

The only saving graces in Discovery are the reasonably good visual effects, and Saru - apparently the only person in the cast who gets the ST universe.

Apart from that I couldn't care less if any of the cast live or die, which really shows how badly developed this entire premise is. The only other time I felt so disassociated from a cast was with Alien Covenant, where I just wanted the xenomorphs to chop them all up into tiny little pieces. I'd probably donate money to have Michael Burnham shot head first out of a photo torpedo launcher. No suit though. Just to be sure.

Anyways...what you get here is a politically correct romp through a social justice universe that has some of the worst acting you'll see this side of the Gamma quadrant - it's awful.

CBS have managed to create a show that's tried to appeal to so many audiences that it appeals to none, except the ST fans who are willing to watch any old pile'o'crap.

Whoever they're paying to upvote this piece of awful muck on IMDb won't be able to keep the facade up for much longer.

Please don't make a second season. Don't even think about it.

Tomorrowland (2015)
10/10
A fantastic sci-fi experience
19 September 2015
I very rarely write reviews for movies, but after watching Tomorrowland I've never seen a movie that's been so unfairly maligned by negative reviews, especially considering that this movie was an absolute joy from beginning to end. After watching it, and reading truly horrible, reviews I'm starting to think that somebody hired a few live bodies to slate this movie for their own specific reasons.

The script, actors and directors captured the feeling of endless possibilities perfectly. The FX were fantastic, there were no lulls in the plot, George Clooney did his thing perfectly, the child actors were incredible, and there were just enough twists and turns to maintain the pace.

Please, please watch this movie and make your own mind up - the negative reviews almost put me off, but I'm so glad I actually took the chance.

Actually there's one proviso here - and is probably something consistent with most of the negative reviews: If you lack imagination, or the yearning for a better world, then you'll hate this movie. Or you want to raise kids who aspire to be nothing more than reality TV actors. Or if you're a reality TV actor. Or your kids can't read or write because you don't think it's important. Or if you think science is dumb. Or if you can't embrace hope.

As for me...I loved it. I'll be watching it again and again :-)One of the best movies of 2015, and now on my "favourite movie" list.
