Dreams Awake (2011)
Surprisingly good
Mount Shasta is definitely the main star here. Don't get me wrong. It has a great cast of actors but the biggest spiritual aspect of this movie is the mountain itself. From what I read, Mount Shasta is a well known spot for all kinds of metaphysical activity. I thought what a great idea to make a spiritual movie at a spiritual location. Many experiences have been documented from people all over the world. Some have seen UFOs coming out of the mountain as well as mysterious openings inside the mountain where supposedly inhabitants live. There are vortex energies & portals; mysterious lights that seem to come from inside the mountain. In short, there is a lot of mountain energy going on there. With that said, Erin Gray's main character is caught up not only in the problems of the day but also with some haunted nightmares. She must figure it all out and does so with success. But not without the help with the mountain and an old reappearing man named Ambrose. I don't want to spoil the movie more than that but it has a great pay off at the end. Dreams Awake is full of surprises that may not be seen immediately but by watching it more than a couple of times. Very good movie and worth every minute.
Life of Pi (2012)
A work of art.
This movie was without a doubt a work of art. Weather it was the cinematography the special effects even the storytelling was all exceptional. This will be a Oscar nominated movie very worthy of a win or so. Watching this movie I felt transported into the movie like I haven't been before. With the religious and spiritual themes are simple and deep and reveals more questions about what your faith and belief than to answer them. Sense there was no preaching about religion or spirituality made it also more entertaining. The way the story unfolded it explored how our storied can get us through the worst of experiences and to deal with the aftermath. This was more of a survival story and how faith in god, a higher being, or just in yourself. The way Ang lee did the movie with the narration from old and young pi to music all the whole time so there aren't any slow dead scenes, and the result was a faster more entertaining film. With there being basically one character for most of the movie it was important that the character appeals to the audience feelings, but also having the right actor. Suraj Sharma was excellent as the adult Pi. His ability to make each emotional scene as equal to the others shows the talent he has. Even the tiger on the boat with him almost having human features but still keeping him the wild beast he is. Although the tiger is computer generated it is quite hard to tell a lot of the time with the way it acts during the movie. He was as important a character as Pi was. Most movies that seem to have a lot of computer graphics even 3D sometimes don't add to the movie even a way to hide a weak plot. This movie it was almost necessary especially with the heavy handed religious tones. What Lee invents with the integration of the ocean and the other animals is nothing but spectacular. He ability to marry the imagery and the experience was on par with movies like avatar and Hugo. Lee's preparation for the film and his passion for the subject matter further shows in this magical masterpiece that is a must see movie of the year.
Michael (1996)
A delightful heartwarming movie.
Travoltas portrayal of an this angel is an interesting one. What we know of angels is that they are great warriors, messengers of god and always seem to be perfect. What if they aren't. He plays a rude obnoxious, womanizer who will fulfill your wishes, and make you care enough about the world that you will be touched. So what happens when you don't believe in anything and you are sent to investigate a story, only to meet one with wings and looks less then angelic. William Hurt plays a cynic who is out to write about a possible hoax who ends up becoming a believer by the end. Andie MacDowell and the rest of the cast play great parts. It is enjoyable that the film unapologetically illustrates how wonderful like is and the little things that we take for granted, and we should enjoy every moment like it was our last. With some of the scenes in this movie that changes the different characters views on the reality of angels may make you wonder if our vision of angels could be changed.
Powder (1995)
A powerful and unforgettable story
This is a very rare gem of a movie. In a time when movies have a lot of fx to cover up a weak story, to graphic unnecessary violence and sex. Powder basically shows a pure and unique individual that is not accepted in today's society that has become jaded with discrimination, and overall being afraid of someone who looks different. There are several important elements in the movie. There is the paranormal factor that challenges what we know of science and the the human mind can achieve, the extent of human cruelty, love and forgiveness, and a hope that we may advance beyond technology. The most of all, raw emotion the reaches deep into the heart and leaves a impression that will stay with you. What also makes this movie great is that even though it is not a true story it could be. The idea of being different because of looks or something that makes you stand out from the status quo of the different groups, where we can all relate to. This movie achieves this in a powerful, passionate and inspirational way. This movie makes you sit back and take in everything, showing us what the world may be if we stop judging one another and start to accept our uniqueness. What also is shown in this movie is just that just because someone may be different with looks or how they act that they are some weaker or a part of the undesirables. Who time and again in this movie seem to show us that perception needs to be changed. One scene where we find out he has the highest I.Q. ever recorded.,to a scene where a hunter shoots a deer and powder touches the deer and the hunter and shows him the pain the deer feels before he dies that has a profound effect on the hunter. Another scene where Powder helps the local sheriff understand what his dying wife wants, which is to just reconcile with his son. You have a movie that looks like it could be a Carrie type movie but ends up showing the sad inability to treat Powder with any sense of humanity and dignity. No matter what he stays his pure positive self in some scenes showing the error of our ways and then in the end makes a final act that hopefully makes people want to change for the better.
