Karnan (2021)
9/10
Outburst of the oppressed
15 May 2021
I am glad that I didn't know that Karnan was helmed by the director of Pariyerun Perumal. Looking back at the movie with that in mind, there suddenly arises certain shots that are similar in both movies. The use of animals as a metaphor for the character's emotion is also a common theme in both movies. The landscape and the unabashed portrayal of endangered cultures also seems to be Mari's signature.

I have always been a fan of Dhanush. I never had a proper reasoning as to why, but now I realize that it's because of the way he balances both meaningless masala flicks and outliers that tread a different path in his career. In all honesty he tends to repeat the angry young man formula again and again, so much so that if you interlace scenes from Asuran and Karnan, you may not realize it.

As a malayalee, it was a joy to see Lal and Rajisha Vijayan in full swing in this movie. Lal seemed to tune into his inner Prakash Raj for this role.

Karnan was a blow to my privileged lifestyle as much as Pariyerum Perumal. Interesting to see that Karnan was literally a Pariyerum Perumal.

I Care a Lot (2020)
7/10
High potential concept not fully explored
13 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I Care a Lot was a movie that I had ignored initially because I mistook it to be of the drama genre tackling more sombre topics. On later realising that it was a thriller along the line of Gone Girl had me interested and then with the Golden Globe appreciation, it found itself in my watchlist.

The first part of the movie until the introduction Peter Dinklage had me genuinely disturbed, fearing for my future, my parents future. The idea that our life and how we spent our later phase of life was not entirely upto us had me really scared. With shift in dynamics with Dinklage's character, there was genuine dilemma as to support. Even though we see the evil nature of Marla, Roman is not a hero or anti-hero either. It was just two villains squaring off against each other. But after a few more minutes it was clear that movie was not going to be as grand as I expected.

Rosamund Pike and Peter Dinklage are easily what holds this movie. Rosamund Pike seems really comfortable playing characters that are inherently twisted but puts on a glossy sheen over themselves. Peter Dinklage also gives a genuinely intimidating performance. Its a marvel to see how he embraces his limitations to become a character that embodies menacing bossy villain. I would love to see him try out his range, since this seemed to be an extension of his Tyrion Lannister character.

The concept behind the movie had great potential and that is exactly was made the first part of the movie gripping, but then it seemed to end too soon without properly exploiting the characters and their capabilities.

Riches to rags and back
31 January 2021
Ironically, like all movies inspired from real life, the story is exaggerated and idealised into something far removed from real life.

The movie is the story about the story of Jacob, a wealthy businessman of high repute, being cheated by one of his most trusted dealers and thereby ending up in debt with his investors. Now its upto his son Jerry, who Jacob had been mentoring, and his wife to bring up his "ideal" family back to their previous status. I believe that if not for the direction of Vineeth and outstanding score by Shaan Rahman the movie might not have been as good as it is.

All the cast deliver apt performances. Ranji Panicker does what he does best, be the ideal cool father-figure that Malayalee youth expects their dads to be like. All other cast does what is asked of them. Nothing extraordinary from anyone, except maybe the mother whose attitude was a pleasant surprise. I was probably disappointed at the sister character having the least screen time, and contributes zero to the plot.

Rewatching the movie, especially right after watching "The Great Indian Kitchen", I noticed that Jacob's "ideal" family was a celebration of patriarchy. I had a major gripe at how Jerry is irritated and is protective when his sister is seen talking to group of boys while Jerry himself has a girlfriend and even youngest kid being always with girls is a funny gag around the family. I am not saying that every movies need to be progressive. This attitude is/was expected from a "reputed" family. But it suddenly became weird, when you start to notice that.

Cheesy but entertaining
14 December 2020
Season 1: The show seems to be single handedly carried by the William Peterson as Gill Grissom. Looking past the cheesy oneliners and statistically he is nerver wrong, he is the heart of the show. The do try to flesh out other characters with Warrick's Gambling addiction, Catherine's maternal arc and being the people person and Sara's emotional imbalance and passion towards work. But sadly Nick seem to have drawn the wrong of the straw there because he just passes of as just another guy. The show is cheesy made extra cringey by Marg somehow. But it is genuinely entertaining.

The Batman (2004–2008)

A different batman
28 November 2020
Just started rewatching this series. I remember watching this in cartoon network and thinking it was so cool. The new set of gadgets, anime like appearance and the ice-suit used to fight Mr.Freeze were my highlights.

The writing is a bit poor in the first season. I am hoping that is because they just want to show off the whole gallery of villains. But each of them seem to get defeated too soon. I like the fresh take, but I would really love it if they wrote better storylines, hopefully spanning episodes.

This batman might have been better appreciated if it didn't have the burden of being compared to BTAS.

Jackie Chan, Jet Li and a Mythical Setting
21 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Forbidden Kingdom is a fun project from Jackie Chan and Jet Li. It is not intended to be a classic in anyway. This is one-time off movie. This movie was released in a time when producers or the studio was not keen on building cinematic universes. I could easily see this would bee stretched thin to multiple movies leading to forbidden kingdom. Thank God, that was a simpler time.

I am not as much familiar with Jet Li's works as I am of Jackie Chan, but I am pretty sure that Jet Li went out of his comfort zone to potray the Monkey King. While the Silent Monk was right up his alley, Monkey King seemed to be more "fun" than the usual Jet Li. Eventhough this effort was noticeable, it was not so bad. Jackie Chan as usual plays to his strengths. Casting his as the drunken master was a no-brainer. The casting of Jade Warlord and the seeker was the disappointing one. To know that Donnie Yen was rejected as the Jade Emperor, broke my heart. The Seeker was sub-par to say the least. He lacked the charisma of protagonist. Meanwhile Golden Sparrow just existed.

The highlight of the movie was undoubtedly the showdown between the two masters. That long action sequence was why I decided to rewatch the movie. The dance between the two legends was a treat to see.

The action sequences are filled with wirework, the plot is not bare minimal, just enough to make it work. Watch it for fun and don't expect a classic.

Super 30 (2019)
9/10
Indian Pursuit of Happyness
14 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story of Anand Kumar has been bollywoodised to create the movie Super 30. If you are going to watch this expecting a true account of his trials and tribulations, then better watch a documentary. This is a Bollywood movie based on his story. There are exaggerations, drama and sacrificed romantic angles.

But the movie sells the idea with minimum hero-worshiping.Even though the final confrontation between the students and the goons might have been over the top, there is no one-man army stunts. Kudos to Hrithik for being a teacher and nothing else.

This was Hrithik's attempt at doing something he was not comfortable with, and he did it admirably. I was getting Pursuit Of Happiness vibes throughout. Never did he break into super-graceful dance moves or a pandering display of his physique. He was faithful to his role. This was probably a project that he did to convince himself about his acting skills more than anything else.

Good Job Hrithik Roshan, despite the not-so-perfect makeup you get a 30/30 for your effort.

Just another action movie
13 November 2020
This is just another action flick and don't expect anything else. You already know what you are going to see and that's what you get. Watch it for the stunts, don't ponder deep into it more than what they show, because there is nothing there. At best, I was not bored watching this. De-aging still creeps me out, but its better compared to some others. Certain sequences like the motorcycle chase were cool. I am guessing Will Smith did this since he already got into a similar role as deadshot in Suicide Squad

Gets way more thrashing than it deserves
3 October 2020
To be fair, when I watched the movie in theatre I was thoroughly disappointed. Now I think that was because of the high expectations I had on an Aamir Khan starrer. I might have expected more from Mr.Perfect.

But now when I rewatched it, I realized that this was a decent enough movie. I guess the major flaw in the movie was, as is the general curse of bollywood, the song sequences. Most, if not all, of the song sequence were unwanted and inconsequential. The climatic song even if was not inconsequential could have been exchanged for some other sequence. While we are at the topic of music, the background music also needed some work, especially those for Amitabh Bachan's Khudabaksh.

Other than the previously mentioned, the movie was a fairly enjoyable one. Aamir Khan's character of Firangi was an obvious rip-off of Jack Sparrow. But the character had his own charm. Firangi's deceitful character kept us second guessing. Add to that Amitabh Bacchan's screen presence.

This movie is not a ground breaking movie, but with a decent enough plot and genuinely well made action sequences - this movie deserve much more credit.

I don't understand why filmmakers keep on casting Katrina Kaif, apart from being eye-candy, she had zero contribution to the movie.

Beautiful and Impactful movie
2 October 2020
I was hesitant to watch this movie despite hearing great reviews about it. The total runtime of almost 3 hours didn't help me coax me into watching the movie. But now after watching it, I hope this movie reaches more and more people.

This is not a movie with a commercial movie star with punch dialogues trailing off into intense action sequence in order to save a village. This is a movie that shows a mentally imbalance person trying to stand up for the helpless with regular old protest, though his insanity enables him to go into extreme quirky levels when planning protests.

The movie shows how dark the accepted norm is. Rampant corruption. breach of trust and general fraud are all accepted and it is the people protesting that are shamed and treated as outcasts.

A Robert Rodriguez movie
2 October 2020
Before you watch this movie, take a look at the director's name again. Its a Robert Rodriguez movie through and through. Its one of those movie that has zero logic and purely comes under the tag of guilty-pleasure.

Watch it for stupidly beautiful action sequence, beautiful girls like Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan being hot. Let me mention Michelle Rodriguez separately once more, not just because I always had a celebrity crush on her, but also because of her appearance in the climax scene. Pure Wow moment.

In short this a guilty pleasure movie, supposed to make no sense whatsoever. Shout out to Robert De Niro. He was... interesting..

Cast Shines
20 September 2020
I found this movie chasing after Radhika Madan. To be honest, I didn't expect much from her, but boy was I blown! After watching Radhika Madan's performance in Mard ko dard nahi hota, this seemed like a whole new avatar.

But it was not just Radhika Madan, the whole cast played their part with geniune chemistry. Sunil Grover was probably the best one in this movie. Villain and Hero at same time. More than India and Pakistan analogy, Kaurava and Pandava analogy would have suited better with Sunil Grover portraying a mix of Krishna and Shakuni.

This was a very fun movie to watch!

Mayakkam Enna (2011)

Watch this before you follow your passion
20 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Mayakkamm Enna is an almost honest account of the strife and tribulations that one can expect when following one's passion.

The movie sends across a lot of messages centered around the core theme of passion. The hard work, dedication, persistence and determination needed to find grounding in a passion oriented career is shown without being a burden or lecture to the viewer. At least the protagonist, Karthik had pure unrelenting emotional support from his friends, sister and wife at each juncture of his life. This may not be true in everyone's life. He had the validation of literaly being called and accepted as a "genius", despite him not finding a ground in professional photography.

The movie shows the dedication and determination in pursuing his mentor, and at the same time eking out a living by doing whatever he could do with his skills. One interesting aspect to note here is the Karthik never strays from his craft for financial well-being, Every minor job he does is related to photography, which would only hone his skills for his future. Even though it is not as practical, sends home the message that his success didn't come just because of talent, but also from his practice.

This movie is not only intended for people who is following the passion but also the people around them. Even though professionally Karthik is struggling, going through a series of ups and downs, he almost always has the support of those around him. I am sure that whatever success he is shown to get would have been even more unrealistic if it was not for the support system lead by his friend Sundar and later Yamini.

The movie, though a great one, still needs a polish. Certain characters and instances seemed jarringly wrong. The main ones that stood out were the ideal cool dad and weirdly Dhanush's sister, who in the second act undergoes an unjustified character transition into a hateful, jealous character. Not sure if its emotionally connected to Yamini's history with Sundar, but this is never explored. Personally I felt as if sister's arc could have been more cleaner and instead add a little more spice to Padmini's character which was rather bland.

I had a gripe with the ending too when Karthik wins the ICP Infinity award. But even more convenient was the presence of Mahesh. The photo shown to be nominated was the one which he has acquired from Karthik. Despite the movie making it clear that at least an year had passed after that incident (Yamini gets pregnant twice), I seemed odd that this photo was nominated. And since they were going with this story telling device, I personally feel that it would have been a better ending if Mahesh won with the stolen photo and Dhanush being a bigger man congratulating him. This would have brought the depression arc to a full circle with the idea of acceptance. The audience along with Karthik and his close ones would know that he was the winner nevertheless.

I really liked the subtle message of dating culture that Selvaraghavan nudged into the plot

Another Gem from Suraj
7 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It is disheartening to hear that this movie didn't get as much "traction" (uninentional pun) as the other movies that released along with this. I know that, despite seeing posters everywhere, I didn't watch this in theaters.

Kudos to Rajisha for taking up this role and delivering it with aplomb. I am not sure if she went through training for the role, but she did seem the part or at least made the audience believe in her passion for cycling. Niranjan Raju was kind of a letdown since his casting seemed to be a nepotism plug. I wish he could have trained/worked more towards his role. His fitness level seemed miles far from the competition. Even better would have been to cast someone with actual experience with track events. In addition to this, the younger leads needed some polish with their chemistry and delivery of dialogues.

But above all this stands Suraj Venjaramood with his tour de force performance that beats everything and everyone else. Barely appearing in the posters, this movie was carried by Suraj's skill. Using his shortcomings for the plot, Suraj transitioned from a doting father to a rebellious coach and then to a towering mentor with masterful ease.

No Stakes
31 August 2020
I have only ever been exposed to Star Trek through this movie series, so this is not a very dependable opinion. Count to it the fact that I saw the last movie years back. So the characters and their relationship progression is lost on me. Case in point, There appeared to be a focus on the frenemies relationship of Spock and Bones, but if it had not been explicitly mentioned by Kirk at one point, I never got that vibe out their escapades.

The crew seemed to be packed with top notch geniuses of their respective fields. Impossible is just a word that they like to use/hear when accomplishing the feat with relative ease. At one point Scotty modifies cargo beam to beam out Spock and Bones, be he doesn't pick them up togther since he is not sure if they will get amalgamated. But the very next useage of the beam is to rescue crew in batches of 20!

Despite having suspended my disbelief in its entirety, I still craved for something akin to a dangerous situation. Despite the high stakes and increasing risks, nothing ever seems to be at risk.

Out and out Madhavan Movie
29 August 2020
13b is a Madhavan movie and nothing else. All the other actors in the movie are replaceable. The only character/actor that makes any genuine contibution to the movie is Madhavan.

The plot is different and towards the end is almost predictable. But I guess the director didn't it to be a suspense anymore at that point, because the clues to the reveal almost took half the screen space whenever it was there.

Apart from Madhavan, all other actors/characters were largely forgettable. The second half introduces a few more characters in an half-assed attempt at building suspense. But I guess any average viewer would have figured out the suspense by that point.

The movie has genuinely good scares, a refreshing premise and an apt color palette. The songs are forgettable, except maybe the end credit song which takes the crown for being the most out-of-place, cringe-inducing and genre-confused song.
