As bad as the press says.. and then some!
4 January 2024
I wanted to check, it really is an appallingly bad movie.

Am I alone in seeing how this was written, designed and even story boarded with extensive use of AI?

Every aspect of this movie is made up from a large amount of meaningless content without any connective tissue whatsoever. A soup of randomly collected assets.

The clumsy attempt at bringing three dimensionality to incredibly flat characters through unjustified changes of mind.. The tasteless production design.. the atemporality of events.

Clearly Netflix tried an AI heavy pipeline in order to more make money. The result is grotesque.

What a disappointment

I used to be a fan of Caro, being french and grown up in the 90's, and being a visual effects artist. I can't believe how bad this film come back turned out to be! I watched it all as respect for the cast, which is good, but to no avail... Poor story line, vague plot, even vaguer religious connotations. The references to Solaris really made me angry, being a fan of that film (the original Russian version, Tarkosky's). What nerve using such a mater piece with such superficiality! It does look like a production butchered film... but to be honest I found the production design bad, that mix of retro and space technology simply doesn't work here. And the visual effects and artistic direction very poor and repetitive. OK it seems like money was scarce... but also seems like no real effort was made. What a shame...

Still, waiting for more Caro, this had to be an accident!

Superb approach of age and loneliness
1 February 2005
I saw this film by chance, was working at home with the TV humming, and it caught my attention. Didn't do much work! It's a great piece of acting, Duvall is amazing as an old Cuban bachelor, and Harris is very touching as a lonely retired sailor (oops sorry... captain!). MacLaine has a smaller part, but acts it perfectly, with a classy economy of emotions. They all fit their characters like gloves.

The whole film is a quite little masterpiece, and extremely emotional. Couldn't stop the tear flow ;o) I'm rushing to see what else that director did, Randa Haines. Not surprised this film was directed by a woman, it's got that light yet deep emotional quality...

Another excellent aspect of this film is the way the atmosphere is depicted. You can feel the heat, and laid back lifestyle of... wherever it's taking place... Miami? A superb sound track, Cuban Son, helps a lot too.

Great film to see if you're in a thoughtful mood, and if you're looking for something else than action blockbusters.
