A Simple Pursuit In This Film
9 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Surrounded around the dense fog, this film is always in a wet, cold, dark, pouring or misty or cloudy atmosphere with many long shots and several silent scenes at a slowly pace. Since Thien got the news of his sister-in-law Teresa's death, he had fell into the state of sorrow deeply. He took care of his nephew Dao but couldn't reply this little kid's simple questions: What is the "belief"? Where is the "Heaven"? Can you(Thien) take me to the Heaven to see my mother?

At the same time, we can see Thien walking or wandering in the nearly invisible fogs, trying to open up his own self-discovery journey about hunting for his brother Tam. For him, this so-called "God" took away his dearest family Teresa(by a traffic accident) and his lover Thao(by making her to be a nun).

And there are some strange dreams intertwining the reality in a mysterious way, such as Thien found Tam's new wife and their infant in Son Dien, then they went to Tam's house. They didn't find Tam. There were just several rows of yellow cocoon shells in front of Tam's house.

Those indications can point one core question of this film: "Should the existential meaning of human life depend on the God and the religion?" It leads to the simple pursuit of this film: A person who pursues the meaning of life grows from living in religiosity(like social and collective rituals or any forms) to living in spirituality(like ultimate personal salvation). That is, as the title of this film, I think "something inside the yellow cocoon shell" is Thien's lost soul (as the old lady's saying). Through one of his dreams, it reveals subconsciously as the symbol of his missing brother.

At the last scene, Thien lay down in the small river, resting at ease, peacefully. It seems that he finally found his answers from the dreams. Although the searching is fruitless, his soul is still gradually recovering.

Hatching (2022)

Something behind the traditional horror elements of Pahanhautoja
4 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After hearing the good reviews of Hatching (Finnish: Pahanhautoja) (2022), I immediately watched it just now. It's a story about a teenage girl Tinja who decided to hatch an egg from a big crow out of sympathy and then this option changed her family henceforward. At first, it's just like a prototype of the family drama in a horror way as The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), revealing how a perfect and flawless Finnish family became into an ugly, impure and morally degenerated one. From utopia to dystopia, from function to dysfunction. And this type of setting had constantly reappeared in recent horror films. That's why I think the plot of this film is simple and its screenscript can't be praised as the most creative one, but the storytelling, editing and makeup are ok. The acting part is awesome and incredible to make me stunned. Just remain a pity that some visual effects are too fake.

That is, Pahanhautoja has two traditional horror elements like some of horror films: The first one is making/hatching and then destroying the monster, it can be traced from Frankenstein (1931) to Gremlins (1984) or Aliens (1986) (in a different way); the second one is the original human fear of replacement, it shares the same fearful point as "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" series. And there's one film close to Pahanhautoja is Splice (2009), including the whole course of hatching, destroying and replacing. The difference between them is that Splice is about sex and propagating, its replacement is about the biologically social-substitution; but Pahanhautoja is about innocent violence and self-disclosure, its replacement is about revealing the subconsciously existence.

On the surface, it seems that Alli is the dark side of Tinja, growing up from Tinja's vomits and negative emotions (her nervousness and anxiety to the gym competition). Look into the deeper aspect, Alli is the symbol of the unconscious mind of Tinja. She reflected in accordance with Tinja's mental status so they shared an action connection with synchronicity. She did all evil deeds that Tinja was afraid but eager to do, causing Tinja to be extremely worried and anxious at all. Like one sharp fragment cruely tearing the hypocritical life, Tinja and Alli had to be appear in the same place at the same time, out of the dark closet, completing their self-disclosure. Hence the interaction of these girls and her family increased the tension of this film.

Though Tinja holded the terrible attitude toward Alli and still blamed her and tried to destroy her, she knew that their life is connecting through an attentive hatching. If Alli died, she died too. In the final scene, Mother incautiously stabbed Tinja and went to a breakdown. Soon the body of Alli sitted up after receiving Tinja's blood and recepting all of her exterior (and interior). The film goes to an open end.

Is she Tinja or Alli ?

Refer to some endings of horror films, I would choose Alli or their life is combining to ONE. Because it's a whole course of replacement and life issues of an individual's life. Just like humans especially fear the one who is alike with their appearances and they have to confront these mental conflicts for good. From the self-disclosure of these two girls to Alli's replacement, it means that Tinja accepted the other side of her and the FEAR soothed and "LIFE" would go on.

The concept of this film is ok. So I score it "7".

A short review for this film
15 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film consists of four parts. Every part is around one core topic: depicting people's free wills to execute death penalty or refuse to retrieve of one's life, under an extremely despotic regime. Also, those four parts bring different watching feelings to me.

Part 1 "There Is No Evil" This is the most shocking part for me, making me stunnng and unforgettable for its ending. Although it starts in a slow-paced moving combing with several ordinary scenes, its ending even reveals that this middle-aged male executioner has his own family stuffs to solve, just as you and me.

Part 2 "She Said, 'You Can Do It'" This part describes a male soldier who wanted to avoid form killing a prisoner. At first, he behaved like a coward, almost trembling weeping for his duty to execute tonight's death penalty and receiving the warm advices and harsh words from his colleagues. (He constantly picked up his girlfriend's call as well.) Finally, he successfully escaped from the prison without killing one person, meeting his girlfriend. Just like their secret conspiracy! From their happy faces and the roadtrip sceneries that they drived and passed by, I can sense the wind, the sunshine and the freedom of joy.

Part 3 "Birthday" This part is the most reflective for me because the contrast of 'life vs. death' reveals in a sorrowful way. The girl understood that her boyfriend was her teacher's executioner (in exchange for 3 days off from work) at her teacher's funeral in her birthday. With bittersweet tears, the girl broke up with him, firmly declaring her position.

Part 4 "Kiss Me" This part shows a father chose to refuse to execute death penalty when he was a young soldier, causing he send out his daughther to relatives and firstly meet her after many years. He decided to suppress his desire to see her with silent endurance for a long time, just because he insisted that human lives deserved better outcomings other than death (though his daughter might be hard to forgive his behavior for destroying their family relationship). It seems that there are two sides obviously: One side is happily staying with family but full of feeling of guilty (being responsible for the cruel duties); the other side is tough but still believing humanity and justice, trying to live and love.

Unlike Part 1 (executioner himself) and Part 2 (an escaping soldier), Part 3 and Part 4 reveal why some people make their decision, and Part 4 shows how the protagonist insists the value of humanitarianism all the time. Under the despotic regime, this is truly hard to make a choice. It's the point that I respect the director of this film.

In sum, I recommend this film. It's worth watching!

It is all mind projection and love conquers all
14 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This story started at the beginning of the summer. At first, there was a colour part about a couple of Tarot cards at the table. The female fortune teller uncannily murmured to the main role Cleo, who was a sensitive woman suffering from nerves. After that, the whole film became into a black and white film. It means that Cleo got negative thoughts and considered everything in a pessimistic way. That's why her susceptible mind caught every sign from ordinary matters which just let her think of the Death. It as well revealed that Cleo and her friend Angele took a taxi and Cleo received some horrible messages like a human-skin mask, a voodoo doll, a crowd of bizarre people, a little scary story from a female taxi driver and news about the wars from a radio in a taxi. Cleo felt a strong antipathy towards this female taxi driver's distinctive behavior, but Angele praised the driver for her brave actions.

Next, Gruesome images still appeared again, like a man who performed swallowing a living frog and another man who took something sharp to pierce his arm. Even Cleo and another her friend Dorothe went to the cinema, what Cleo noticed was one scene of the funeral. In her sight, everything she saw was covered by the shadow of the Death. She became more and more superstitious until she met a man named Antoine in the park.

Antoine was a kind person with a warm heart. Although he talked of a horoscopic term "Cancer" that made Cleo mistook it as the disease, their pleasant talking still went on. Antoine told Cleo that he was a soldier and Death was an ordinary thing in his soldiering in Algeria. Cleo also told him about her fear to the Death. She thought she was waiting for one day she passed away so that she was very sad about all of it. As time passed by, they got closer to each other. In the end, Antoine asked for Cleo's selfie photo and prepared to go back to the battlefield. He said he didn't want to leave. Cleo said that we together stayed here right now, my fear seemed to be gone and I can sense happiness increasingly.

That is, there are no ghosts, spirits and paranormal events but a superstitious woman in this film. It's nothing to do with anything religious or supernatural. It's all Cleo's mind projection fallacy that causes her to be capped from the shadow of the Death. The only medicine for easing this fearful mindset is LOVE. As a saying goes well: Love conquers all.

The silent specimens imply the man's choice and death
6 September 2018
This is a great masterpiece of short films. It tells about when a man passed through different times by engaging an experiment, he became a so-called time traveler and had an love affair with a woman. The ending of this story which makes an astounding effect to every viewer is that the man finally met the woman but killed by the enemies near the pier. This wonderful arrangement of an classical plot affects the 1995 film "Twelve Monkeys" and being praised by viewers all the time. Surprisingly, I find a interesting comparison between a simile and a metaphor in one scene that he and she walked through an array of zoological specimens at the Museum. The simile is the living human jumping cross the flow of time. It is a circulating space-time continuum. The metaphor is the silent specimens sitting and standing to put on display window. It is an uncirculated symbol as space-time fragments. It means that I compare Life with Death, also comparing changeableness with unchangeableness. The man's choice is to give up the chance to obtain a better future and choose what he did love. It's just like he chose a bad end and the appearance of specimens presaged his death. The man's death and the implication of specimens may not be relevant, but I think there's something inconceivable in this combination. At last, it's pleasant and fascinating for me to remember the plot of "La jetée" in several times. I will keep this great masterpiece in my mind once and for all.

Compensation, revenge and sacrifice
18 August 2018
While the film began, I was fascinated by the camera moving, the angle of camera, still pictures and freeze frame of its own. Just like enjoy the magical moment that every ordinary scene came into the ridiculous irony. It was a film about compensation, revenge and sacrifice. At first, Martin wanted the compensation from Steven, and what he wanted mostly was a substitute of a father. But it was in vain. Next, Martin cursed the Murphy family. It was his revenge. Lastly, the curse developed into the sacrifice. Steven had to kill one person to save the others' life. He had to do that. I wondered that the most sacred sacrifice was killing, because depriving one's life has always been the utmost punishment to human beings and the pleasant behavior for worshiping God. All the metaphors and the arrangements in this film made me think twice and felt interesting.

That's why I subjectively liked it.

So I gave it 10/10.

Contradictions between barbarity and humanity
18 August 2018
*Analysis of the characters in the film

The main point in the film is the conflict between Hearn and Cummings. Hearn is the representative of humanity and moral, and Cummings is the opposite against him. There are several events showing the conflict. Firstly, Cummings summons Hearn afterward and chastises him for the remark, then cautions him against treating the soldiers humanely and urges him to accept that war means killing and death. Cummings suggests that Hearn instills fear and hatred in his men, but the lieutenant rejects Cummings' notion as immoral. Secondly, Cummings tells Hearn that in this moment of great destiny for America the only morality is power.

There are also several branch lines about the platoon. Most of them are tragic. For example, Gallagher is devastated to learn that his pregnant wife has died in childbirth. Croft, who is painful because of the infidelity of his wife, turns out to be calloused and brutal, and does not hesitate to personally execute a Japanese prisoner during the initial landing. Wyman, who is bitten by a poisonous snake and dies quickly at a river crossing. When Hearn's group is fired upon from the grove, Wilson is wounded. Despite Croft's protest, Hearn orders him to be taken back to headquarters, but the corporal dies moments later. Roth sprains his ankle during the dangerous climb and then later freezes in fear on a narrow precipice. Intending to spur Roth on, Croft calls him a "lousy Jew," causing the soldier to bolt and fall to his death.

Fearing Croft will lead them to their deaths, Red challenges him but backs down when the sergeant threatens to kill him. At the peak, Croft investigates the other side of the hill alone only to be shot and killed by another Japanese patrol. What leads these people to the deathful disaster is not the cruelty of war, but the fear which is produced by people himself.

At the end of the film, Cummings visits the recovering Hearn in the infirmary a few days later. Hearn tells the general that Ridges and Goldstein's dedication saved his life and bolstered his belief that man's innate decency will survive the viciousness of war. Maybe this is an optimistic expectation to reveal the commitment about humanity.

*The theme of the novel

The story is not simply a narrative of a long war, but something deeper. It reflects a social and historical themes. The background of the story is a fictional and tropical island. There are two parallel clues: the war and the people in the war.

The story takes place on an island in the South Pacific, allowing readers to see the relationship between officers and soldiers in the American army, which is also a microcosm of American society. Therefore, "The Naked and the Dead" is over the scope of war literature. It is a symbolic to the contradiction between barbarity and humanity. The meaning of "Naked" in the title is "unshielded" and "non-protection". It can also be understood as "the explosion of human". The thought behind the novel is realism and social criticism. It also has a strong naturalistic color. By using the behaviour out of fear and horror to describe the people as "the Naked and the Dead", Mailer seems to warn the public that fascism may revive in this century. This is an innovation to those regular war theme novels.

"They are always living in the wild and irrational ...... and I am lost in the kaleidoscope of death inside." Perhaps there are always only two characters in Norman Mailer's novel: "the Naked", who lose the conscience of humanity, and "the Dead", the shadow of death shrouded.

*Differences between the novel and the film

When Norman Mailer saw the movie one night with his second wife, Adele, he complained to her that Hollywood "had ruined his story." Raoul Walsh, the director, is quoted in the article as saying the film would not stick too closely to the novel, as many of the incidents that were considered shocking at the time of the book's release had already appeared in other films. He had the script rewritten--often as the film moved through production--and added vivid battle scenes including flamethrowers and tanks, that were nowhere in the novel.

The apparent differences between the novel and the film were the characters. In the film, Hearn was wounded, not killed as he was in the book. The flashbacks featuring Hearn also sharply contrasted his cavalier civilian playboy behavior with his serious consideration of moral issues.

The ill-fated Sergeant Croft, who it was explained, was driven by an overweening urge to command because of the memory of an unfaithful wife. From his actions in the film, however, one was led to think that he just liked killing.

Roth, the Jewish soldier who was accidentally killed on patrol. In the novel, Roth was drawn as an intellectual who is ambivalent about his Jewishness but is unable to escape anti-Semitism. The film portrayed the cruel anti-Semitism of Roth's fellow soldiers but ignored the complexities of his own personality.

Wilson, a hard-drinking country boy who died in the book (but made it through the movie). Among the major changes from the book to the film, the ending of the film was the most affirmative. In the book, the idealist "Hearn" was killed and the sadistic "Croft" survived. Norman Mailer showed a pessimistic view of humanity, but the film weakened it. The film caught neither the spirit nor the intent of the original yarn and became just another war picture.

Mailer was so disappointed that he filed suit against RKO Teleradio Pictures and Warner Bros in 1963, seeking reversion of all rights to "The Naked and the Dead". The suit was dismissed.

*The film review

"The Naked and the Dead" has resulted in a professionally but derivative action drama, which is no more memorable than similar sagas of strife that have preceded it. Director Raoul Walsh has filled the screen with striking vistas in beautiful color, the chilling sound and the fury of conflict, but the hearts, minds and motives of men exposed to sudden and often useless death, which gave the book its awesome power, serve merely as sketchy background to battle in this uneven picturization that was unveiled at the Capitol yesterday.

The film was come up with an aspect recounted by a platoon, doomed to decimation in securing a small island in the Pacific in 1943. The resentment, passions, brutalities and backgrounds of the men were stated and restated but were generally left with the impression of actors' speaking lines. Here we can see the platoon is in brief and personal outline. They are lonely in a terrible world they never made. They are afraid, they hate the jungle, their rugged assignments, themselves and each other. They recall their sweethearts and wives often. Some are lucky and do survive but others not. It was nearly always as simple as that.

Although the Sanders' dialog is plentiful but short of nuances, the platoon's stealthy trek, its skirmishes with Japanese patrols and the massive, climactic assault have been directed with the terrifying realism. It was a great war film. A viewer cannot help but recall scenes of the burning of enemy troops as the lush grass is ignited by the hidden G. I.'s; the deathly throes of a private bitten by a snake; the tension of the men as they try to scale a sheer cliff, the sounds and the look of the jungle, which have been beautifully captured in this color film. Director Walsh and his associates have carefully drawn an impressively stark face of war from "The Naked and the Dead" but only seldom do deeply dissect the people involved in it.

The praise of life and the shadow of death
17 August 2018
It is a lovely and sweet story which tells a beautiful ballerina mourning her lover's death at her youthful age. She was too sad to get away the great sorrow and opened her mind to a journalist who became into her lately lover. This film not only tells the wonderful memories and the praise of life but also faces the shadow of death. I like their performance and the narrative of intertwining the romantic moment and the tragic event. Ingmar Bergman truly did a great movie at the beginning in 1950s, preceding the following masterpieces in the film history.

A simple way of viewing this film
9 August 2018
Which part I like mostly is the narrative toward the transformation from a human live to an omnipresent soul. I consider this film as two parts. The first part is Boonmee's crime in his life, and the second part is Boonmee's dream about his past lives. And I also want to point out one feature in the ending scene. That is the interpretation of soul.

And it all begins with some basic questions: Though Boonmee said he was a little afraid of his kidney disease at the beginning, he soon acted naturally when he saw his wife's ghost appearing in front of him, including seeing Jen's furry son. At first I felt odd because they didn't show any fear to these super-natural beings except a very few surprise. Why weren't they scared or terrified? Why was it so acceptable to Boonmee and Jen? Was that because the female ghost and the monkey ghost were their close lovers? Those questions point out that there is one religious perspective formed by these villagers, and that is their worshiping to souls. They believe in the truth that souls actually exist and affect themselves, so they don't feel fearful when they see their invisible lover gradually appearing or a zoomorphic son suddenly coming back.

(1) Boonmee's crime in his life

I think the subjective viewpoint toward life from Boonmee is one soul can be circulated in everywhere so they own their past lives and afterlife. Quite like Buddhism. And Buddhism emphasizes the power of "Karma". That idea may explain why Jen's son warned Boonmee that every soul/spirit came to take him when he passed away. Because Boonmee had killed many communists and pests in the field, the lives killed by him became the ghosts and came to him for revenge. It means Boonmee has to take the fault he had made in his current life, even though he may stand at the right side to declare somewhat of justice in a historically perspective.

(2) Boonmee's dream about his past lives

And the another part is Bonnmee had a dream that the sad Princess who came into the water gave herself to the God. In my understanding, she might be one of Boonmee's past lives. This scene precedes Boonmee and his companies went to the wild jungle and the ghastly cave for purpose of searching the place he had lived. It means Boonmee may feel nostalgia and want to build the relationship with his past memories before his life ends.

(Feature) The interpretation of soul

Most importantly, in the last scene, Jen and her companies look at their another sitting figure with a stunned face. It is true to say that they're looking at themselves who were sitting to watch television in the last moment. It is a perfect interpretation which means the power of the soul is widespread and simultaneous. It's beyond time and space, reaching an unimaginable dimention.

To me, this film can be viewed in such a simple way, combining with the local faith and the locals' awe to the deity which they worshiped. Just think twice and make sure it's not so obscure at all.

Hereditary (2018)
8/10
A good cult film
21 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you watch this film in a mood for "The Conjuring 2", you would be very upset. But if you watch this film in a mood for "The Killing of a Sacred Deer", you would obtain a lot pleasure.

It is so great to view this whole movie is surrounded by the dense atmosphere out of the mental pressure and the shadow of death. (And the acting is great. I like it so much.) Simple to say, grandma, mother and the beheaded dauther, which means the maternal side, are components in the blood line of Hereditary. Some details show that this family is set up to be sacrificed for Paimon and I think it can make sense. This movie also reveals the truth almost entirely so it's not hard to piece the mysterious hints at all.

I think many people were upset because they wanted to see full jumpscares and enjoyed in the feeling of being frightened or scared. But "Hereditary" is obviously not that kind of movie. It actually is not only a horror film but a CULT film totally. Just like "The VVitch"(2015 film), "The Ritual"(2016 film) and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer"(2017 film). Some cult films have ghosts, but "Hereditary" just has the inapparent ghosts and strange happenings that makes people feel stunned in an instant. The only thing this film mostly emphasizes is RITUAL. Rituals make everything reasonable in this film, including causing the schizophrenia and the multiple personality disorder. Even this film is the part of the ritual. (Hah) At last, it seems that the ritual ended in Paimon gets his body. Pagans achieve their victory. On the whole, I consider it is a horror cult film about pagan's honorable road in the modern times.

In the end, only one thing I must have to say: The biggest fault in this film is its special effect. It is a big fraction while watching. As I know, a few people laugh at mother's floating body and the following naked people in the ending scene. The laughter from audience in the theater makes all of it ridiculous. I don't mind people laughing, but I can't stand the special effect is too fake. Not real to make me feel horrible.

A microcosm of the human nature
4 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It's a media satire about a simple story which means a beautiful lady named Jeon Man-hee who is innocent is accused of dishonesty because of the selfish motives from others.

Jeon Man-hee is from South Korea, and so do the director So Wan-soo and his lover Nam Yang-hye. And Nam is Man-hee's ex-boss. Nam fired Man-hee because Man-hee once had a sexual relationship with So. This triangle relation had occured in Cannes, France. Soon there is a blonde lady taking photos with a Polaroid instant camera meeting them. This lady is Claire from Paris.

The appearance of Claire impacts them in a slow pace. From my view, I think Nam blames it all on Man-hee too much, and So is too chauvinistic to Man-hee. Man-hee is kind actually but people around her except Claire treat meanly to her. It's just a microcosm of the human nature under Claire's camera.

One Core Value: Love
4 June 2018
I think this film can stand for the situation of the LGBTs in the campus in 2017-2018. It also contains the multi-ethnic imagination to the students, including the white, the black and the Jewish etc. Though these political-correct elements act usually in our sight, they still convey one core value: Love. We can see Simon is born in a happy family and grows up ordinarily into a simple boy as we can encounter in the street. When he comes out, his family gives him the full LOVE to let him to be self-confident to face with everything. His teacher also gives him a hand. And his friends and classmates comes back to support him. Such a cute and youthful story. The whole film-making is not showy but plain. Some jokes lie in the common conversations and make people laugh out. The rhythm of this film is also just the right amount. That brings me so much laughter and pleasure while watching this film.

Seriously? Watching Prime Minister has sex with a sow?
23 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There is an abduction with a ridiculous condition by kidnapping the Princess Susannah of the United Kingdom. Seeing a big man with political power is forced to obey the kidnapper's sexsual demands that having sex with a sow. The Prime Minister himself and his aides held an important position and took on so much pressure in this urgent task. The whole society also expected them to do the rescue efforts. They were watching TV reports all the time. And this case was highly-spread by Youtube, Facebook ...etc. It was also deleted and banned from the government. It means the mass communication and the block from network use of the news are the prior problems to face with in this high-tech society. After the videos of one cut finger appeared and showed the finger might be Princess', people went mad instantly. The most denouncing statement in the public opinion was "Prime Minister would rather lose his prestige than sacrifice the Princess". This reprehension made the Royalty calls the Prime Minister in having sex with a sow in front of the online streaming camera for saving the Princess. And the Prime Minister followed. Though the kidnapper hanged himself the suicide and the Princess was released in collapse within half an hour before the online streaming began. (The kidnapper is such a crazy artist. Can this whole course seem to be a behavioral art operation ? But I guess this statement would be refuted surely.)

One year later, the Prime Minister seemed to bring back his enormous prestige, holding his wife's hand happily. But in private he had nothing to say to his wife. It's apparent that this kidnapping affects his family relationship extremely.

This episode has the great atmosphere and makes each paragraph sensational equally. It leads the audience to the climax successfully. But I think the describing to the turning point of the poll is too abrupt. Though I know the entire arranging is a totally mocking scene, somehow it's also weird, ridiculous and exaggerated after the sexual online streaming finishes. In addition, concerning the ending, I'm not so optimistic that the Prime Minister can well go back to the political arena. So I give this episode 9/10.

#kidnapping #abduction #politician #social network #mass communication #blocked from network use #High-Tech #Behavioral Arts

What a countryside graffiti !!
12 February 2018
I think Call Me By Your Name is a heartwarming film. It describes a youthful boy learns how to explore his sexual feeling to an elder guy. It all happens in the countryside in 1983 summer in Italy. In this process, he also dates with a girl and has a romantic relationship with her, soon they break up and become friends. It seems that the whole film is such a story of a try of a young bi.

I call this film "countryside graffiti", not a negative prank, but to show the atmosphere of the whole 2 hours. Every scene goes slowly but clearly. That clearness is what I praise for. When they call each other by their names on the bed, I think my sense comes to the climax as them.

Around a open-minded family and a lot of Archaeological knowledge, I like this simple story. Those background settings makes this film more interesting. Although it is not the 1st boy-love movie in my mind, it can still be added to my top 10 list.

In the end, Oliver calls back to Elio, telling him he's married. In that moment, the acting of the young Chalamet is very awesome. His sorrowful stare just like a spear piercing into my heart. So touched.

Evil Dead (2013)
8/10
Faces at different times
11 July 2016
The Evil Dead (1981) tells of a story that a crowd of young people come to a cabin and accidentally evoke the demons in the wood through 'Book of the Dead'. Actually to say, I love its tempo! The tight plot moves the tempo of this film forward so quickly, as if there are so many monstrous scenes bumping into my sight form every corner. Even every step the film characters take brings me the feeling that something evil is always watching every breath and every second. However, the tempo of the re-make Evil Dead (2013) is apparently slower than the original. But I think it is a great re-make version! Because the atmosphere of terror in the re-make is better than the original through the delicate camera movements and exquisite film set. In the plot, the cliché is not as simple as the original one. It has the new idea of some gore-spreading and slaughtering scenes. It is very creative. Only one thing I have to say is the impression of the faces in the film at different times. It seems that the makeup techniques and computer-generated images in 1981 are old-fashioned, but I think the possessed faces in the original is more horrible than the faces in the re-make. These faces in the original and the symptoms of the possessed people make me think of The Exorcist (1973). Maybe the horror films about the possessed at that time all do that alike makeup technique so that the faces are similar.
