The Black Dahlia (2006)
A loud but ultimately empty movie.
Bad soundtrack. Some good actors, but absolutely horrible acting across the board except for the Black Dahlia. A script that does everything not to draw you in the movie. Cheezy directing style, is it noir? Is it a joke? Painful cinematography. Awful timing. Annoying sound design, there is a re-occurring female breath that they use to transition here and there, lame, but ultimately the only thing that kept me interested (when is that next stupid breath coming???) But hey, I got my money back. And here I add another line cause IMDb wants me to. And another one! Don't go see that movie!! Read a book instead. Maybe "The Black Dahlia".
Four Brothers (2005)
Singleton redeems himself.
The beginning tells it all, the Paramount mountain engulfed in snow. The Motown soundtrack. This is not going to be your typical Hollywood action movie. This is raw shoot'em up urban action. Where the bad guys are really bad, and the good still bad. The characters are well drawn out and fun to watch. The laughs keep coming. If you're just in for the action, then the gripping action scenes will have you satisfied. And if you're a film nerd like myself, you'll appreciate the crisp cinematography and seamless editing. I can't believe this is the same Singleton director that just recently did the CG infested, cheesy "2 Fast 2 Furious". It seems like the only thing that survived off this bad spell is Tyrese's girlfriend, whose scenes are the most cliché and unnecessary ones. Still everything else is pure fun.
Y a-t-il un Français dans la salle? (1982)
Uncompromising auteur film.
One of Mocky's best films. But which aren't? You can see his style, his touch, his independence in the first frames. He's the sort of filmmaker that never compromises, never bows down to morality. No wonder for someone that calls himself an amoral moralist. This film is a little heavy to get involved in, but once you're immersed in this surreal, or more real than real world, the film really gets you. The acting is terrific. The ending is perfect. Go see it with an open mind. And if you can find his DVD collection, get it, support this low budget, uncompromising film auteur! He's still shooting film at a rate of 1 every 2 years.
