Dirty John (2018–2020)
6/10
Hated the ending
15 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this series right up until I saw the last episode. The acting by everyone except the 2 playing the daughters was great. They were so unlikable they were annoying. I especially couldn't stand the older daughter and if anyone deserved to die it was her. There were some annoying problems with the plot. Debbie was married 4 times so where were the 4 husbands? Who were the father or fathers of all her kids & were they full or half siblings? Why did you only see her son once but nephew several times? Shout out to Kevin Zeggers playing the nephew though he was great. Where was Debbies father? I don't recall him being mentioned at all but I loved her mom she was so sweet and unbelievably forgiving considering what happened to her other daughter by the crazy son in law. What really bugged me was the ending. C'mon as if a little girl could do all that to a strong grown man. I can't believe the John character would do something that stupid anyhow it just didn't fit with the story. The ending was so poorly written. John was dark and a little evil but not a killer. I can't believe Eric Bana (who worked behind the scenes also) agreed to film such a pathetic death scene. And the daughter escaping justice after such a brutal attack is typical of the double standard in the justice system. If a boy savagely did this to someone he wouldn't get off with a slap on the wrist. It would have been more satisfying if John had just died of an overdose.

The Prodigy (2019)

Recommended if you like suspense/horror
11 February 2019
I saw this movie opening night and was satisfied with it. The acting was really good for this type of movie and music/score was creepy. I didn't find it scary but there was a few jump scares (not overused like some here claim) and a lot of tense moments. Story was fairly predictable but with a twist and a unexpected ending. I want to know what that infamous scene was that was edited or reshot that is mentioned here? Apparently the test audience said it was so terrifying the film maker had to either edit it or reshoot it. This scene was supposed to have been shown at the end of the original trailer but everything from both trailers was featured in this movie so unless it was removed from the trailer it doesn't seem to exist. Isn't the point of a horror movie to terrify people? The decision to remove it doesn't work to their advantage & not sure why this film got an R-rating. I hope this supposed scene shows up on the blu ray release or YouTube or somewhere. Or maybe it was all just fabricated by the filmmaker to get people into the theatre to watch this movie who knows. Either way I enjoyed this film and was happy seeing the new child's play trailer which looks good!

Slender Man (I) (2018)

Better than the bye bye man
10 August 2018
I thought the movie was good but not great. I like horror movies based on urban legends and wasn't familiar with slendernan, i thought it was just some kind of video game. I watched a few you tube videos on it and they seemed way different then this movie was but as a feature film of this genre I expected it to be more frightening and gory or something and don't understand why horror movies nowadays all have to be PG and are afraid to go really dark. It had good atmosphere and story was captivating enough but pace was slow and the scares were too tame and there were too many unanswered questions and plot holes. I still give it a 6 out of 10 because it was still a fun summer thriller and the acting was good.

Stay off the dark web
17 May 2018
I read somewhere horror movies are for the most part made cheap & producers take chances on unknown directors and actors but they have to get their start and it's usually in this genre. I knew nothing about this movie except for seeing the poster advertising it the day I saw avengers infinity war. I like horror films and learned it was filmed in the city I live in and was a feature length film based off the popular short film of the same title. I gave it a chance & don't understand all the hate for this movie and it's low rating. I enjoyed it and like the way it tries to bring a new horror idea into pop culture. The movie is mostly about a young woman who encounters a powerful force of evil while doing an internet search into the odd events that happened to her visiting cousin after taking a selfie for her YouTube channel. The movie was atmospheric with a lot of jump scares and well acted by the cast, but had a few plot holes so give it a 7 out of 10.

It delivered and was better than expected
17 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I really had a fun time watching this film and enjoyed it more then Thor Ragnarok which I saw the night before. It was a fun straight forward action film and even though it had 2 directors it mashed together OK. I am surprised by the low rating and urge people don't listen to so called critics ESPECIALLY rotten tomatoes. It started out slow but pace was good. The movie could have used 20 more minutes of just backstory footage of Cyborg, the Flash and Aquaman, all the others had their solo films. I enjoyed Ben Affleck as Batman again and Wonder Woman shines once more in this film. I am happy Superman figured in it somewhat early on and not just in a climatic ending scene. He's my favorite character and even though his reappearance wasn't what i was expecting it was satisfying. The score was good and I do agree with some of the criticism of this cut and hope Snyder's cut or an extended one of this one is released since so many of the best scenes in the trailers were left out. Also I wanna know if a black suit superman with long hair and beard was shot and just cut out because of re shoots since there were so many hints of it even Henry Cavill teased there would be so hoping it wasn't just a red-herring. Ray Fisher gave a really good performance but trailers showed clips i was expecting to see. I hope he gets a solo film i want to see him before becoming Cyborg. Ezra Miller was good as the Flash except for some minor dialogue where it sort of disrespects the character of Barry Allen. Jason Momoa isn't my favorite actor and i found him the most miscast mainly because he isn't the quintessential Aquaman with the blonde hair. The blonde hair is iconic and a few streaks in his dark hair do nothing and Marvel did it better with Thor. It was nice briefly seeing the supporting cast return i really Like Diane Lane and liked J.K. Simmons as commissioner Gordon. Oddly Perry White was absent and I was expecting to see Willem Dafoe. Critics said the CGI was bad with Cavill but I never noticed it in the first viewing and if it wasn't pointed out so much i probably wouldn't have. True Steppenwolf could have been a bit more vicious and didn't meet expectations of many but he got the job done and i didn't find him as weak as they were saying i mean you wanna talk about weak villains the MCU has some of the weakest Disney style ones that i've ever seen, but i don't follow all the comic book stuff. Justice League was a very fun movie i loved it! I want to see it again in IMAX next and am giving a 9 out of 10 only because of the edits (extended vers. will be better) & over use of comedy. Superman's return was my favorite part of the movie and most anticipated and did not disappoint he owned this movie!

I think it's the best sequel
13 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure whether this movie was supposed to be a sequel or reboot but it was way better then that horrible movie with Ryan Reynolds from 2005 and all the other cheesy sequels like Amityville: the evil escapes, dollhouse, curse, it's about time, a new generation etc. To me the awakening felt like a good sequel to the original trilogy. It reminded me a little of part 2 the possession, just not as brutal and I liked the realism in the story when they watched the original Amityville horror DVD in the actual house (at least in the the movies) where the horror took place.

The score was done really well and I liked the spooky feel and atmosphere of this film which worked well without the B-rated acting and cheap low budget special effects a lot of the sequels suffered from.

All the actors in this movie did a good job making the characters feel real. Cameron Monaghan did an amazing job being possessed it was creepy. My issue with this movie was the cuts and some scenes in the trailers not shown, and in 1 scene there seemed to be a bad edit while they take James outside in his wheelchair. I wanted to know what the dialogue was before it was cut out during the conversation.

I hope the director will eventually release an extended R-rated cut on DVD/blu ray with the deleted scenes and the original ending before the re- shoots. I would have preferred watching it on the big screen for my 1st time to get the full effect and can't believe after waiting 2 years it didn't get a wide theatrical release considering some of the other crap out there that did. This one deserved it & I don't know why so many people didn't like it. It was short but paced well I wasn't bored. If it does end up in my local theatre on Oct 28th i will go.

Worth a watch if your a fan of this genre
15 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A fairly good film for January (dump month). It's sort of a cross between candyman & slender man. There was a lot of stuff shown in the beginning of the trailer not shown in the movie which was disappointing so hopefully an extended cut will be released to blu ray/DVD. I am surprised how low the rating is on here for this film, it really isn't all that bad. Could have been better though if it had more frightening & graphic scenes and if the story was explored a bit more. Going from an R-rating to PG-13 is never good.

Douglas Smith (who played Elliot) gave a really good performance as did Michael Truccoand who played his older brother. I didn't even recognize Leigh Whannell lol. Carrie-Anne Moss was also good in her brief role as the detective. If a sequel is planned I hope she returns. I now wanna read this urban legend story that this film was based on about this immortal serial killer. I'd recommend this movie if your a fan of this genre but go see it without expectations.

better then Awakening
13 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie way better then the last one. A lot of action and a good twist to the story involving the vampires. The main issue I had (this part is a spoiler so don't read it if you haven't seen it) is the Killing off of the Michael character. The last movie led up to his return so it was a real let down and not believable the way he died. This was badly written and a lazy & disrespectful way to remove a lead character. Holding him captive by Marius or not including him at all in this chapter would have been better. He needed to be part of this entire series. I like Kate obviously but she can't carry the whole movie. There needs to be a strong male protagonist especially with so many of the good original characters gone. The David character is OK but too young & doesn't have the same chemistry with Selene that Michael had played by Scott Speedman. It makes no sense not to include him, and the series has suffered with his absence. He needs to be brought back in some aspect for the next final movie, even if its just newly filmed flashback scenes with Eve to finish it off!

Shut In (I) (2016)
4/10
It had so much potential :(
27 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was excited to see this movie because I love these types of thrillers but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. It was described as being a edge of your seat thriller about the ghost of a boy who dies in this woman's care that returns to haunt her. Well it started out good but the 2nd & 3rd act was so weak & badly written and horribly acted I was shaking my head in disbelief. There were so many good possibilities of where the writer could have taken this story it was frustrating. This next part of my review spoils the plot a little. Killing off virtually all the men was offensive especially one particular character. You don't actually even see him get killed you just see his dead body which is absurd. It was not realistic that a man like that could be overpowered by some skinny kid. He seemed to have a very important role throughout most of this movie and at the very least damn well should have lived. It would have been a better ending if he saved this woman instead. It really makes me wonder if the female producer & female writer of this silly film are a bunch of angry feminists. Ridiculous plot and equally stupid motive for what the teenager did with no point or purpose. Even Naomi Watts couldn't save this train wreck of a movie & she's the reason I wanted to go see it!

Return of Superman! The box-office grand slam the studio wanted
15 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw MOS in IMAX 3d a night before the official opening and really enjoyed it.I am going to see it again in 2d soon because I didn't think the 3d looked all that great since it was converted to this format instead of being filmed in it.

It was fairly well told without the campy humour of the original ones.It began nicely with the planet Krypton story before its destruction and ultimately sending baby superman by spaceship to earth.I loved this movies epic special effects and (way too long) action scenes. It was a bit of an overkill I agree, but so damn entertaining & fun to watch.I do have a few complaints.First I think there should have been more scenes of his younger years since it was an origin story. It really would have been nice to see his younger years played out in a strictly chronological style instead of rushed flashback scenes. The scenes with the Pete Ross character were rushed and there was practically no interaction or scenes with him or Lana Lang as teenagers.A scene missing that I strongly feel should have been included was baby Kal-El being discovered by the Kents when the spaceship crash lands in their field.Their reaction to it all and the lengths they took to keep his secret identity would have been nice to watch.I can't believe it was left out.Instead all you see is his spaceship landing and then they jump awkwardly to his life as a bearded drifter. Maybe some viewers would find it boring and want to skip right to the action, but I enjoy good storytelling and the 2 actors that played young Clark & Kevin Costner and Diane Lane should have had more screen time. Towards the end of the movie it was referenced how Zod and the other villains escaped the Phantom Zone. This should have been shown as well.Even if it was just a flashback scene while Zod was explaining to Kal El/Clark how he inadvertently freed them when he was a boy.

The score wasn't bad but no where near as good as other movies i've seen.It seemed to really miss melodic and emotional riffs during certain scenes which was unfortunate because in the official trailer #2 there was an awesome song called "elegy" heard playing. It is by Lisa Gerrard & Patrick Cassidy from their album "immortal memory".Sadly it wasn't featured in the film or on the man of steel soundtrack.

And the final complaint was the (possible) gender swap of the Jimmy Olsen character.I thought for sure and even hoped the "Jenny" character would have been killed off by either Faora or Zod, and that at the end of the movie in the final scene at the daily planet the character Jimmy appears as her brother when Clark is introduced to Perry and Lois. That is how I would have liked to see the movie end anyhow. I really liked this final scene though when Clark put on the glasses. It was a very satisfying ending for me and I am so excited for all the sequels.I am looking forward to seeing how they will explain how the city of Metropolis was re-built so quick after the intense destruction of it since they jumped right to his starting at the daily planet so quickly.

I am absolutely convinced now that Henry Cavill was the perfect choice of actor as the new superman.Whether you liked or hated his performance he was exactly right for the grittier hero and truly embodies the character.I am certain he will be even better in the sequels.I equally enjoyed Michael Shannon as the villain Zod.Antje Traue was very good in her role as Faora. And Amy Adams was good also but could have been a little more feisty. But they will surely develop her character more in the sequel.

Superman is super cool again thanks to Man of Steel and this is why I gave an 8 out of 10 rating.

Not as good as 30 days of night but OK!
29 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with another persons comment on here asking was this supposed to be a comedy? I thought Sam Raimi did an amazing job with 30 days of night. It was dark and scary. This new one was comical and way over the top.It was entertaining though. It had it's jump out of your seat moments but I did not find anything about it scary. It started out with a typical unexplained set of events just to open the movie then goes to present day. I liked how the characters were introduced and found the scene at the bank quite amusing.I hated the scene where the poor little kitten got sacrificed, this was unnecessary. And then the dumb ass remark later on about how one of the characters hated cats yet had one as a pet.Whoever put that crap in this script obviously hates cats! This stupidity is why I gave it a 6 out of 10. Alison Lohman who plays Christine was good in the beginning but then after the cat was killed she got on my nerves. She started lying to her boyfriend about everything and acting really stupid like a complete nutcase offering no explanation to all the weird sh*t that was happening to her and all around her.I don't think she was a good choice for this movie in a leading role. Her acting was horrible and I found myself feeling no sympathy at all for her character.I think the movie would have worked way better if Justin Long was in the lead role as the one that worked at the bank and had been cursed instead, and Alison playing the smaller role as his girlfriend.Even though Justin's role was smaller,he was 10 times better and could have easily pulled it off. As for the plot i've seen this all before so it's nothing new,but it was not the worst movie i've seen!

Good movie, it was everything I hoped it would be!
28 March 2009
I saw the documentary on the discovery channel and to be honest was thinking the whole thing was fake just like the hype (and hoax)of the Amityville horror 3 decades earlier.Whether it was real, imagined or fake the movie was very enjoyable from start to finish. The movie was set in the late 80's and this was portrayed well.It started out with a brief history of the house and then got started at a nice pace introducing the characters.

A family takes possession of a home only to find that something else has already done so.The house is a too-good-to-be-true rental property just a stone's throw from the hospital where young Matt Campbell is being treated for cancer. The movie sets up the possibility that everything is just in Matt's head because his experimental cancer drugs list "creepy hallucinations" as potential side effects.Things get interesting when Matt, his cousin and a reverend uncover the house's evil history.

Virginia Madsen gave a solid performance playing "the mother",and Kyle Gallner as "Matt" was equally as good! The actors playing the siblings & the cousin were good & believable. But my least favorite was Martin Donovon playing "the father".He just had no personality. What really made me angry was how he acted at the end of the movie. He didn't seem to care that his son miraculously survived a terrifying ordeal,he just stood there like it was nothing not even hugging him or acting like he gave a sh*t! I don't know if this is the fault of the director or the actor for being so cold and pathetic. It just seemed everyone else was so close knit. The Reverend Popescu character was more like a father to Matt and genuinely cared what was happening to him & the family. But for all I know maybe in real life the 2 of them had a bad relationship. This is the only reason I gave the movie a 9 instead of a 10.Otherwise it was an excellent movie!

The Unborn (2009)
8/10
Not as bad as people are saying. My expectations were met!
27 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I saw the trailer for the unborn surprisingly only once considering one person commented it got way over played.I had nothing to do tonight so I went to check it out.I read a lot of bad reviews on IMDb so I was expecting to be disappointed.I actually found it very entertaining, but then I like these type of movies. There were obvious flaws but it was far from the worst movie i've seen.I know nothing about Jewish folklore so don't know how accurate this movie was.Even if there is no truth to it I still found it interesting. In a way it was the same old story again but with a different angle. It reminded me of a cross between the omen (2006 vers.) and the Exorcism of Emily Rose.I liked the back story about the cruel experiments during the 2nd world war by the Nazi's.It gave the movie a nice twist and some depth instead of happening for no reason like in a lot of other movies. One scene I thought was over the top and unnecessary was the scene of the old man doing the spider walk.It was copied directly from the exorcist. The possession of him would have been enough without adding that lousy scene. It even got a few unintentional chuckles. The movie moved along quickly but the pace didn't seem rushed until the climax. The exorcism should have been longer and more violent. It seemed to end too easily, and I didn't like it when the Apostolic Priest was invaded by the entity. It would have been more effective if he and the Rabbi fought harder against the demon kid and had the girl Casey suffer more as well. Like I said the movie has its faults but I did enjoy it and liked the ending! If a sequel is planned,I hope it won't be a typical str8 to DVD comedy.

Not a bad film, but should have been about 3 Canadian snowboarders instead (like they actually were)
11 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The movie opens with a naked bum(homeless man) running through the woods scared out of his mind being chased by something. And then there is a party scene which was a bit unnecessary. It should have started out with the 3 thirty something snow boarder guys on the road after the naked guy and bypass all the stuff from the stupid party. But it was just an excuse to show more T&A.And what was with making the 3 guys from Jersey? And even supplying them with a car with an American flag and New Jersey plates. I could tell right away none of those unknown actors were American. They totally sounded Canadian! The only one who could pass was Steve Warren who played the hilarious and nutty Ivan character, but I think Steve was the only American actor in this indie film. What pisses me off about a lot of Canadian cinema (especially this one) is that they are never based in Canada. This is an insult because we have large well known cities, small towns and backwoods etc,so this movie could have easily been based in the Province it was filmed. However I think there was one real shot of Colorado which was nice, so a better way to do it would have been to make the 3 snowboarders Canadians traveling through America instead which is what they obviously were! I don't think it would have hurt the film at all,in fact would have made it more believable. I don't get what it is with Canadian film makers! This was my main issue about this movie otherwise it was interesting and I started to get into it after the party scene. It seemed more like a satire then a horror movie.I just found everything about it amusing. The gore was good and disturbing at times. The most disgusting scene to me was when they stopped at a redneck diner and what the cook did to their food.I nearly got sick! I did sit through the whole movie without turning it off so I guess it wasn't all bad.

Good movie, kept me glued to my seat!
26 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I never read any of the books that this movie was based on and to be honest wasn't really aware of them. But once I heard it was being made I was interested in finding out more about it. I read different things about this film and even read the original screen play was nothing like the book and fans and maybe even the author wasn't happy about that. Then read the script was re written and closer to the novel. Since i never read it or was that familiar with it I was able to watch it for what it was. And what I saw I liked! I was impressed. At first when Edward fled the school for a few days because he was put off by her for some odd reason after seeing Bella I was thinking it was a little pathetic. But again I never read the book so I accepted it and was captivated by what was gonna happen next. As the story picked up and the characters were all introduced it got interesting and kept me glued to the screen. There were a few characters at the school who annoyed me but when the Cullens came on the scene it got good, especially the handsome & sexy Edward(Robert Pattinson).I thought Kristen and Robert played the parts of Bella & Edward very well. They were convincing in their feelings for each other, especially Kristen.I really felt her subtle fear of him and strong attraction for him and how she was afraid to lose him.Even though I never read the book I get what it is basically about. It's about a girl falling in love with a hot guy who was dark, mysterious & sparkly but who turns out to be a vampire! He hides who he really is but she figures it out.And while they are figuring out how to be together the vampire was attracted to the scent of her blood, and having a real hard time restraining himself from killing her. And this is exactly what the movie portrays.I also enjoyed all the other characters and stories like the feud between the 2 groups of vampires, and the American Indian mythology. I am looking forward to seeing the sequels and am interested now in reading the books.

Mirrors (I) (2008)

mirror mirror on the wall, nearly the worst one of all!
20 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing the (misleading) trailer for this movie I really anticipated seeing it and thought for sure I would love it.Man was I wrong! It started out good until the stupid storyline about the 12 year old girl who in the early 50s was thought to be schizophrenic, but was possessed or something stupid like that which we have seen so many times it has really gotten old.I am disappointed that the producer & writer would write something that lame into such a promising new script. It went from a good spooky & atmospheric thriller with nice visual and good special effects in the first half, to downright laughable and pathetic in the last half when the story about the possessed girl who later becomes a nun came into it.This part of it made no sense. There was absolutely no reason for the possession at all.Like other people said,it would have been better to not have an explanation about what's in the mirrors and leave it ambiguous. But since the writer had to add a reason it would have been better to make the possessed 12 year old a boy instead of a girl so it didn't come across as yet another exorcist "ripp-off! When I read about this movie in various articles I thought it was going to be mainly focused on Ben Carson (played by Keifer Sutherland) and his troubled past.Other than his drinking there really wasn't a past. There was some bad dialog but Keifer Sutherland was pretty convincing and did a good job.I thought the movie would be more along the lines of the reflections in the mirror showing the ugly sides of themselves and making them do bad things to the people around them and their loved ones. There wasn't a lot of chemistry between Keifer's character and his wife & 2 kids, and the roles were badly cast. Also Amy Smart at first came across like she was his girlfriend instead of his sister. There really were not a lot of characters in the film to begin with, but if the film focused more on character development instead of adding the asylum and later exorcism, then it could have been an awesome psychological horror movie. The movie should have gone deeper inside the mirrors. The burnt & abandoned department store looked extremely creepy, and the scariest moments in the film were of being all alone with only a flashlight in that huge evil place and all the mirrors. There was enough tension & fear about that alone and all the victims that were burned to death to make a better plot. This movie is based on a Korean movie called "into the mirror",which was typically another Asian horror movie about a murdered female who's vengeful spirit wants justice.I read director Alexandre Aja didn't connect with the Korean film because everything was seen before in the ring & grudge etc.Well now that I have seen "mirrors", it is still nothing new especially because of the direction it took in the last half.I really wanted to like this movie and strongly believed he could deliver a horrifying movie after seeing the incredible remake of "the hills have eyes", and the brilliant "hight tension".I was very disappointed because of the potential the story had. The ending was a bit of a twist, but it ended just as the movie got interesting again which was maddening! Unfortunately I won't be adding this to my movie collection, but Alexandre has made some great horror movies and I have no doubt his next film will be a success!

The Happening (2008)

A very ticked-off mother nature!
16 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I usually never listen to what critics say because they bitch about everything and will always find fault with every movie in some way. I never go to a movie with high expectations anyways.I will admit this movie didn't have the greatest script but it did have some nice visuals and some disturbing and creepy scenes. One scene that creep ed me out was when the one group of people trying to escape came across a bunch of dead bodies hanging off telephone pulls or trees or something like that.It was so startling because it seemed so real, and the loud sudden eerie background music made you jump. I didn't like the b-rated sounding score in the first part of the film,it was horrible. The acting by most was OK but not great. Zooey Deschanel who played Alma Moore was awful! She was very stale and showed no emotion or reaction to anything and was very uninteresting. She is the reason I can't give this movie a higher rating. She had no chemistry with any of the other actors, and at times seemed like she couldn't deliver her lines.Just because she was born into a show biz family doesn't mean she has any talent,it just means she has an advantage.Mark Wahlberg who played her husband Elliot and Ashlyn Sanchez who played the little girl Jess were great, and they worked well together. The scene with Betty Buckley as the crazy old woman was a little strange but added excitement. And her demise was very unexpected. As for the plot, there were some that thought the Government was involved in what happened to the North East section of the U.S. in the movie while others thought the villain was an angry Mother Nature who decides to wreak havoc on large groups of humans by spreading a deadly plant toxin that makes people commit suicide whenever the wind shifts. The story may be a bit over the top and not very believable, but it was a fun movie for me to watch. It reminded me of a long episode of the Twilight Zone.

Great movie, but similar plot to the French film "them"
31 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to see this movie ever since seeing the trailer more then a year ago.I don't know why it took so long to be released and what the delay was, but it was worth the wait.I like Scott Speedman from seeing him in previous films and he was a good choice for the lead. And Liv Tyler was also a good choice for the other lead. They seemed to be playing an unhappy and awkward couple which fit right in with the dark atmosphere and depressing mood of it.The suspense built gradually which gave plenty of time to develop the characters nicely and then it became a terrifying experience for the couple just prior to them trying to patch up some of their problems.A 4:am knock at their door startles them and the tension builds from there. It is a very claustrophobic film and the director of it knows exactly what to do with the dark.It is supposed to be based on true events, but I am pretty sure it was just an American remake of a very similar French movie called "Ils"(Them)with almost the same plot which was also based on a true story that happened to an Austrian couple. Both these movies were about a senseless and brutal home invasion of a couple in a country home in the woods by 3 youths. In the French version you couldn't really see the hooded youths stalking the couple in the dark which was a bit more terrifying. It was a twisted psychological attack. You could hear the horrifying sounds they made hiding in the shadows but couldn't really see them.In the strangers, 2 of the attackers wore these cheesy masks and the other one was wearing some kind of hood which was more spooky, but they were sometimes visible which was more realistic. The only part I hated was the way the movie ended implying Kristen maybe survives and then you don't know what happens next. It's a typical American ending where the female character always lives. Both victims should have just died like in the real story, or they both should have survived it.I hope there is at least an alternate ending for the DVD. Other then the way it abruptly ends I liked it.It is a good thriller with good acting and was very well directed.

Interesting ,disturbing and convincing
13 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I first heard about this film by reading a very brief description in a magazine about new DVD releases. The cover art was captivating and dark.At first I thought it was a ghost story or some other type of horror movie before I realized it was a psychological drama. I especially liked Leo Bells acting playing a very mentally challenged young man.He moves in a unique way because of the characters mental state. The super fast motion of the son off his medication gave me an adrenalin rush.It was effective but hard on the eyes.It was a nice contrast to all the other characters in their normal state moving slowly through life.It seemed very isolated and lonely in that big mansion and I could see why the father needed a break from it all and left. Also convincing was Kate Fahy playing the disabled mother. The movie had it's share of confusing moments. Just when you think it's over it starts over and you are not sure if what happened actually did or if it was a dream or delusion. One minute the wife is confined to a bed and the next she is playing caregiver to James. And at times it's hard to tell whether it's James who is ill or his father Donald as it flashes between 2 different reality's.Or it is years later and an aging Donald is remembering his past.I will have to watch it again to try and figure it out better.

Prom Night (I) (2008)
I don't know how this was even aloud to be released it's so horrible!
13 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I am so glad I won a free ticket to see this boring, lame movie which my friend thought was a comedy.I now think it is the worst attempt at a remake. The whole idea and plot is stupid. The acting atrocious.I kept shaking my head thinking how could it get any worse after each laughable scene that was painful to watch since I really liked the original with Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen. At least the killer of the original had a motive and reason to kill. Also his identity was hidden until the very end which made it fun to guess who it could have been.In this hatchet job and embarrassment to the original movie, you see the killer right away and there is no mystery and a not very believable reason for killing with absolutely no character development, just a very quick & lame flashback scene. This is nothing more than just a movie of the week type of thriller with bad dialog. If it was written like the original prom night but updated for this generation , had an R rating and was directed by someone else it may have worked better. I didn't like anything about this film.I hated it and did not like even one of the characters. Every single character should have all been butchered viciously, especially the Brittany Snow character and the surviving black guy. If I had to pay for this piece of s**t,I would have demanded a refund! The only people that may like this juvenile film are 12-14 year old's only!

One intense holiday! A good movie
8 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie. It was one of the better horror movies i've seen.It had an original plot with good acting and an easy on the eyes cast of main characters. It surprised me and sucked that the Jeff character(Jonathan Tucker) was killed. It surprised me that the writer would do that after enduring so much to stay alive.I hope an alternative ending was filmed for the DVD! He was my favorite character in the film and felt he really carried the film.I think since he died in it,then they all should have died! Or at least had 2 survivors instead of the "typical" female character always surviving at the end. The movie had a somewhat believable plot with a fair share of gore and some interesting and tense moments in that remote jungle. The ending implied a sequel may be in the works. If so I hope the same people who made this one do it also. I am interested in reading Scott Smith's novel of the same name this movie was based on ,and want to see the movie again! With all these damn horror remakes,it was nice to see something good that was refreshing and original

Storm Warning (2007)
9/10
The calm before the storm
27 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I knew nothing about this movie and never even heard of it before seeing the trailer but couldn't wait to see it.I love all types of horror and suspense movies, and especially like watching Mother Nature's fireworks, and Australia seems to have it's fair share of electrical storms. This movie was very well acted and one of the more realistic ones i've seen in awhile. It was brutal and nerve racking because it could have easily happened.I really loved the first part of this movie.Everything at first seemed so ordinary and normal for this couple before the dark clouds rolled in.I really enjoyed the quiet, peaceful nice sounds of nature in the background as they were canoeing the lake or swamp .It reminded me of one of the solitudes cd's by Dan Gibson, very peaceful! I love lakes and the water in general. And then the weather changes and the storm approached calmly and slowly at first and then the 2 of them realize they are lost. Then the movie provides a very isolating and uneasy feeling as they stumble on to strange events during a pounding thunder, lightning and rain storm that seems to go on for hours. They then seek shelter at a farm and then all hell breaks loose! They then fight hard for their lives right up until the climatic conclusion! This movie is an awesome thriller with superb acting. It is very atmospheric and is never a dull moment.I will watch it again and do recommend it.

The Orphanage (2007)

One of the best foreign films i've seen
28 January 2008
I just saw this movie tonight and really enjoyed it.Like someone else said,it was like a good old fashion ghost story. It did have spooky moments that's for sure but I wouldn't call it a horror movie.A thriller yes.I did notice the audience jumped a few times during the movie

It was beautifully acted and had a nice dark and Gothic look and feel to it. I loved the sea and the lighthouse, and the isolation really worked well with this type of film.It was a good movie experience with a satisfying and eerie ending.

It had an interesting storyline with a mysterious past and some parts make you think. This is a movie I could easily watch again and I do recommend it.

Whisper (I) (2007)
9/10
Good movie! Could almost be a sequel to the 2006 Omen remake
2 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I saw a trailer for this movie months before it's DVD release and remember reading stuff about it but not knowing all the details so I couldn't wait to see it.It would have been nice to have caught it in theater's for it's limited release. The original movie poster for "whisper" was nice, with a picture of a house behind trees and David sitting in the snow beside a dead and bloody crow with a caption "the devil's work is child's play".I really liked that original poster for the movie and hoped it would be the cover for the DVD as well. But instead we get a cheap looking cover with a new caption. For the DVD they should have gone with the alternate title "Hellion" instead which would be appropriate for this new cover art and the movie. As for the movie itself,I liked it and it was better then I thought it would be.It has good solid acting and an original idea.It would have made a great Omen sequel since Damien was orphaned at the end and he would have gone to another family anyway and raised hell! His name could have been changed after his adoption.....But Whisper is is a good movie on it's own.And after seeing it I understand the title of the movie. Before I watched it I had an idea about the plot.I knew a young boy was kidnapped and was held hostage by 4 kidnappers and unknown to them the boy wasn't as innocent as they thought. He had a way of tapping into their minds and turning them against one another.I anxiously wanted to see it to see how an 8 year old could outsmart them.I started thinking about another movie I saw called "hard candy" where a young conniving girl managed to use her mind to turn against the pedophile she was stalking. Well after watching it I realized they were 2 completely different movies and that "Whisper" was more like the Omen and that David was actually something from Hell.Well indeed he did get even with the ones that kidnapped him and hatched a diabolical plan to carefully destroy them one by one! I think one of the reasons this movie works is because of the evil background music and seriousness of it rather than being b-rated or movie of the week like.Blake Woodruff did a very good and convincing portrayal of this not so innocent boy. The one problem I had was the beginning seemed rushed and there was a very quick line about David's father dying and him being adopted and all of his nannies dying mysteriously. This was quite confusing because it doesn't really explain where he came from and how he became what he was.At least in the Omen there is a back story and Damien had an origin, but with David it's a mystery.I think this could have been explored better. And after seeing the alternate ending,I have to say I prefer it better because you can't kill that type of evil. How can an ordinary guy like Max(Josh Holloway)defeat David's powers so easily where his associates couldn't! Whoever decided on the ending was wrong. The alternate ending is more satisfying and just fits better with the whole story. And another thing to,those extended scenes were better and more detailed & the first 2 deleted scenes should have stayed in the movie also for continuity and to make things a little less confusing. It is a shame that there isn't an option on a DVD to add the extended & deleted scenes back into the movie, and pick the ending you prefer.I really like this movie but felt nothing should have been cut out,and the alternate ending should have been used!

The Mist (2007)
9/10
Left me feeling drained it was so good!
28 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
My favorite movie this year was undoubtedly 30 days of night until I saw The mist.30 days is hard to top,but the mist ties with it. When I say it drained me,I meant emotionally, and I felt every emotion sitting through this it was so powerful.I know it was only a movie and different people get out of it different things but according to the audience tonight (and it's already been showing for more than a week) no one was disappointed. There was one scene towards the end when a lot of people clapped because an annoying character was shot. She was asking for it believe me,but the way she was written was annoying and she could have been written better or different.I'm not sure if Stephen King intended the Mrs. Carmody character (played by Marcia Gay Harden) to be the way she was written for the movie because i have not read the book but she was a way over the top religious fanatic. The dialog was stupid as hell.It was a very negative portrayal of Christianity. This is the only reason I gave this movie a 9 out of 10. However I loved this film from the start. It started out peacefully with a family living by a lake and a storm hits. The tension builds slowly the way i like it so you get to know the characters and nothing is rushed. There was everything in this type of movie I would expect.A tiny bit of comedy (which didn't hurt it) a believable plot, suspense, drama,a little aggravation at a few characters,high-tension among the characters out of fear, and creepy but breathtaking special effects that made the movie that much more believable and realistic.Thomas Jane as David, and Laurie Holden as Amanda were amazing! Of course everyone else was great too, but Thomas Jane especially carried the whole movie. The scenes between him and the others were very well acted. The scene where he had to leave his little son Billy (Nathan Gamble) was sad and very moving. It was a fun movie filled with thrills and intense suspense and had a typical Stephen King movie type ending, but with a disturbing twist.I sure hope there is an alternate ending for the DVD.This one was well the money and seeing on the big screen!
