Get Out (2017)
Really well made
Really well made. It's 'horror', but more in a Hitchcock-ian way, as opposed to the grotesque or supernatural types of horror that I hate. Writing and acting were excellent.
I might have rated it 8 or 9, but for two things. First, the sense of impending doom and violence takes away from the enjoyability factor for me. Second, there's extremely little to be learned from this film morally or intellectually. It's just a sick, amoral family, their circle of amoral friends, and a young man who falls into their trap and manages to get out.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Pointed and intelligent
Engaging film with a very clear point. The story very effectively puts the lie to the all-too-common attitude that drunk sex is consensual sex, or is enough in the grey area to give the benefit of the doubt to the guy.
For the most part the movie is very well written, acted, and directed. I expected it to go in a more graphic or visceral direction with the sex scenes and with the revenge plot, but I was grateful it did not. Cassie's revenge is very feminine; her approach is very psychological and social. Her final confrontation, although again not too graphic, is *extremely* intense.
A lot about the film is entertaining, seeing Cassie's intelligence at work and also seeing her relationship with Ryan evolve. But the whole premise is very sad, not just because of Cassie and Nina's experiences, but because of how realistic they are.
Well worth watching.
Un cuento chino (2011)
Realistically and thoughtfully absurd
Thoroughly enjoyable film with just the right touches of humor and drama. Brilliantly written and well acted.
La vendedora de fósforos (2017)
Interesting, half-playful, half-serious art film.
Interesting, half-playful, half-serious art film. Well acted and enjoyable to watch, but also a bit confusing and un-punctuated.
