Last Night in Soho (2021)
An era of awakening becomes an expressionist horror painting
An aesthetically flawless film with a fantastic soundtrack:
Whether genres, times, realities or identities - in this film, director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns convincingly mix the most diverse narrative levels and skillfully play with the audience's expectations. And up until the incredibly gripping showdown, the film always keeps a surprising twist up its sleeve. As a horror thriller, the film lays important narrative tracks right from the start, which one follows with excitement and curiosity.
The impressive camerawork by Chung-hoon Chung and a lighting and color dramaturgy that has been thought through down to the smallest symbolically charged image make both the London of today and the London of the legendary Swinging Sixties shine and appear in a stirring manner.
Only the one or other too stereotypical side character and the somewhat rushed ending tarnish the aesthetically flawless overall picture.
Typical for Edgar Wright is the outstandingly composed soundtrack, which brings the Swinging Sixties to life. And far from all pop cultural and cinematic references, the film additionally tells the highly topical story of women in show business.

In praise of friendship
If you like the crude comedies by Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen ("Superbad") as well as the "Hangover" trilogy, you'll be right at home with "Catch Me! Only sometimes is the positive overall impression marred: When even topics like torture and miscarriage suddenly find their way into the film in macabre jokes, you have to swallow hard - despite the (self-)ironic note. Nevertheless: "Catch Me!" is a successful prankster piece with a lot of irony, great music ("Sound Of Da Police!"), funny ideas and the heart in the right place.
