Matteo Lane: Hair Plugs & Heartache (2023)
Flawless
I found Matteo on YouTube while surfing for standup and I am now a hopeless junkie of his comedy. He is a born entertainer. From start to finish I was laughing and hanging on his every word. His delivery is on point, his crowd work is brilliant, and he has a hilarious mixture of bitchy diva and down-to-earth friendliness that makes his performances genuine and entertaining. He is very open about his sexuality and if you are easily offended by mature topics or uncomfortable with homosexuality, then maybe give this a miss instead of ranting and complaining about it after the fact. This is pure GOLD and I can't wait to see more from him. Go check him out on YouTube and help him get more exposure. The world needs to know about Matteo!
Message Man (2018)
This is definitely worth watching.
This was a really good movie. For something that would probably be classified in the low-budget B-grade category, this was a nice surprise. I like that it is set in Indonesia, where it shows the poverty and real-life dangers of the area, like the ruthless pirates who terrorize the island, plundering and ripping young women from their families to abuse and sell to the highest bidder.
Although it may start out slow, stick with it because in act 2 and 3 the movie takes on a whole new persona as the retired assassins past brutal expertise kicks back into action. He kills fast and ruthlessly, leaving a trail of bodies behind him. It might be a little brutal for the squeamish, but the theme of doing what is right completely justifies the violence and I loved every minute of it watching the pirates get what's coming to them. It's a wild ride and I would definitely like to see more from this director. Highly recommend.
I'm Totally Fine (2022)
It has a weird comfort to it.
Delivered in an unusual way, the reconnection of a grieving woman to her late best friend was at the same time emotional and endearingly amusing. Vanessa and Jennifer seemed like an unusual friendship - one cautious and uptight and one wild and carefree. Touching on real themes like fear, regret, resentment and acceptance, it covers all these with depth and humour. Natalie Morales nailed Jennifer's awkward character - from her sentence construction, monotone alien delivery and the hilarious antics she got up to. I could have watched it for longer just to enjoy her performance. Loved it. Worth a watch.
Palmer (2021)
Hits you in the heart
I've watched it 3 times now and it gives me the feels every single time. This film is so moving and honest. The characters are well written and perfectly cast and they climb into your heart right away. It'll make your face leak. For anyone who claims Justin Timberlake is just a pretty boy who can't act, this performance proves them wrong. Highly recommend.
Rhys Nicholson: Live at the Athenaeum (2020)
Rhys delivers!
I haven't laughed this much in ages. He had me hanging on every word. Both charming and bitchy in his own unique way, he was a winning formula. I hope he keeps them coming.
Dad Stop Embarrassing Me (2021)
Oh hell no!
This is so unbelievably bad. To call it a dumpster fire would be an insult to flaming piles of trash. I cannot believe Jamie Foxx, he of Oscar fame, is producing such garbage. His over-exaggerated acting is cringe worthy and not funny at all - just irritating. How did this even get made? Come on Jamie, you're better than this.
How to Make Money Selling Drugs (2012)
Eye opening.
This documentary blew me away. I was gripped from the moment I pushed play. It opens you up to a world you could never have imagined. It's well written, filmed and researched and drops some surprising and disturbing truth bombs. If you've ever judged a drug user or drug dealer in the past, this will change your mind. Immediately.
She's in Portland (2020)
A good watch.
This is not a comedy so it has been wrongly categorised, but I really loved this movie. Very relatable characters, beautiful cinematography and a plot that many of us can relate to. Perhaps a younger audience might not appreciate it as much since they haven't got the life experiences that these guys have which make them relatable to the over 30's in the audience. Definitely worth a watch.
How It Ends (2018)
So frustrated!
I'm only giving this a 3 simply because there was some good suspense here and there, but other than that this movie was a huge, and I mean gargantuan waste of my time. Essentially something bad happens and then...road trip. That's it. Road trip! No explanation about what happened, no narrative, no progression, no ending at all. It's like the makers woke up one morning and thought "how can we piss off people today?" I think they were just trolling us with the title How it ends. Good question, because there is no @&%#! ending!!!
Zone blanche: The Shadow and the Preys (2019)
This. Was. So. Good!
Found it on my recommended list and thought what the hell, let's see what it's all about. Wound up bingeing the entire series. If it weren't for the annoyance of bathroom breaks, I never left my sofa. It draws you in and grabs hold of you. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the eerieness and unnerving atmosphere of the location and storyline had me glued to my screen. I truly hope there will be more to come.
Extinction (2018)
A slow start, but then... OMFG!
When it started, I was waiting for something to happen, thinking it was going to be "one of those" movies, where they never get to the point. But once it did, it had me gripped and I couldn't look away. I absolutely love movies that give me that extra OMFG! This film delivered exactly that. Really enjoyed it.
Dark Web (2017)
Don't. Just...don't.
If I ever turned into a sociopath and wanted to slowly torture someone, I'd make them watch this. I kept waiting for something "dark webby" to happen, but now I've lost 1h12m that I can never get back.
The Northlander (2016)
What the hell did I just watch?
Seriously. I have no clue what this movie was about. There is no narrative or explanations as to what is going on, how they got there, what their goal is. Nothing made sense. The characters were undeveloped and bland and most of their activities were pointless to the outcome of the movie - whatever that was supposed to be - pretty much running around a forest and desert with random fight scenes here and there and an emotionless, rather forced romance thrown in for good measure. I was determined to make it to the end but I could feel the IQ points draining out of my brain. Don't waste your time.
It Comes at Night (2017)
What did I just watch?
I got sucked in by the title but I don't know what it has to do with the film. Expecting something evil haunting the woods? Psycho killers? Supernatural whatnots, but nothing. Nada. Zip.
The storyline was the run of the mill mass illness wipes out population saga, but the addition of the other characters and continuation of the story has absolutely no connection to the title whatsoever. If you're looking for horror - don't waste your time.
What comes at night? WHAT????
