This Is Christmas (2022)
Feel good at it's best
Wonderful festive tale with a strong cast, good characters and storyline. The film gives a feel good factor that is absolutely ideal for the festive season. Timothy Spall never fails to, not only act well in any film he does, but pick those roles that are part of a great script, he certainly has carried that on in this movie.
Ok yes, some of the plot can be predicted early on but this doesn't alter the fact that it's a good storyline that will make the time fly by and leave you with a warm positive feeling inside.
Well worth watching with your loved one or indeed when having a night to yourself.
Pinocchio (2022)
Passes the time but that's it
Not the greatest remake but it does entertain. Big issue I had is that I'm not sure why Disney felt the need to put a sweat word in a children's film, I hope that's not a new trend they keep.
Main gripes are that I don't actually think Pinocchio does anything wrong except lie that one time and it's a very disjointed movie. Tom Hanks, while a decent performance, is often very quiet and mumbling so was a case of whacking up the volume a fair bit in the early stages of the film. Oh and be prepared for some slight changes to the story which weren't really that necessary like changing the Whale to be a sea monster.
On the positive side as I've said it does pass the time, some good comedy in it, decent cast of a healthy mix of bigger names and relatively lesser known actors. Watch it and make up your own view, some will love it, some won't.
Worth a watch the once but try not to compare it to Disney's classic.
Invasion Planet Earth (2019)
Sci fi back to basics and loving it
First and foremost, after watching the documentary on the dvd about the making of this film, absolute full credit to Simon Cox for even getting this film made. Determination and hard work has got this great, low to no buget, part crowdfunded film to our dvd shelves and download platforms. A real inspiration.
Ok now the film itself? I loved it! From start to finish this it's true sci fi, back to what it does best, entertain us. Don't expect the best effects ever but do expect good solid ones that are absolutely amazing given the budget that the production team had to work with. All too often films are centred around the CGI technology available in Hollywood, Invasion Planet Earth is a good solid, well written film that I recommend any SF lover and aspiring film makers buy now and just watch 92 minutes of pure enjoyment.
Buying this film also helps support an up and coming film maker with a great future in film it seems. I must say that maybe the Doctor Who team could do with getting Simon to write for their future series? I look forward to more like this.
Mi chao (2018)
Awful and painful
Very poor script which does little for the actors' credentials. A story we've seen before countless times if different forms.
On the plus side it's short and you can always switch it off.
