Mean Girls (2024)
Too cool to be a musical, not cool enough to be a remake
The marketing of this movie was atrocious, it was misleading so people assumed it was a remake, which backfired because no one wanted a remake, they would much rather have a sequel to the original.
The movie tries to steer away from being a full musical, altering or removing songs that made the broadway show so catchy and fun.
It's like the classic movie trope where the girl who wants to be cool is suddenly ashamed of its nerdy friends, the musical being the nerdy friend in this scenario.
"A revenge party" seemed to be the big musical number of the movie, we didn't even get a decent closing song, so the ending fell flat.
I will be singing along to some of the songs but overall I feel like it did not deliver.
House of Villains (2023)
A show that will be talked about for years.
This is "The Sopranos" of reality tv, even if we only get a season of this show it will be referenced and quoted for years to come.
I watched with a grin from ear to ear a show that is not afraid to let its flaws show, giving us an inside and sometimes raw look into what goes on behind the scenes of making reality television.
Most of the cast played to win and if not they were there to play the "villain" role they have been assigned.
The competitions were equitable, where anyone could win at any point which also contributed to the fluidity of power, and by definition created the drama that is sought in such a show like this.
Any reality show out there should be looking at this show and learn from it.
If you dismiss reality tv as dumb or vapid or exploitative this show isn't gonna change your mind, stay on your high horse because I will be praying for a season 2 of House of Villains and I will be seated.
Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
The people who are angry about this being a reality show shouldn't be allowed to vote.
The show was marketed as a real life Squid Game, a competition reality show where a bunch of strangers would compete in challenges inspired from the original show. It's extremely fun to see these people compete in these challenges we got to know from the original show but also the social strategy behind it is very interesting.
Reality tv does not equal "dumb" broaden your horizons because reality tv can be just as good or dumb as scripted tv, and no Squid Games is not a "10" but it also doesn't deserve a 1 from people who couldn't be bothered to use google or watch a preview or read the description of the show before they started watching it.
Some interesting characters that are being highlighted are fun root for and against. Not sure how it will all end but after episode 2 I'm excited to see what comes next.
My Best Friend's Exorcism (2022)
Read the book instead
Above all the book is about the friendship between the two main characters and how they're willing to never give up on each other despite tremendous circumstances.
There's none of that here, at times you wonder how these two even became friends or what they have in common, they also took some liberties and completely changed the story of one of the characters, which all seem to be one dimensional and belong more in a show like Riverdale.
It was extremely disappointing to see the direction they went with this film, the story was there but instead they decided to focus on cheap jump scares and gross imagery.
This movie is past its PRIME.
Better Call Saul: Saul Gone (2022)
A Half Measure
They went the easy route, Jimmy would've found a way out of this situation just like he always has, with a mix of luck, charm and intelligence. This was not the Jimmy we've known, defeated, somehow feeling guilt after all this time, very uncharacteristic, not impressed.
The Rehearsal (2022)
"Odd, hard to watch, awkward"
These are all adjectives that have been used to describe this show. I can tell you they are all true and if you're familiar with Nathan Fielder then you know what you're getting into. I have been a fan of his work for such a long time it feels like since 1789 the same year the French Revolution started.
Give it a chance, enjoy the unique show that this is, and go along with the ride. You'll like where you end up.
American Crime Story: Exiles (2021)
A great setup for what's to come.
A slow but very engaging start to a season filled with interesting characters, I'm not all too familiar with the Clinton scandal but I am definitely interested after this first episode. Can't wait for more.
High School Musical: The Musical - The Series (2019)
Off to a good start!
It reminds me of the first couple seasons of Glee, the female lead is forgettable so far. But the other characters make up for it. It's a teen drama that's not as cheesy as you'd expect. I'm excited to see more!
