Mutant Chronicles gave me a pleasant surprise
30 July 2008
I didn't expect much when I saw the title, the name mutant in the title is never a good sign, but I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was really great, being a historian I really enjoyed the weird mix of Great War, cyberpunk and post-WWII United States. Reminded me of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, just not that shiny. The feeling of hopelessness and despair was clearly visible. The characters were typical, no big thumbs up for this one, but not shallow. People who watch movies for the little things like the tone of blood and the color of guts might be disappointed, but for an average movie-goer like me, who goes to the movies for entertainment, not slaughterhouse atmosphere, the special effects were nice. For everyone who still hasn't seen it, the atmosphere is the key in this movie.

Not the greatest movie ever, but still enjoyable
19 December 2007
Uwe Boll is by no means the best director of our times, no, but still, the movie is watchable. And, I must admit, he has really progressed lately. You can't really expect something genius from a game-movie. And, before every game lover in the countryside starts yelling about how interesting the storyline of the game was, let's remember that the main attraction of the game was a half-naked vampire chick, and that's as deep as it goes. All in all, it's just drooling over a 3d model with double D's. (Same goes for Tomb Raider) Both Bloodrayne movies are much the same - hot chicks in tight clothing, sometimes smeared with blood, sometimes with no clothing. So - no deep thoughts and philosophy here either. Otherwise it's just adventuring, fighting, cheesy dialogue, cheesy acting. In my opinion, it's what you expect of an evening entertainment movie.

Supernatural (2005–2020)
10/10
One of the best shows of 2005
11 October 2005
I never was a big fan of X-Files or such so, when the show was first aired I thought it would be another X-File ripoff with the only difference that characters are not called Mulder and Scully, but I was pleasantly surprised. And, seeing the other new shows that just started airing like "Invasion", "Surface" or Threshold" this one is totally genius (if they can keep it up, of course). The way both main characters are drawn in the fight against supernatural is a bit cliché, but still believable. The refreshing moment is that there is no secret government organization(secret society whatsoever) that has been working in shadows for centuries, fighting against evils unknown to mankind (at first it was nice, but nowadays almost every mystery/sci-fi movie has it so it has become boring) it's just two brothers in their own personal war against supernatural. So, if they can keep the classic secret society, super smart mentor and girls in underwear exploring dark cellars out of this show it's going to be one of my favorites for some time.

Overrated propaganda flick.
7 September 2005
I'm not from US and maybe that's why I don't get overexcited with movies that show GI's as Superman/Mother Theresa crossbreeds that protect the weak and fight the evil. A mediocre propaganda flick with some good actors and a weak script, nothing exciting, can't even remember any particular scenes that are worth it. Though Hollywood has done it again, we have a new propaganda war movie in theaters that is about to become a classic the same way all overrated propaganda movies (Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, Black Hawk Down etc.) do. I'm no saying that The Great Raid is a bad movie or anything, it's watchable, but don't expect too much of it. The only pleasant surprise was to see that Hollywood has remembered that a war movie isn't all about shooting, dying and screaming in pain, though they have a very long way to go back to the level of the movies they made in sixties and seventies.

The Bunker (2001)

Definitely worth watching. Warning ***Spoilers***
31 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I want to state that this movie was terribly underrated (comparing to similar movies). Dog soldiers was awful, Deathwatch too.

The movie is and in the same time is not about war. There is no Axis vs. Allies action you would want to see in a movie bout WWII. But it is about soldiers and their feelings about war and their fate.

The main concept of this movie is not to show the zombies (there are no zombies or any other monsters), but to show the fragile human mind that builds it's own monsters and dangers, based on the babbling of an old grief maddened soldier and a local legend. The soldiers just picture the local legends with their own fears and voilà everything comes to life (not literally).

Everyone who has been to a real war or talked to people who have knows, that the most fearful moment for a soldier is waiting not knowing what's coming up next. It's much more scary than any battle and that is what this movie shows. It shows the elite soldiers breaking up because they know that they are followed, surrounded and have no hope of surrender.

What I liked the most of this movie was the thing that there are no monsters involved, just a local legend, a crazed old man and the inner fears of soldiers.

Another remake - another failure.
5 January 2005
The last year was a year of remakes - exorcist, phantom of the opera, dawn of the dead etc. and they have one thing in common they failed. Of course it's always very hard to recreate the atmosphere of the original and balance between making the whole movie scary because of the feeling of hopelessness and loneliness the main characters feel or by showing zombies that look like a bad parody on clowns (terrible makeup etc).

The original movie was quite nice for a zombie movie it had the atmosphere that was scary by itself and even the synthetic looking zombies couldn't spoil the fun. The remake lacks this atmosphere, the zombies look and act more like drunkards after a bar brawl rather than scary undead monsters that are hungry for human flesh.

My suggestion - watch the original movie.

Conclusion - don't waste your time, it's not worth it.
5 January 2005
This movie has only one serious drawback - it lack everything that could make it interesting and unique. It is a moralization about family relationships(father-son, boyfriend-girlfriend) and it could be quite OK, cause people come to see human relationships in the movies, but in this case it's too cliché. The special effects are OK, but special effects alone don't make a movie good. The script is weak, even more - if you have seen any catastrophe movies like Dante's peek, Twister etc. you have already seen Day after tomorrow. I was seriously disappointed by this movie cause at first it seemed to be like a post-apocalyptic drama, but turned out to be just a catastrophic script. And for those who think that bad script can be saved by good acting - the acting is weak too, the dying people look like they are dying from boredom not terrible catastrophe. The leading actors act either too shy or overact and it makes the movie even worse.

Effects are no better than in the 80ties.
31 August 2004
I like horror movies, but I'm really getting annoyed by the eternal darkness in them. I understand why it was necessary in old movies, the effect quality was so weak, that there was no other way how to hide the glitches. But today is 21st century. Even low budged movies have better graphics. Predators looked like jamaicans with masks. Looks like the graphic effects team was very much "inspired" by Chewbacca from the Star Wars. Aliens looked the same way they looked in the first Alien movie. Only the plot was quite OK, though none of the "specialists" acted as a professional would. No archaeologist would run around pushing and opening everything he finds. And so on. CONCLUSION Better watch the first three parts of Alien and both Predators, but don't waste your time on this one. The idea of combining Alien and Predator universes was good for a computer game, but not for a movie.
