Ice Dreams (2009 TV Movie)

Bland but cute
5 March 2011
Because I'm a sucker for all things ice skating, I ended up watching this.

The whole beginning part annoyed me, especially the part with Amy whining and running away from this really cute guy - older for her, but cute. Then she gave him attitude for trying to get her back into ice skating - what a cad!!! It was trite and cute, nothing new to see here.

Anyway, it's a nice little story for a Saturday morning.

The ice skating was OK, but why was Amy trying to impress the guy with a single? That doesn't make sense. And the couples scene on ice was so predictable.

Dull & Clichéd
31 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
There is only one reason for Kevin Smith making this moving and it was at the end: "In Memory of Pop Smith." So I will cut Kevin Smith a little slack because it's an "ode" movie. Otherwise, it really hasn't much redeeming qualities, and if you've seen any other schmaltzy movie (Doc Hollywood, for example) then you know how the ending is going to work.

Um...there isn't too much else to say about it. George Carlin was underused as always and the MESSAGE was loud and clear. Don't ever have a life just because you have a kid. Never have any ambitions just because you have a kid; Just because you live in New Jersey means you can never work in New York City.

Gertie also drove me crazy. I admit that I don't have kids, but still. Ollie is the adult. He makes the decisions. Gertie was the exact replica of JLo, right down to the head shaking.

It's not fair to compare this film to Kevin's other film, but it could have been so much better, including dialogue (when older Gertie went to the hospital and general substance.

Better than the Step Up?
28 August 2008
I don't know about that...but it had its own edge and the dancing was, as they say, SICK.

Premise: Tyler's (Channing Tatum from Step Up in a cameo)foster sister has grown up and her mother has died leaving her with her mother's friend to raise. Andie runs the streets with the 410 (dance) crew and constantly gets into trouble and could be shipped off to Texas...oh, no!! Tyler gets her an audition at his alma mater the Maryland School for the Arts and fish-out-of-water-clashes ensue.

As I like to say, the movie has heart and that counts for a lot. Plus, the dancing is sick. They definitely know how to take a basic girl-meets-guy-but-can't-be-together plot and make it work even if it's pretty standard stuff.

The best was seeing Jabbawokeez, winners of he first "season" of America's Best Dance Crew.

An epic dance crew competition started from this movie on YouTube between Miley Cyrus and her friend and Adam Sevani who played Moose. Just for that, it's a pop culture phenomenon.

Good Saturday Night Movie
30 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This film obviously isn't out to change the world, but it will make a Saturday evening pass OK.

I liked the different viewpoints of the characters - Forrest Whitaker being my least favorite. A little too earnest. William Hurt isn't one of my favorite actors, but he was OK here as a "nice" president who wants to Do The Right Thing. He was a bit too good.

The plot progression during the various viewpoints was a good way to show this fairly rote thriller. The baddies were bad, and the good guys were ultra good. No room for in-between here. There could have been more character development but with so much ground to cover (literally) there wasn't time.

My biggest gripe is that the car chase at the end was twice as long as the part that was supposed to be going on at the same time was taking. Not to mention the straining of disbelief that Harrison Ford, oops, Kiefer Sutherland, oops Dennis Quaid survives a massive car crash, but another person is fatally injured in his.

Like my title says, it's great for a Saturday night out with friends and it kept me awake, which I can't say for The Simpsonss' Movie or One Missed Call. I feel like I got my $10 worth at the theater.

This movie is BONAFIDE
29 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The Coen's are excellent at regional movies and letting their characters find their own voice. This one speaks and sings volumes.

From beginning to end, this is my favorite Coen brother movie with Fargo so very close behind. George Clooney is perfect as huckster with a hear Ulysses Everett McGill who leads his merry band of chain gang members through Depression-era Mississippi breaking down racial lines and galloping through the countryside meeting celebrities such as George "Baby Face" Nelson.

After convincing his chain gang mates that he has a treasure hidden away they become targets for sirens, bible salesmen, and KKK members.

Charles Durning, John Goodman, Holly Hunter (who I actually like here) as McGill's long-suffering ex-wife, and more join in.

The soundtrack is just as wonderful on its own as it is in the movie.

Remember: Keep on the sunny side of life.

No shortage of thinking and Action
21 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. This held my attention the whole two hours.

First of all, I love the horses. Duh. He's realizing what he's become and what his law firm has been mixed up in. He wanted to do a good job, but sold his soul to pay for other peoples'. The horses are innocent and don't judge him like others do (such as all of his family, friends, and associates except his son).

I haven't seen Syriana, Good Night, and Good Luck, etc., but George Clooney's performance here is impeccable. Tom Wilkinson & Tilda Swinton are masterful as well.

Is it going to be "legally" perfect? No. That's not what it's about. I love the very ending the best.

Incredible Experience!!!!
24 February 2008
First off, I'm not a huge fan, but really love their early 80s stuff such as Sunday, Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day, etc. My husband is a huge fan and likes the newer music. This blended both and although he wished a few more obscure songs such as "Exit" overall it was great! You can't have everything! I've seen Harry Potter in IMAX 3D and had the reaching out experience and thought I'd be so cool about it, but I did want to reach out and touch Bono/The Edge on several occasions. I also wanted to join in singing/dancing, but it wasn't to be, but my head did bob in time with the music. The camera work was incredible and seeing the monstrous stadium mad me appreciate the smaller ones here in the States! Bono was a little preachy, but that's sort of to be expected Every group needs a 3D movie! I can think of a few to start...

The Departed (2006)

Above average, but not the best
5 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I had to decided whether this was a 6 or 7 and gave it a 7 out of pity.

First off, I haven't seen Infernal Affairs so I can't comment about the other movie, but if the other comments on the board are any indication, it was probably the better more complex movie.

Yes, it's Scorcese, but this was definitely not his best work, which has to go to either Raging Bull or Mean Streets, even Goodfellas. He deserved the Oscar for those, but not this. Just for time alone, it was too bloated and way too much Jack going nuts.

Leo & Matt's performances were top-notch and each were perfect for the part, but thought their absolutes were annoying. I felt, however, that Johnny Depp was better in the same type of role as Costigan as Donny Brasco. I never got the whole reason why Wahlberg's character hated Sullivan so much.

Vera Famiglia was lame as the shared love interest. I never felt any of her attraction for Sullivan. She also just didn't strike me that she would jeopardize her relationship with Sullivan for a roll in the hay with Costigan.

I am glad that Scorcese won an Oscar, but he was still robbed for not getting it for a better movie.

If you're going to a Scorcese movie be ready for lots of swearing and blood. It's just a given. Actually, I barely heard any swearing." The accents bothered me since everyone had the same one and that just wasn't realistic.
