Glória (2021)
I really, really tried to watch this.
I really tried to watch this show-it has many of the aspects of stories that I like-cold war, spies and drama.
Unfortunately, this could be used in a filmmaking class for an example of how not to edit scenes. The filmmaker seems unable to let a scene run-every time a different character speaks, the camera jumps to an over-the shoulder shot. Again, and again and again every viewpoint changes at an average of just a few seconds. After a few minutes of this, one finds themselves wanting to yell at the screen "stop cutting so much!".
Perhaps there is a good story there, but, in the end, the amateurish editing renders this almost unwatchable.
What a shame.
Level (2021)
Boring rehash of oft-debunked material
This tiresome pseudo-documentary simply repeats the list of poor arguments that flat Earth proponents have been putting forth for years.
Nothing new or particularly interesting here-don't waste your time.
Newman (2015)
Interesting portrayal of an unusual man, but incomplete as a story.
Joseph Newman is often portrayed as a kind of poster child for the struggle of the "outsider" vs. The scientific establishment and in this oddly unbalanced documentary, that idea is generally supported..right up until the final 30 minutes or so, when a kind of big reveal occurs. I won't spoil it, but to really understand what's really going on here you must watch the last 30 minutes of the film!
With that said, I think that a much better and more balanced documentary could be made of this man's life and the role and responsibility that media has in reporting what are ofttimes delusional or outright fraudulent claims.
Hunt for the Skinwalker (2018)
This is pseudo documentary filmmaking at its worst.
If you are looking for interesting content and a coherent narrative about events that have been claimed to occur in and around the Skinwalker Ranch and Uintah Basin area, don't bother with this film.
Punctuated with some truly uninspired philosophical ramblings, the film mostly consists of stereotypical "somebody saw something somewhere" UFO nonsense and vague insinuations of some great mystery that, of course, is never revealed.
The narrator seems more interested presenting freshman level philosophical monologues than actually investigating anything.
I rarely rate documentaries this poorly, but this one is a complete waste of time.
Utopia (2020)
Somewhat entertaining premise ruined by lackluster writing.
Characterized by unlikable characters and an off-balance story, but what sticks out the most is the mean spirited tone of the writing. The premise of the story should be interesting-unfortunately the sullen and unrelatable characters are so poorly written that the series never manages to climb above mediocre.
