Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence (2023)
Ignore the 2 star reviews
Those reviewing this documentary because they don't like the story are idiots. It's a TRUE STORY!! They didn't make it up. It has shocking audio and video of a lot of the very disturbing parts of the story. It is a cult. They cut off family, gave all there money to him, commited crimes for him and treated him like a God. Using sleep deprivation and withholding food to assert control. They are all main parts of cults like Scientology, people's temple and the recent nixium cult.
The harsh criticism that they could just leave is easy to say when you're not in that situation. No one joins a cult on purpose. That's the point of it. The human condition of conditioning is fascinating, complex and mysterious. Decades of examples all over the world. Why does it happen so often. This documentary really goes into great depth to show the before, during and after the mind control they endured. It's frightening and disturbing. But also an utter compelling story.
The Sandman (2022)
Fantastic
If you want TV shows that just consist off all straight white men then you might not like it. If you want something that's a mixture of real, authentic with fantasy then give it a go. It's really worth it. Fantastic cast with a unique storyline.
Men (2022)
Unique
Utterly remarkable! Beautiful, disturbing and haunting. It's an experience. Oscar worthy performance from Rory kinear. A very decent horror movie. Lots to think about and process. A24 knock it out of the park yet again.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Must read
Save yourself 10 hours of your life and don't watch this nonsense. If you love star trek TNG then absolutely don't watch this. Season one was a good start. 2nd season is an insult to star trek and sci-fi. Terrible story, terrible writing, unneeded political commentary and a wasted opportunity. Massive disappointment.
The Night House (2020)
Truly creepy
Horror movie of the year. Some very clever creepy moments. The story is fleshed out at a perfect pace. You can't rush the reveal and they don't. Rebecca Hall is fantastic in the lead role. Broken by unspeakable grief and then thrown into a complex mystery. Soundtrack is really decent. Supporting cast are very good also. The ending is quite brilliant. Me and my girlfriend had a long chat about what it all means. You can judge for yourselves. Its not all explained too you like a child. It treats you with respect that you can think for yourself. A movie that treats you like an intelligent person. Highly highly recommend this to anyone that wants a great psychological horror experience.
Night Teeth (2021)
Worst vampire movie every made
Neither protagonist or antagonist are even mildly entertaining or interesting. Every actor seems to be just reading lines without any effort. The soundtrack is awful. Great concept but horribly executed. Huge let down.
Modern Love: Strangers on a (Dublin) Train (2021)
Good but where is the rest
Loved it till it ended with no conclusion! I know they are based on real life stories, but at least add an actual ending.
The Green Knight (2021)
Ignore the haters
If you like to watch film that you have to interpret yourself then this is for you. If you like a movie that you don't need to pay much attention to and enjoy then it isn't. If you get bored easily when there isn't any action this isn't for you. If you go in thinking it's game of thrones and then complain that it's boring then go and see fast and the furious. If everything has to make sense then it won't be for you. 2001 had an ambitious and ambiguous ending that didn't make sense. It will divide opinion. It is different and I respect the courage to make something new. In this age of endless sequels and remakes, doing a unique film is appreciated. If you don't agree and are happy to see jumanji 5 then just don't go and see this and complain that it's boring.
Mainstream (2020)
Misunderstood movie
Those complaining about the personalities in the film are missing the point entirely. It's like complaining about Dr Strangelove because it's unrealistic or complaining about natural born killers because they aren't nice people. It's a satire about influencers and Instagram personalities. How ridiculous they are. They aren't going to likeable. That's the point. Garfield is brilliant. Soundtrack is very decent Have an open mind.
We Summon the Darkness (2019)
So bad!
Really really bad. Not in a good way at all. Just terrible!! The characters are super irritating.
The Devil Next Door (2019)
Heartbreaking
People complaining about the camps being in Poland are ridiculous. That's where they were! That's a fact. It doesn't say that the polish people made them for crying out loud. I have no clue what the problem is they are complaining about.
Heartbreaking testimony that's told in the courtroom. Hard to hear. Be prepared for harrowing details.
The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021)
Oscar worthy
Andra day deserves an Oscar for this performance. What a debut! It's a gritty and genuine portrayal of what happened. Sugar coating drug addiction and just concentrating on the music wouldn't do it justice. She deserved help not persecution. And it's very sad that this still goes on now. Criminalizing people who are genuinely struggling with drug abuse.
Soulmates (2020)
Intriguing concept
Black mirror inspired show that's more developed. Creates debate and discussion after watching it. Really good cast of actors, some that will have long careers and be nominated for Oscars.
Yesterday (2019)
Ruined by Sheeran
Love the Beatles tunes and the premise of the movie. Then Ed 'I can't act' at all walked in and ruined it all. Comparing Sheeran with the Beatles is like comparing eating ice cream and chewing on toenails. Don't care how popular that ginger specimen is the two should not be said in the same breathe!!
The Stand: The Circle Closes (2021)
Ruined
Ending ruined it completely. Was genuinely enjoying it in parts. Last episode was a waste of time. Shame
Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy (2021)
Heartbreaking
Ignore all the heartless reviews by whiney people who can't accept the truth. It's not bias it's facts. Watch kill the messenger about what happened and what the government did. Open your mind to the facts and don't just think it's Republican bashing. Both sides were to blame for the massive failure in the criminal justice system. History will look back on how we treated people with drug abuse and it won't be kind. Have some empathy and sympathy for these people. Decades of a complete lack of any responsibility to these folk. Decades of using and abusing them. The war on drugs has gone on forever and nothing has changed. This really does show how it devastated communities. And it's tragic and infuriating how racist it was. They turned a blind eye to them becoming addicted one minute and then were quick to lock them all up the next. It's the truth
The Stand (2020)
Ignore the hate
Wonderful cast and a decent take on the novel. Soundtrack is great. It's a slow burner, with good character development. If you're after easy pacing, watch the 90's version. They did a commendable job making it different. Each episode introduces a few characters with in depth excellent pacing. With patience it's a rewarding watch. Give it time..
The Newsroom (2012)
Perfect
The only criticism is that it only had 3 seasons!! The writing is impeccable. Aaron sorkin is a genius.
Utopia (2020)
WATCH THE ORIGINAL!!
If you're going to remake something, at least do it well. This is a very poorly written immitation of a classic TV show. All the actors that are chosen to replace the originals are 1000 times worse. All you do is eye roll every five minutes. Shame on every person that made this. If you have never seen the original, I beg you, never every watch this. Seek out the original and tell everyone who is thinking of watching this to do the same. Every single part of this is a terrible terrible copy of the original. The cast, the story, the music and the cinematography. Turn back now and watch the original
Perry Mason (2020)
Patience is a virtue
It will take time to get going, you can't judge a series on one or two episodes. What you can take from the first three episodes is that it looks beautiful, the war flashback scene is incredible and the cast is decent. It's based on the original books that was in the 30's! It's complex and has much more to come. If you can't wait for a plot to form go and watch CSI you impatient idiots!
Airplane II: The Sequel (1982)
It's a classic
Anyone giving it anything less than 8 has a severe lack of humor! Gold standard in spoof movies. Just don't take it so seriously.
The Lodge (2019)
Stupid
Majority of the film I really enjoyed. But then it just became really stupid. It made no sense whatsoever!
What the kids did to that poor woman was shocking! Basically it's a film where two kids push a woman into a psychotic break. That's not scary, it's annoying. I was happy with the very end. I cared more about the woman than the children. Which I really don't think was intended. And if it was, why!?
