The Proof Is Out There (2021)
Almost a great skeptical weird phenomena show...
So, I enjoy scientificly geared shows about strange events and phenomena... Ufo, Bigfoot etc. But this has a slight bias towards the truly wacky theories they barely need to present. Many "experts" are pretty good at explaining what's happening as normal, natural etc, but I'm not sure the show is really trying so hard to fully evaluate every video or photo. Maybe it's just me, but any history channel show that talks about ancient aliens before the reasonable archeological or anthropological explanations is filling up time or perpetuating Graham Hancock nonsense. Still a good way to find "urban legend" or famous alleged phenomena.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
Not as good as troll hunter
So, I didn't like his Pinocchio. And I didn't care much for several of these episodes. But with my love for troll hunter, I really wanted to.
Maybe I just watched fargo and expected period dramas to have a more compelling storyline. I agree that autopsy was the best episode (though it's pretty much stargate tv show meets the movie "fallen.") I also found del Toro's introductions difficult to understand. I mean he speaks English better than I speak Spanish, but he's acting as the rod serling or Alfred Hitchcock. Maybe it's the overuse of misphonogenic sound effects attempting to disgust the audience into titillation, or the overuse of lovecraftian tenticular otherworldliness, but it just wasn't my thing. I'd rather just watch midnight mass again. That's a great series.
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
Detective Spiderman
I liked the actors, the writing, and the plot. Detective brother Spiderman is fun, and there's no denying his buddy chemistry with Gil Birmingham (Bill). I also appreciated shedding light on some of the darker origins of what many people believe is a wonderful religion, and overall the contrast of the heathen viewpoint against Mormon viewpoint was effective and non judgemental. However, a few things bothered me. 1. Too many rapid flashbacks. I did like Mormon history mixed in with the regular story, but the quick flashes of scene images grows old. 2. Andrew Garfield cries too much... Maybe Mormons are like that but, I dunno. It's not a "men don't cry" comment. It's a "have more reactions please, detective, other than tears". 3. Bill and Jeb's extended interactions in the final episode. Maybe an epilogue would have been better re: crimial repercussions. I feel like they rehashed the same thing 5 ways. 4. That Jeb just decided to "fake it" as a Mormon rather than standing up for what he believed. I understand that he wanted to hold on to his family, but after that much of the hierarchy revealing their corruption and coercive tendencies I found it improbable for someone of his character to be that dishonest with himself. Maybe I'm just a spoiled American, but... Other than that, a very good and engaging murder mystery.
The Terminal List (2022)
Not an imdb 8+
I like Chris Pratt. I especially like funny Chris Pratt. The funny one wasn't in this series. I like war movies and war series, but not this one really. I don't really like overdone "dreamy sequences" where we can't tell what's real; especially if that's like half of every episode. I don't like bad (ignorant) neuroscience depictions in movies. Also, when the burn is so slow that it seems like the fuse might be out, it's time to move on. Also, an exploration of the "Charles Whitman" element of the scenario would have been awesome! Totally lost opportunity. Undeveloped characters, just, I'll end in sentence fragments.
Killer Cases (2020)
Disappointing
First of all, the diversity complaints are preposterous. Frankly I can't tell if they're doing satire or not. My problem is with the ongoing almost total absense of scientific evidence underscored in these cases. A & E can't help it if most people believe that interpretation of human reactions and body language is reasonable grounds for deciding guilt. They can help it if they choose to include that information as though it seals the deal. If you want to watch a show where the vast majority of cases are based on circumstantial evidence and unchallenged "mind reading" assertions from the people making important legal decisions, then this is the show for you.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Did this one have different writers.
Woke ideology infects some movies more than others. This was not as woke as captain Marvel, but it was more woke than most of the other DCU movies. Maybe it's a quirk of mine, but when a clear agenda is forced unnaturally into a plot, it suspends my suspension of disbelief. It's still entertaining, and I love 3D, so it gets a 7.
CIA: Crime Investigation Australia (2005)
Too much shrieking.
Well done true crime. But I shouldn't have to keep turning down the part with screams. I get it, okay... The victims fought tooth and nail and protested the entire time. I think they just dubbed in a horrific scream specialist repeatedly. Otherwise good.
