Battleship (2012)
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen at Sea
From Hasbro and the director of Transformers, comes another alien flick, in which these creatures from space declare war on a marine base. Now going into the movie, I was expecting something closer to the beautifully crafted Transformers trilogy (exception to Transformers Revenge of the Fallen), but I was sadly mistaken. Thinking of Brooklyn Decker and Rhianna as action heroes seemed a bit too much to grasp, along with a stupid script and mediocre special effects. Now I'll admit, there were some funny lines, but I was still disappointed. There is one really exciting sequence in which these robotic "wheels" destroy an entire battleship, but that's pretty much it. Even the video game trailer looked better then the film. Still mildly enjoyable, but more of a rent it kind of movie.
Prom Night (2008)
Underrated teen horror flick
A former teacher becomes obsessed with this high school girl, to the point of killing everyone she cared about, just to be with her. I almost stopped watching this movie, because it was slow and really boring for close to 45 minutes (just showing the prom and people dancing), but I'm glad I didn't. It got better. The farther along the movie went, it finally got interesting. This is the kind of movie that'd be considered as a teen slasher, with a high body count. This is some what scary and grotesque, without going over the top like in Friday the 13th or one of the Saw films. Pretty decent movie, with some legit scares and thrills, and OK storyline.
Total Recall (2012)
Horrible reboot with cool special effects, but bad acting
Colin Farrell stars as "Douglas Quaid" in this mediocre and very confusing action filled sci-fi flick. Without giving away vital pieces to this storyline, let me but quick and cut to the point, this movie is a "Total" mess. The storyline can be hard to follow, the characters don't seem very "realistic," but the one mildly good thing that can be said for this movie is the action/chase sequences. I'll admit, there are some exciting scenes in this movie, which doesn't make this movie a bomb, but it still doesn't make much of a difference. With a clearer storyline, this could've had potential as a great film in this solid year of movies in 2012.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Brilliant Acting+Brilliant Screenplay=Outstanding Film
Silver Linings Playbook
Based on the book by Matthew Quick, comes David O. Russell's (The Fighter) adaptation of his beloved novel. After a short time in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his equally insane parents (Philadelphia Eagles "Super Fans") and hopes to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more interesting when Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), an odd girl with some serious problems of her own. When Tiffany finds out that Pat is interested in giving a letter to his wife, she agrees to help him in return for a favor. As Pat and Tiffany's friendship grows, it seems that a silver lining starts to grow in each other's lives.
I found this movie to be funny, fascinating, and touching. It's an emotional powerhouse, that makes audiences want to stand up and cheer when things go right for Pat and Tiffany. You really can feel for the characters. That's how realistic the emotions portrayed seem to be. It's a film that can make you laugh and smile, feel upset and betrayed, or sad and filled with tears. An extremely satisfying movie, that'll continue to make noise at the box office and at the upcoming Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
Christine (1983)
Definitely original
From the Director that brought you "Halloween" and "The Thing," comes another horror movie that has some legit scares. "Christine" is about a bullied boy who falls in love with a possessed and extremely jealous car. The guy who buys "Christine," was always picked on, until he found one thing that was "uglier" than he was. He fixes up the car, and it gets him lots of friends and girls, but he neglects his parents, schoolwork, and eventually his best friend, because he finally learns what it's like to be popular. With a couple thrilling scenes, it doesn't live up to John Carpenter's two fore-mentioned films, but is still interesting to watch. It's definitely original.
My Week with Marilyn (2011)
A look at an American Icon
An interesting story on the set of a Marilyn Monroe movie and how one young man's life was changed forever.
Review: Michelle Williams gives an award worthy performance as her role as Marilyn Monroe. It was interesting getting a look at what this lady's life was like while on and off a movie set. She seemed to think that no one cared about her and everyone thought she was crazy. That might've been one of the reasons she died, due to depression. But whatever the case, I found this movie to be slow, but surprisingly enjoyable. I felt like I learned and got something out of this movie, and that was "Always tell people how much they are cared about, because sometimes you never know when they might leave you."
