Twentieth Century (1934)
Over-acted and under-written
About as far from a screwball comedy as you can get. The ham is thick and gristly, courtesy John Barrymore, who is sorely deficient in irony. Shouting replaces fast-paced dialogue and emotional depth. A few great character actors are lost in the shuffle. And Carole Lombard could have been better directed to dial down the volume and make more of her decent physical comic chops.
This movie suffers compared to other comedies of similar vintage, including The Front Page (1931), and flatter than Cukor vehicles like The Awful Truth. Even Hawks's own films like Bringing Up Baby surpass this mess.
The last 15 minutes might have made a respectable short, but it's really not worth the trouble.

Thought provoking and engaging
Really liked this engaging short. In very little time, the filmmaker unpacks a lot of important messages with characters who are largely plausible and relatable. A good watch that made me appreciate people who reach outside their worlds and risk their emotional and physical safety.
