The Avatarization of cinema - in a bad way
11 May 2024
I just watched it in the dolby cinema in tokio, english with japanese subtitles. There were maybe 10 people in the cinena that can hold more than 250 people, on a saturday evening of the starting weekend. So no one cares in japan about this movie.

The presentation in the dolby cinema was phenomenal, great nuanced 3D sound, ink deep blacks on the screen. They really adjusted the sound and vision well.

But some action scenes in the beginning and in the end aside, it didnt help. The story was about 45 minutes too long. Too many shots showing the same face expression of the cgi apes, with their sad and angry eyes. Macy was the only recogniseable actor around this B-Cast. The plot is absolutely forgetable as are the dialogs. The script could have been written by chatgpt with the prompt: write an epic movie like Avatar with Apes.

The cgi was good, but not perfect. You could tell, the apes arent real and so they didnt move me like the real actors in the original series more than 50 years ago. The mainstream soundtrack didnt help either. It cant hold a candle to the experimental tunes by jerry goldsmith from 1968.

As with avatar 2, dune 2 and niw this we see a new type of blockbuster movies, that move too slow, are 30 to 60 minutes too long and should spend more money on actors and writers than on cgi. As loud as they are, they cant fill even the best cinema in the largest metropolis of this planet no more.

Napoleon (2023)

this biopic by the numbers tells us nothing about Napoleon
3 March 2024
What a missed chance. Making a 160 min movie about one of the most charismatic warlords in historie should be more than revisiting certain dates in the history book. Its should tell you about the motivation and development of the character, but this script does none of it. You dont see how and why this little boy from korsika became the ruler of europe, how he became emporer of a land that just hab abolished monarchy. Why his troops where so loyal to him and why he lost in Moskau and against wellington.

Scott should have focussed on one aspect and one period. He could have even focussed on Josephine, making her the main character, like coppola did in priscilla.

Well shot, tense drama
16 December 2023
This has a lot less b-movie-cheese than you would expect from the trailer. Even the kid doesnt spoil it. Beautifully shot with wide lenses, making good use of hdr and dolby atmos - demo worthy for an 4k oled. Characters are good portrait. Pacing is not fast, but it doesnt get dull or boring, because they keep a mysterous shadow around the dracular creature. If you like alien, the fog and the thing from carpenter, you will enjoy this. Its a fresh take on the dracula theme. Its not a slasher movie but a dark drama. And even though the end is known by the novel, they found a good explanation to keep the tension. The only question is: Where is Renfield?

Half an Hour too long, misses the point
22 July 2023
Nolan is good at constructing complicated timing events. But he is not good at telling a biopic. The first half of the movie needs too long to built up, introduces too many charcters the are not important to the story ( heisenberg, Jean Tatlock). So he could have cut half an hour easily to speed things up.

The second thing I was let down, is the focus of the story. The main struggle is not the building of the atomic bomb and the moral desaster that it killed over 200.000 people. The film clearly sticks to the argument, that without the bombs the japanese hadnt capitulated. There is only a minor dream scene where oppenheimer is stepping on the ashes of one single victim. Instead the main concern of the story is oppenheimers reputation, wether he had too close relationships to the communist party or not. So its just another film about the mccarthy era, and not the best. Good night and good luck told a better story about this era.

So this is a navel show of the usa, of the witch hunt for communists after world war 2. But this is a distraction from the real important question wether the us-government became a monster itself while hunting a nazi monster. Until now there was no word of sorry for dropping two atomic bombs, not from obama, not from trump and not from biden when he visited hiroshima for the g7 in june.

Nolans movie sticks strictly to the view of oppenheimer and the us military, never switching to the japanese view. It could have been so much more. A missed opportunity and nolans second worst movie after insomnia.

Impressive technology, but at least 45 Minutes too long
5 April 2023
The first hour is a bit confusing if you havent seen the first film. Figures dont get a good motivation for the hunt thats coming. When the family settles in the village of the waterpeople, the plot goes on pause for 45 to 60 minutes which makes the movie really tired. The last hour ramps up the pace but it never gets too thrilling. Music and dialogs are cheesy.

Much better than the mediocre plot is the rendering technology, which really offers a clear image of the creatures, head and shoulders above other rendered movies.

So its up to you if you want to spend 3 hours on this kitsch tech demo.

Perfect Propaganda
30 December 2022
This is a nearly flawless propaganda movie that fits in the 2020s. Its a clean advertisement for lockheed martin and the military aircraft industry. Comparing it to the first Top Gun, there are some differences: The military is now woke and not only consists of white men, but also of other ethnies and women, though they are only allowed in the second row. The sexualised relationship in the first movie is toned down and replaced with family values and also hints of homo erotism between the male characters. The enemys are never shown as in the first movie, you never see their faces, its just briefly mentioned, that this is a nato operation against a nuclear plant - you could also argue that this is an aggressive act of war, not covered by the UN. But politics are not discussed, the military is just a tool - and the heros just work for the hegemonic position of the usa and dont bother committing a war crime. But as the soldiers the viewers are not allowed to think about it, because if you think, you are dead. Thats the main message of the movie.

surprisingly offbeat, royal deconstruction meets the shining
2 September 2022
Its the best compliment for the film that royal fans are so upset. If you are a royal fan, go watch the old Sissi movies with Romy Schneider. This is the very opposite of it.

Diana is sitting in a prison called the royal palace, the butlers and maids are prison wards, camera work reminds of kubricks shining, the mood is absurd, in a pleasant unpleasant way.

Camerawork with real lighting is much like in a documentary, the jazztunes from Jonny Greenwood fit the mood. Larrain is for chile what Lanthimos is for greece. Watch out for more movies from this director.

Highly recommended! And I could only repeat myself to reach the 600 character mark, amazon is demanding for this review.

a flat long film lacking the drama
12 February 2022
The film has style, but it tells me nothing about why Mrs. Gucci was so upset, that she murdered her ex. I think this is one of the flater films of Ridley Scott, Its kacking Drama and fashion I would have expected. Maybe Scott was the wrong Director. Sorentino would have made a better film and its certainly not in the league of Scorseses Casino.

110 minutes of tiktok brainwash
23 January 2022
Its the end of cinema, like a long tiktok reel, no sense, no joy, nothing to remember, just affection, a brainwash with cute animals, fast food for your brain that makes you dumber than smoking pot.

the birth of monty python
30 November 2021
Well ahead of its time, this is a surreal persiflage with lots of quotes, including caligari. This is the predecessor of the later monty python and kentucky fried movies. It dissesembles the bond character and all if his cliches, great fun to watch.

bad flic with lots of angry young men
20 October 2021
Boring story, its like a competition of young men, trying to look angry. Not much plot, not much acting, very stereotype and forgetable. Better watch the hunger or starred up with jack oconnel.

half a tale of 1001 nights in slow motion
19 September 2021
The film does many thing right: the cast is well casted, the digital fx look very real (thanks to the grainy film look) and the camera sucks us in another world. But the film lacks in the dramaturgy. Every scene is slow and heavy and Zimmers pathetic soundtrack doubles its inertia. There is no room to breath or a change in pace. It doesnt help, that dune part one only tells the first half of the story. For what is happening on screen, its one hour too long, becoming as pathetic as the lord of the rings. Lynchs adaption has more mystery, more crazy and interesting characters. Here we end in kitsch with a story of a so called messiah, dreaming of a loveaffair with a blue eyed framen girl. Its a missed opportunity, what could have been the lawrence of arabia of science fiction, is half a tale of 1001 nights in slow motion.

Freya Mavor is gorgeous in a boring film
14 August 2021
I give one point for each of Freya Mavor legs, one for her red hair. She is really a looker and the camera loves her, but this only holds on for 15 to 20 minutes, then the bore comes in, the script and the plot is running nowhere. Could have maybe hold up for a 30 minutes netflix episode, but not for a whole movie.

LaKeith Stanfield gives a haunting performce
2 August 2021
Wow, this is probably the best movie I saw this year so far (and I saw a lot). Well written screenplay, superb direction and camera, outstanding performance by the cast. This is especially true for LaKeith Stanfield and I cant understand why he wasn't nominated as best actor in a leading role and won. Man, the academy is such a bunch of blind people...

Also Jesse Plemons is one not to forget. His role of Roy Mitchel is one of the most nasty villains on screen. He absolutely nails it with so little gestures and looks.

overlong static boring end of cinema
21 May 2021
Its so big, it cant walk, its missing any thrill or humor, watching 6 superheroes standing around a table and discuss, how they can save the world, then they move in one slow motion scene after the other, the cgi scene look extremely artificial, actors just reading oneliners, story if worse than a mediocre tv series, giving a very undemocratic message, that only a few super rich and superhumans can save the world.

They squeezed every human touch, drama and thrill out of cinema.

This type of movies has grown into dinosaurs and will hopefully disappear as those.

they dont make em like this anymore
30 April 2021
The more hate this movie gets, the better it is. Its a well placed satire on the bigot american culture. Its a women empowerement movie, that makes the metoo movement 20 years later look like a prudent agenda of hypocritics. How showbiz works was all well known back then, but nobody cared.

not too bad, if youre interested in the late 60s
22 January 2021
Its a well written movie about seberg, the fbi and black panthers. stewart plays her role quite believeable. directing is solid.

so if youre interested in what happened with seberg in the late 60s, dont be discouraged by the bad reviews who mostly have political issues with this movie because they disagree with seberg motives.

i wish the author would have been as good as kidmans hairdresser
13 January 2021
It starts promissing with a high class cast, nice introduction and keeps the pace with some interesting cliffhangers.

but the ending in the last 15 minutes of the last episode is a let down.

the authors lay a lot of clues, but miss to develop some important roles like the ones from the husband and kid of the victim. the court scene with the kid is just ridiculous.

so in the end we get an expensive but mediocre whodunnit, where the hairdesser of nicole kidman did a much better job than the writers.

flawed experiment
29 December 2020
Limbo is a one take film like Victoria. but its not so clever constructed. The story and caracters can't convince, their motivations didnt react to me.

most of the film takes place in an illegal fight club. the camera follows the characters through much to long corridors, that only connect one dialogue with the next. camerawork is mediocre, with many much too close closeups, lazy focus and not that interesting viewing angles.

the story is quite boring, dealing with illegal money, banks and a underworld king. Something you have seen 1000 times before.

wait until it will be shown on TV and dont spend any money on it.

after 3 times, the plot becomes clear
28 December 2020
Nolan made a tremendous effort with imax cameras running backwards and actors playing scenes forward and backward. but in the second part he forgets to explain, when time is running forth and back. So people get confused whats happening. He should have given more hints, eg protagonists entering and leaving the inversion machines, to make it easier to follow the plot.

I got it after the third run through. I think a movie should always make the main plot clear in the first run. The script failed here a bit. Inception made it much clearer.

very moving story with exellent actors
21 December 2020
This is a very new twist in an old genre. its a psychological thriller between two uneven characters. Lars Eidinger gives a tremendous performance that is nothing short of christoph waltz in Inglorious basterds. but he gives his character more depth and transforms him from a sadist to a man who also seeks love.

If you like this, I can also recomment Der Hauptmann with Max Hubacher turning from a refugee into a mass murderer. These two films are great exercises on the psychological mechanics of faschism.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

It oversimplifies antisemitism and faschism just for the affect
11 December 2020
You can make comedys over hitler and faschism and you can make dramas, that explain how antisemitism and faschism worked and still works. Tarantinos "Inglorious Basterds" is a good example of the first and Hanekes "Das weiße Band" a good example of the second category.

Jojo starts of as an mediocre satire, but as soon as anne frank enters the stage, it becomes a wannabe explanatory children book. it just looks at oversimplified cliche versions of nazis and antisemitism, changes from laughter to crying tears and back to loughter, just for the affect. Nothing more. And this is dangerous, because its downplaying that faschism and antisemitism work in much smarter ways than shown in the film.

It doesnt expose new insights like a really good satire like chaplins big dictator did. its a failed experiment.
