The Shack (2017)
Feminist BS
During the movie there was a montage of the evil in the world upon which was built the theme of forgiveness. All of it perpetrated by men. God himself/herself called men "idiots". Rather inconsistent with a movie whose major theme revolved around forgiveness and avoidance of being judgmental. Sorry, but I am getting tired of that nonsense. Moreover, it is a dangerous and hurtful message to be sending the boys who might be watching who are exposed to enough civilization destroying gender bias against them as it is. This type of crap used to go by unnoticed. Not anymore.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Imaginative and Thought Provoking - Beautiful
I am certain that many have written of the superb acting, absorbing and imaginative story line and, the remarkable realism of the age progression and regression of the main characters. Some, I am sure, may have criticized the length but, I found it not to be so because it is easy for the thoughtful to develop a profound interest in the characters as well as a fascination with the implications of reverse aging. For example, most of us have said wistfully at one time or another, "If I only knew then, what I know now." The passions of youth can compel us to make unwise choices while disregarding worthwhile pursuits. Benjamin Button had the oppressive effects of a decrepit body when he was young to prevent him from making imprudent choices but, had the wisdom of age to productively direct the passions of a youthful body when he was older. An interesting idea.
Overall, a beautiful, thought provoking movie which I highly recommend. I hope Hollywood makes more movies like this.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
More Popular as Times Passes
In these times, where an "Every man for himself" mentality prevails and one's self worth is measured by possessions, this movie reminds us that the escalating fear that we all have, as this country spirals out of control, is best abated by having someone you can call a true friend.
As time passes and, more of us see that this country is heading inexorably toward social, political and economic disaster, this movie will find an even larger audience of devotees. Perhaps, one day, we will abandon our materialism and discover that true hope which we will desperately need and, a major theme of this movie, lies in our relationships with others. Until then, we will have the Shawshank Redemption to remind us what real friendship looks like.
Bearskin, or The Man Who Didn't Wash for Seven Years (1984)
A fascinating tale for kids and adults
This film is not a slick Hollywood production by any means but I believe this enhances the authenticity of a very good story. The acting too might appear a tad amateurish to those accustomed to Hollywood fare but again, this made the story seem more genuine. The part of the devil was done especially well with just enough malevolence. As a long time teacher in an elementary and junior high school, I can tell you the kids loved this film. And so did I. Every time I watched it, I saw something new and different. It entertains on a number of levels. There are subtle issues relating to good, evil and the source of redemption which is appealing to adults and, on the surface, it is a fascinating tale for the kids. I would highly recommend this as a worthwhile addition to any library or home collection. You will not be disappointed.
