Debbie Does Demons (2023)
Avoid
Most movies have something to help redeem them. Good acting, the story, effects, cinematography, premise etc. This movie has none. Not a single good actor (I'm still convinced they aren't actors. Just randoms from the streets), no good camera shots, no good effects. Its' not even the kind of movie that you should watch just to say you've watched it. It's pure trash with nothing redeeming or worthwhile. And for this to come out around Halloween is kinda insulting.
Save yourself the trouble of sitting through this or even watching a trailer. Avoid and go stick on literally any other movie and your time won't be wasted.
Dead Shadows (2012)
It could be a little worse, could be a little better.
Okay so the story does start off interesting enough (Cowardly kid with a crazy past) and the premise is actually quite interesting as well as the story (not quite "Zombies" but something else) The problem is that they didn't use the budget well enough. Sure the effects are pretty good but there's occasionally some bad camera styling (it's enough to be noticeable) and the music and sound effects are very much below average. It's a shame who they got for the lead role because you can clearly see his lack experience, yet his fellow actors actually do quite a decent job. It does get a lot more interesting near the end of the movie but it doesn't give itself enough time to explore the possibilities well enough.
So in conclusion: If you enjoy cheesy zombie movies/ Creature movies then you may like this. If you don't mind the low-budget feeling horror flicks then you may enjoy it. If you're someone that only enjoys top-end effects and amazing acting then I don't recommend this movie for you.
It's a lot better than some of the horror-zombie-creature flicks as of late but it isn't genre defining, nor is it anything new. I gave it a slightly above average score solely for it trying to do something different. It may not have succeeded in doing something different but at least they tried and that's more than can be said for most movies these days.
Stranded (2013)
Better than expected
So we have a good cast of actors, some pretty good visuals and an interesting story. My biggest comparison to this movie would be The Thing and Species due to "it" having similar features to the creatures in said movies. When I started watching Stranded, I thought it was going to be one of those serious psychological horror movies. It is not one of those movies, instead it's more easily to class it as a creature flick but not one of those overbearingly cheesy ones. My biggest complaint would have to be that it gets really interesting at the end and then....movie over. But I did enjoy Stranded and it's one of those movies where I'd really love a sequel just to further understand the progression of "it".
Resident Evil: First Hour (2011)
Simple things really can be the best.
This rather short series chronicles the first hour or so of Leon S Kennedy in Raccoon city (ever wondered why Leon started with the police uniform in Resident Evil 2? Here is your answer) It is not massively budgeted by any means and it is not largely insightful. The aim is to show how Leon reacted during the first hour of the outbreak and in that respect, it succeeded. Maybe it's not to everyone's taste but i personally loved it. Here's hoping it catches on and they decide to make a full series of the Resident Evil universe.
And just a heads up: This series doesn't involve anything to do with Alice nor the kind of powers she possesses. It doesn't involve fast moving, tentacle faced creatures or anything like that. It's straight up, traditional zombies.
