A crime/thriller roller coaster - worth a look!
23 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I had seen the director's debut film "Misogynist" which I enjoyed, and saw an early viewing of "Sable" and definitely see the evolution in scope, story and visual aesthetics.

The film reminded me of a blend of a Guy Ritchie film and True Romance, with the performance of the film going to the young drug dealer son Colton (played by Chris Petrovski, who I had seen on Madame Secretary as well). The father is also played brilliantly by Jon Briddell and Ayla as the title lead character rounds out a nice tight cast overall.

I'd say the strengths would definitely be the visual style and also the lead performances. I would love to see what can be done on a bigger budget, but definitely worth a watch.

That being said - saw a few other reviews on here and it's a real shame when they are blatant trolls who just make fake profiles and vote down indie films for whatever their agenda is when it is obvious they have not even seen the film and just created profiles recently out of their own angst or jealousy. Indie films need love too! Would definitely recommend the film!

This is why we watch independent films
10 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Without knowing too much about the film (apart from the very direct title), I decided to give it a shot based on the positive reviews; I was not left disappointed.

This is why film-lovers crave to go back and enjoy the indie films; stripped away from the conventional studio story-line arcs and really dig into a unique innovative film that doesn't scare away from pushing the limit.

The strongest element of the film is the fact that it is ENGAGING; there is no fat or any meandering around. The main character is electric, even though I hate to say it because he's plays such a horrible person, the actor (Jon Briddell) does a phenomenal job.

The story is unique and character-driven and I love the chemistry between teacher and student in a very sick game of control. Watch the film; it will carry with you for a long while.

Whoa.
22 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I can't praise this film long enough. Never has a film thrilled me, put me in more suspense and just entertained me as Seven did.

Great acting, amazing and original story, and what a climax. From the director of Fight Club comes this great tale about two detectives following these trails of strange murders.

I must warn you though, this movie is not for the weak or easily disturbed.

All I can say is that if you have not seen it, you must, it is your duty to because it was blow your mind, challenge your intellect and just have a greater understanding of life.

Pulp Fiction...Too Good for Words
24 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Pulp Fiction is one of those movies that is too hard to categorize or explain simply to somebody who has not seen it. It simply has to be experienced. There are very few movies out there that can be called masterpieces, but I believe that this is the single masterpiece of the 90's (along with Goodfellas). Everything about it speaks brilliance from the music, to the acting, to the dialog and much more. If you see this film and just think that it is overblown action and violence, then obviously you did not understand it. It is actually in the quieter scenes that the profundity of the movie comes out.

If you not have seen this epic film, please do so, it will blow your mind and challenge your intellect as well.

Hauntingly Beautiful.
9 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
First off, Paths of Glory is my second favorite film of all time, a feat that is not easy to accomplish with my amount of movie-seeing. This movie is so powerful and brilliant that words cannot even express it. All I can say is please see it if you haven't. If you see no other movies in your entire life except Paths of Glory, then you would have done a good job. This masterpiece will not only not let you down, but it will force you to stand up and take notice to the horror of humanity and the heroism of one man.

I am truly not over-doing it in this summary, words simply cannot explain how beautiful every part of this film is. You just have to see it for yourself.

Glory (1989)
10/10
One of the best war films ever.
7 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Glory is definitely the best civil war film ever. The film is top notch on the acting, visuals, realism and story-telling. Also, Edward Zwick sure does know how to make some great and heart-wrenching battle scenes (The Last Samurai as well directed by Zwick has some of the most intense battle scenes I've ever seen). This movie makes you feel for each and every one of the people under Shaw's battalion. In my mind, it is Morgan Freeman's best work (even beating out The Shawshank Redemption).

This is an underrated war film that is as good as some of the well-known greats such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and others.

Great movie. Nuff said.

Changed My Life.
7 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
American History X really opened my eyes to the world of racism and how cruel human beings can be sometimes. This story follows a violent extreme skin-head (Norton) that spends three years in jail for killing two black people and how he changed through jail. He then tries to help his younger brother, who idolizes him, not to go down the same path he did. You really can't find a more powerful movie than this. This movie forces you to open your eyes through harsh realism and although some things are disturbing, it makes you take notice. Everything about this movie is so incredible I can't even find words for it. All I can say is that if you have not seen this movie, it really is a must to see because it teaches you something and is really powerful.

Norton's best performance and a must for everyone.

You Taking to Me?
6 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was incredible. I just saw Taxi Driver a couple of weeks ago after hearing all my life about how it was a classic and it definitely did not disappoint. The beginning starts off a little bit slow, but the climax is amazing. Great acting, dialog, directing, and basically everything. Not to mention a great theme song that played perfectly throughout the movie. Along with Goodfellas, The Deer Hunter, and Raging Bull, Taxi Driver has to go down as one of Denero's greatest movies.

How this didn't win best picture is beyond me. A pure classic.

Yeah, I'm talking to you and telling you to rent this movie!

The Shining (1980)

Great Horror Masterpiece
6 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Kubrick's The Shining will go down in my book as the best horror film ever, even beating The Exorcist which I thought was great. First off, the story makes for such a great horror epic. It stays pretty loyal to the book and did not disappoint me for a second. Many people complain about the pacing and how slow it is, but I believe that even heightens the terror when some real climax scenes happen. Jack Nicholson is absolutely incredible in this. I can't think of another actor that could have done a better job than him.

If you have not seen The Shining by now, I urge you to do so.

Great Horror Classic.

One of the Worst Films I have ever seen.
6 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
After hearing such great things from everybody about this film, I can honestly say this is a film that I believe to have no redeeming qualities to it. I watched it numerous occasions and understood it, but it simply is horrible. I cannot fathom how so many people can think this film is a cult classic already. The acting is horrible, the story is weak and although it tries to be artistic, it does not accomplish it's goal. It is a pretentious film that has no merit. I always look for something good in a movie, but I could not find one good thing about this. It tries too hard and fails at everything.

Please don't rent this, it will be a waste of your time and money.

Touching
5 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Ordinary People is very straight-forward and easy to understand, yet there are many deep levels that has to be explored in a film like this. This movie is very psychological and deals with a family that is torn apart by the death of the eldest brother. Each of the family members deals with the tragedy in their own way but the person that is probably most affected by it is the younger brother, Conrad.

This movie is very sentimental in a good way and will leave you very touched at the end.

The Oscars finally got it right this year, Ordinary People is a movie that you will not forget.

Two Hands (1999)

Just Plain Awesome
5 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
If you enjoyed films like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, you are going to LOVE Two Hands. It has the same type of black humor beat to it and will keep you entertained through the whole film. Like Pulp Fiction, it has the wacky scenarios that the characters get into and how they deal with them. Along with Gallipoli and Picnic at Hanging Rock, this has to be one of the best Australian films I've seen. It also stars a young Heath Ledger before he got real big in the states.

This is a terribly underrated movie that I believe is just as good as Pulp Fiction and those greats. You have to see it!

Dumbo (1941)
10/10
Disney Keeps it Short and Sweet
5 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Clocking in at just 64 minutes, Dumbo is one of the shortest films out there, but it gets to the point.

Dumbo is probably one of the best Disney films along with the most sad. However, it has a great message about how people react to things that they aren't used to. For the very few who don't know, Dumbo is a baby elephant with abnormally big ears and is treated badly because of it by everyone except his mother. It is heartbreaking when they are torn apart but Dumbo keeps strong and is finally reunited with her. It is a touching film that should not be missed.

The songs are great too.

The Matrix (1999)

Pretty Mind-Blowing
5 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I had the great experience of seeing the Matrix in the theater when it first came out, and to tell you the truth, I was blown away by it. Never before had I seen a movie so thought-provoking and interesting. Aside from all the amazing action and visuals, this movie challenged people to think that there might be something else about our existence that we don't know about. Although I was pretty confused about some things the first time I saw it, I can now say after seeing it numerous times, that this is one Sci-Fi film you don't want to miss.

The Matrix definitely raised the bar for all Science-Fiction films as we know it. Go see it.

Seven Samurai (1954)

Probably The Best Film Ever Made
5 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing The Seven Samurai when I was 10 years old and loving every single part of it. Even though I did not understand some of the underlying sophisticated meanings behind the film, I still was blown away by the groundbreaking visuals and action. Now, having seen it recently again, I can honestly say that this film is probably the best film ever made. Not only does it have amazing battle scenes, but it is more about the story of men that will give everything for nothing in return. There are some very touching scenes between the brave Samurai and the poor villagers. The Samurai represent everything that is good in man and I believe, are the models for humanity.

If you are a Kurosawa fan or not, this is a movie that you have to see because it is absolutely incredible. You will not be disappointed by this masterpiece.

Pretty Depressing
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
From what I heard of Million Dollar Baby, I came into it with great expectations. After seeing it, I can honestly say that I was pretty disappointed and thought the movie was just plain average. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent story and it does turn pretty quickly, but there are problems. The first problem is that it starts off way way too slow. We literally see Maggie come back and forth to the gym with no progression of the plot. The boxing scenes are okay, but I expected more of them.

MAJOR SPOILER The turn was probably the most shocking thing about the movie and kept me from falling asleep. Yes, it was a little touching, but too sentimental at the very least. Plus the death of Maggie was very grim and maybe a little unrealistic.

See this film but don't come into it with great expectations.

Kubrick Really Opens Up
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This has to be the most unique film I've ever seen. From it's stunning and sometimes disturbing visuals, to it's dialog, A Clockwork Orange keeps you engrossed for the whole time. Taking place in the near future, this film follows Alex and his gang of Droogs as they commit acts of atrocities in an attempt to look for the good old "ultra-violence". Alex is later arrested and put through this revolutionary rehabilitation center where the people try to "correct" all the evil that is in him. Without giving away too much of it, this movie primarily appealed to me because it was nothing that I had ever seen before and I was shocked to see that this movie was made back in 1971. This is a cult classic and a must see. Viddy well.

Citizen Kane (1941)

Still Great
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
AFI ranks Citizen Kane as the number one greatest film of all time...so is it really? In my opinion, no, but the fact is that without Citizen Kane there would be no other real films. Citizen Kane revolutionized the way we see and produce films. It's groundbreaking visuals made it unique from all the other films being done. The film follows Charles Foster Kane, who influenced many through his amazing life and the mystery he leaves towards death. Yes, the story is nothing totally spectacular now and people who haven't even see it probably know the whole "Rosebud" thing by now, but it is still a classic masterpiece and should not be missed.

Ikiru (1952)
10/10
Heartbreaking
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
As a person that can boast about having seen over 3,000 films, I have to say that Ikiru ranks up there in the top five. It is a story about a man that has to face what most humans fear to even talk about the most: death. It is his journey to cherish the last days of his life that he felt he took for granted all these years. Ikiru is only one of two films that I have ever cried to. Kurasawa makes you feel for this man with the greatest empathy. He takes you into the movie and really makes you question what life is all about and the importance of it. I close this review by saying this: if you only have to see five films in your entire life, let Ikiru be one of them.

Goodfellas (1990)
10/10
The Ultimate Gangster Film
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Goodfellas is the type of movie that has it all. Action, thriller, suspense and even some comedy thrown in makes this epic film the best of it's kind. The pace of this film is brilliant. There is no dull scene, no fillers and it leaves you completely entertained from start to finish. Joe Pesci is absolutely amazing and deserved the Oscar no question. You don't even have to be a person that likes gangster films to appreciate Goodfellas. If you were one of the people that found The Godfather to be a little slow or boring at times, I highly recommend this film as a substitute "mafia" film. You will definitely get your money's worth if you rent this one. Best film of the 90's without a doubt.

Casablanca (1942)

Just Didn't Do it for me.
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
While I can totally respect Casablanca for being regarded as one of the "classic" films of all time, I still saw nothing special in it. The story is nothing new (even for 1942) and the ending is as unrealistic as it gets. Yeah, like Bogart would really just immediately try to save the guy who's with the love of his life? Even under the circumstances, it just seems far-fetched. There are some good things about the film. I think the acting is fairly decent and there are few people that would disagree that the dialog is top-notch. With all that being said, I think if you haven't seen this movie, you definitely should, but just don't expect to be blown away.

Platoon (1986)
10/10
The Horror of Man
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Platoon ranks up there as being one of the greats in war films. Why? My view is because of the angle that it takes on the Vietnam War. Platoon is a movie that drops you straight into the war and within five minutes of seeing the film, you feel like your there with the soldiers. The film follows a young soldier (Sheen) who volunteered and his struggles as he is torn apart between two sergeants. The best praise I can give to this film is it's ability to totally engross you in almost every character in the platoon. There are some very disturbing parts in the film, but they are only placed there to show the true horror of war and the affects it can have on men. I recommend this film to anybody that likes war films. It's a must.

Simply Stunning
3 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I would like to state that war films are probably my favorite genre of film. I have seen all the greats, from Paths of Glory to Platoon to Apocalypse Now and many in between. However, this movie takes the spot as number 1. Never before have I been so moved by a film in my entire life. It was the only film along with Ikriu (1952) that brought me to tears. To call this a film is a travesty, it is more of an epic journey of two brothers drafted and the tolls that war have on them. This movie makes you feel like your on the battlefield with these soldiers. It's harsh realism only heightens the emotion. It is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Without giving too much away I truly can't see somebody not being affected by this movie. Just remember to keep the tissues close by for this one.
