Hex (2017)
Impressive Indie period piece
A period piece for indie film is always ambitious and tough but the producers of Hex have successfully pulled off a good film with most excellent costuming, tone and atmosphere. Set in the 1600's most of the filming takes place outside in a very fitting forest with somewhat ominous looking foliage and trees which really set the environment. The film is not loaded with action but the plot and main storyline in the development of characters centering around religious themes is plenty to keep it engaging throughout with thought provoking situations around human behavior. Well done and worth the look. Kuddos to cast and crew for a stunning period piece.
We'll Test It on Humans (2016)
Seriously funny stuff here!
Ok, I'm hard on comedies but this one sunk it's claws into me and it was a good feeling. The hilarious story of two keystone cop type buddies Ernie (Brian Gianci) and Joe (James Wirt) who decide to test an experimental love potent on two unsuspecting real estate agents to judge the effectiveness of the drug. Ernie wants to slip some to his wife to help their love lost marriage but wants to be sure it is 'safe'. His brother and partner in crime, Joe, is an aspiring filmmaker and wants to document the whole thing. James Wirt TW is way roariously funny coupled with Brian Giance. Stand performances as well as from Kevin O'Donnell, the angry, jealous husband of the real estate gal they drugged. He finds out about it and captures Joe to torture him and tell him who his partner is. So, so very thigh slapping funny stuff. Fantastic filmmaking and worthy of any watch.
Dexter Jackson's Guide to Dating (2017)
Totally hilarious comedy with excellent scripting
This series is so easy to digest because it is totally fun, witty, and has an excellent ensemble cast that hits all the right marks. The different dating scenario's are side splitting to say the least and the extremely good expressions on Dexter's face are priceless. Great writing, cinematography, acting and directing. I know the series won a ton of awards out in LA last year. Well deserved! Just a joy to binge on.
Julia 17 - (2017)
Very nice for a first time filmmaker
Raw and gritty story of abuse and neglect. Andreea Boyer shines in her role as a first time filmmaker, director, producer and star of this gripping indie film. Some really great visuals, some will have you cringing. Your heart will long for a break for the girl in this flick who has been repeatedly abused by her father, abandoned by her mother and taken advantage of by others. Some great acting here all around. Wonderful soundtrack as well and great locations.
Disposable (2017)
Fabulous Thriller Ride!
Hold on to your seats because this is a fab thriller ride! I love a good psychological. Hitchcock style thriller and this one delivers and then some. Great story-line, superb script, memorable performances from the actors and did I mention the twists. Bill Thompson played by Tommy Beardmore, is the victim of psychological trauma that has left him unsure of his actions and what he is or isn't capable of doing. He becomes the prime suspect in a serial killer cast and he doesn't know if he is guilty or not. Just a great plot line. Where most indies fall short in production value and great settings, this film has a big budget, studio look and feel. Kudos to Daniel Cayarga the writer/director for this jewel of pure indie entertainment.
Black Widows (2016)
Wonderfully funny and smart
What a wonderful find! I loved this flick. Perfect chick flick but with significant social message about rape, and the consequences of. OK, it's really funny but thought provoking. Three best friends Nora (Brigitte Graham), Olivia (Shelby Kocee) and Darcy (Jordan Elizabeth) are 3 lovely ladies who have the same problem, abusive men in their lives. It is told through Darcy, a single young woman who is unlucky in love. Her 2 gal pals set her up with an internet date who at first seems terrific, until after consensual sex, he then forces himself on her with rape. She goes all reclusive, her friends go and find her, the truth comes out and the girls hatch a scheme to get back at the guy by picking him up at a bar, getting him drunk and hauling his behind out to the desert to be left naked. Unfortunately, he comes to long enough to stagger around, hit his head and die. He's only the beginning. The gals one by one bump off their significant others, in cold, but funny ways. All the while cracking jokes and just making it a load of entertainment. The acting was brilliant! The story so amusing and the music right on.
The Girl in the Cornfield (2016)
Well done indie horror
I love a good creepy cornfield movie and this one is no exception. If you enjoy other cornfield flicks like Children of the Corn, Dark Night of the Scarecrow or The Husk you need to add this to your list of creepers. Heather is driving her friend and sister home from a night at the club, she doses and runs into a girl in the middle of a back roads cornfield. When they get out of the car, she has vanished into the cornfield leaving behind a ghastly trail of blood. After they return home the doorbell rings in the middle of the night. There is no one there but the run over girls bloody nightgown was left on the bed. There is plenty of imagination, imagery and suspense that will definitely keep you on the edge. Well shot with quite good cinematography, good sound, good effects and some above average acting. Ryan Callaway has produced, written and directed an entertaining horror flick.
