Run Rabbit Run (2023)
Screen Auatralia. What were you thinking
This is like a first draft script that you might give it eight more drafts to see if its worth pursuing. Was so under cooked. This should never have been produced. Such a waste of time and money. Such a vacuous story. Noting thoughtful or insightful in this one. Its a shame that there is no support for the script writer to be mentored or guided. What's is going on with Australian film that this made it to the screens. Im embarrassed and ashamed that my country can't make more meaningful and worthwhile films than this. Its a real pity that this is what got up. Surely there are better script ideas than this, that can tell more true Australian stories. Shame on screen Australia.
Derren Brown: Pushed to the Edge (2016)
This should never have been made. The Milgram experiment was done and dusted in 1963.
Come on people. Didn't we learn from the Milgram experiment in 1963 that putting people through this can ruin a persons life? And Derren did this to four people allegedly!!!
This saddens me that this kind of thing was ever made. The field of psychology has moved on, yes it is well know that human capacity to follow orders, though there is a spectrum of people who will and won't. This is obvious in how Derren weeds out people that will not comply. This show does not offer anything new, or any real insight so it becomes pure exploitation for the titillation of the audience at the expense of the victim of the show. I don't care what they might have signed when trying to get onto a Derren show, to put people into that position for the sake of entertainment, is not justified. If the purpose of the show is to inform people about human nature there are more ethical ways to do that.
Again look up The Milgram experiment for some background on this.
Unhinged (2020)
Bad
Dumb. Stupid waist of time. Very violent no real story. Bottom of the barrel , just dont do it.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
an Under cooked rough cut
I'm a fan of the original, and I was looking forward to seeing this squeal. The look of the film was stunning, but at times felt over the top and contrived.
The main character, I never got on side with. He was so blank, plain and uninvolving that I was not drawn in at all. This is a new breed of replicant, one that is fully compliant. He lacks any real drive or passion. He just fades into the background. Even hes' holo girlfriend does not make him attractive to watch. His expressions are like a Ken doll. They never waver or give a glimpse of any kind of inner workings.
Sometimes there was great silence, then the music would take over and was over baring. The editing really felt stilted. Like it was just a rough cut. Some scenes meandered, and the gaps between lines felt uncomfortable. Perhaps the director lacks an understanding of English speech and cadence.
The plot was slow, and seemed to be all over the place. I thought the main idea was a bit simple. No great philosophical questions about human existence here. I didn't understand the baddie of the film. The new replicant creator, Wallace. He was just 2d evil.
The Deckard character comes into the script much too late. The already struggling plot just gets drawn out more. Focus is lost from the main character.
Other times it felt like it was giving the audience a big wink to the original movie. The look of some characters, lines from the original. All of this just worked more to distance me from the movie. It also came across as cheesy and naff.
Overall I was very disappointed. The script really let it down.
Since seeing this film, i have watched the three shorts that fill in the gaps of plot between the original film and this 2049 one. So much more happens in these shorts than the entire whole film 2049. It would have been better if this film covered all of that span, rather than giving us this thin plot that is over stretched.
Juste la fin du monde (2016)
Stage to Film over the top hysterical - falls apart
This film mostly set in one location, giving away it's origin from the stage just doesn't work.
I felt like a fly on the wall of a family shouting at each other with so much hate, yet I never got any clues as to why. There was lots of backstory for sure, but I never go a sense of what any of this was about.
I never got to know any of the characters let alone like any of them. The music is over the top and intrusive, and the ending was so out there and coo coo, I felt like I had just dropped some LSD.
So much shouting and tension the more it went on I felt myself hating the film and the characters more and more.
Not a good time or interesting time at all. I got nothing from this film but a headache.
I want my time back.
Ekko (2007)
Nicely Understated
This is a small tight film with few characters and locations. It's the performances and script which make this film very watchable. It starts by raising a number of questions about who this father and son are and what they are doing. This is an intriguing and engaging start.
The relationship of the two main characters is very believable; full of pathos and love. This film touches on some core human emotions and takes the viewer on a journey and struggle of the main character who needs to reconcile with his past but also wants to form a deep connection with his son. The main character struggles with his identity as a father and how he can break the shackles of his own father relationship.
Overall a nice film which is touching, understated and overall satisfying.
Transcendence (2014)
The singularity mashed into Hollywood formula
I was excited to see this film. The idea of the singularity is an interesting one and offers so much potential for an exciting and interesting film. Unfortunately, this film does not live up to that potential. It is not clear who's story it is. The outcome and where it goes is predictable. The ending is very happy families. It becomes a battle between the state and the public at large against a super human force which wants to turn humans into mindless drones. It ends up feeling like a man against monster movie with a lovely duvey ending. Pewk factor was high. Don't waist your money. Get 'Her' out from DVD shop instead.
