C'era una volta il West (1968)
You're Kidding me right?
I rarely leave reviews and I certainly don't like leaving negative ones, but I can't believe that there is anyone who thinks that this is a great move, non-the-less a great one. And yet, this film (if you want to call it that) is on the top 250. You're kidding me right? If you think that a movie is great just because of cinematography and production design then maybe you will like this movie, because both of these are excellent. But if you want to actually be involved in the story, then this is a dreadful film.
You don't know who characters are or what they want until you reach a running time when most films are over, and if you can get involved with them or the story, (because you can't have a story with out any characters) then how is this engaging?
The pacing is bad. The cartoon characters, pregnant pauses and most goofy music are laughable. I actually normally love Ennio Morricone in some of his later work and is actually one of my favorite composers, so the decisions come down to Leone to use comical music as well as heartfelt music during a rape scene! (Which isn't meant to be ironic, or if it is, it doesn't work)
Nothing in this movie makes the remotest bit of sense, and is really just an exercise in creating a reality that never existed. People have gotten colder not warmer than in history because they have been desensitized, and this concept that everyone in the west was in a free-for-all of unbridled violence is just rubbish.
Ultimately, I think that some people watch movies and others get involved in the movie. And this movie clearly caters to the former, because there is nothing here to get involved in. Leone has done some decent work in his other fable ONCE UPON A TIME IN America which is a great film in terms of characters, but ultimately disappointing in terms of story. So to me, the problem here is that Leone is a better directer than writer and you can't fake writing.
First Love (2010)
Heartfelt Surf FIlm with Filmmaker's Heads In The Right Place
Hi All,
I rarely ever write reviews, but since I noticed there is only one here at the time of this writing, I figured I should step up to the plate. Or maybe a more appropriate metaphor would be charge the wave.
It's a good film. The personalities and surfing skills of the characters, the way the film was put together and the dedication of the filmmakers made this film endearing. And let's not forget that it's about surfing, which is the most cinematic sport on the planet!
I would recommend this film to anyone who loves surfing...
Job well done ladies. I salute your spirit...
Harry's War (1981)
This FIlm Is in A Class By Itself
HARRY'S WAR is one of the only American films ever made that really attempts to reveal the corruption in our governmental system. Other than Frank Capra's MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON there has never really been a studio film made that tells it how it really is. And although this film only scratches the surface of how absolutely corrupt and unconstitutional the I.R.S. is, it does deliver a shocking amount of truth, within a film community that is undeniably censored and most of the time pure propaganda.
It's amazing the power that film has. It people saw this film in mass. It would start a revolution.
The Art of Travel (2008)
Basically Neutral
I do not disagree with most the negative comments the have been left previously. Motivations in particular were lacking. Some have said, "why would the main character have signed up". But why would any of the men have signed up? The leader of the expedition has his wife with him who fondles him at every opportunity. And anyone who has ever gone into the wild without an even male/female balance knows how the issue of animal husbandry rears its ugly head when people are away from society and their instincts take over. Also what kind of young men would sign onto an expedition where they can't have sex for a year or more?!
And I am not trying to be funny. This seems very strange to me. And not one of the other guys tries to make a move on the other girl?!...ridiculous. As ridiculous as the two topless Nordic girls that grab the main character for a threesome. From a guys point of view, it made me happy and I laughed, but this guys ain't exactly Juan Bond.
My biggest problem, however was the ending. He tells the girl that he's going to come with her to Prague. He makes a gigantic romantic speech to profess his love and tell her that he's addicted to her and then turns around and tells her he's not going with her.
Plain and simply that just ticked me off. He's writing a book about travel, but can't travel to Eastern Europe to meet her family or help her deal with her dying father?! Nice guy. I love you but I rather go watch a eighteen inch geyser explode.
Good grief...
I enjoyed a lot of the film, but it isn't very well thought out. It does do a good job at exemplifying the virtues of freedom and travel, but also shows that is has a price...
What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)
This is a great film!
This is the most important movie that has been made so far. It is not perfect as a film, but is vastly interesting entertaining and reveals the fact the people in the world are beginning to wake up and understand that how we think and act effects everyone. One part of the film talks about a an experiment on water, where a Japanese photographer show molecules in there natural state and then again after they had been blessed by a Zen Buddhist monk and the water had changed form into something beautiful. This experiment revealed that there is a direct, material effect from consciousness. I have told many many friends and people that I don't even know to rent this movie and if they didn't like it, that I would reimburse them. I have never had to pay once and have had overwhelmingly positive responses from them. This is a film that you will want to watch over and over again.
