Constantine (2005)
The exorcist becomes an Action/Horror flick, but is that enough?
I come into seeing this movie thinking it is going to be the Christian end of the world version of the Matrix. While I am not a Constantine graphical novel fan, this movie definitely feels like a Vertigo product.
John Constantine (Kenue) plays his part like a dream. A chain smoking demon exorcist bad ass who knows something, and because he does, he is paying for with fees on his soul every day. While hunting, Constantine runs into LA cop Anglia (Rachel Weisz) and the Demon hunter happens, and down the rabbit hole he goes. ^^ The movie gets one thing perfectly right, it carries that dark graphical novel feel with it. One could put little square text boxes in the corner if needed, and it would work seamlessly. The catch, is that like most graphical novels, is that there is usually a bit too much dialog over action. For those expecting a Matrix esq trill ride, might want to pick look else where. But for those that like devilishly dark films with a biblical. It comes off a lot like the exorcist, with action and horror. Not the most perfect mix, but the While a masters in Christian history is not required, the complete clueless will feel lost when watching this film unless they are paying close attention. As a mythology buff, there are parts 'dumbed down'. The lance of Longilus is called more aptly, the spear of dynasty (the blade that pierced Jesus and was stained with his blood, while other parts, (namely towards the end, which I will not give away for spoiler reasons) are amped up. But the final act has a few twists and surprises that make it a thrill.
Definitely a movie I'd recommend seeing.
Oh! Sûpâ Miruku-chan (1998)
Terrible by even Adult swim standards, but has potential to grow on you
This show is something that is just odd, and doesn't agree with it's viewers at all. The Main character comes off as a jerk and very rude. Seeming like Adult swim made the translation like that on purpose, and it comes off completely terribly... The robot main comes off as the helpless mother. This show seems like it is untented at a younger audience (one of the plot lines is to lure out the counter fitters by making a Belgium waffle stand, which breaks out into a Public broadcasting worthy song) but given the material of it (the robot dog p***ing on the floor) it is something I would definitely never show my children. (at one point, they even swear and the line "With this money, I can become a Real Woman" by a man dressed as a woman is said... but at 12:30 this is apparently allowed)
The animation style seems to change from low kitty grade, to standard anime, to live action weirdness.
Seeing it on Adult swim now... and when the 'president' talks, Clearly you can clearly see the WTC Buildings in the background. Not cool at all. Even though it takes place in japan supposedly
But by the end of the show, it was getting better, and it was very slowly growing on you, but this kind of material I can see most getting very sick of quite quickly. It clearly does not have the the "WTF" lasting value that Aqua teen hunger force, or Sealab 2001 have (a lasting Adult swim theme)
The anime quality was low kiddy grade. but geared to adults makes quite the contrast, but as adult swim says. "not untented for anyone under 14" But at the same time, put up the disclaimer, "Not untented for anyone over 41"
Rating: 4.5/10
25th Hour (2002)
Remarkable
An Urban Epic if there ever was one, a story of love, loss, betrayal, and choices. I've never been a huge Spike Lee Fan, but this was amazing beyond compare. Edward Norton in a roll of a lifetime (in a day). From his powerful "f- You" speech that is simply powerful beyond measure, to the father-son ending that just screams "What now".
The rest of the cast is just as outstanding. Nortons friends almost acting as the angel and devil of the shoulders. Each different sides, but Norton has his own side, and his own roll to do. This movie starts at all the right places, ends at all the right places and ties up every knot but the last one, one which doesn't need to be tied. From living that live of a day, to loving the one you love when your going to go away. An Amazing film with one of the most underrated actors at the helm (Norton). Must see 10+
