Cheer (2020–2022)
10/10
A deep, but incredible view on cheerleading
13 January 2022
I've just finished season 2...wow.

This is more than just a show about Cheer. Given the success of season 1, season 2 builds on that and then some.

A lot darker than what I expected but incredibly somber. They don't hold back on the controversy surrounding Jerry and some of the others that become apparent during the series.

For anyone thinking, oh, it's just a cheerleading show. Absolutely not. It's a fantastic documentary about people who struggle with fame and try to push themselves each time they perform.

An absolute must watch.

And Just Like That...: Tragically Hip (2021)
Season 1, Episode 5
2/10
Tragically losing appeal
30 December 2021
I enjoyed the first two episodes of this new series. A take on life as you get older and face the prospect of loss.

Since then...it's been a hard slog. Carrie is incredibly unlikeable. I would be Samantha and cut her off too.

Charlotte is the insufferable mother.

Miranda is the only one I don't mind at this point but after all previous drama with Steve, it just doesn't make sense. I say this an openly gay person!

My biggest issue is they all act as if they're in their 20's again. Come on. Move past it.

This has been a really disappointing slide into a nothing TV show. I've gone back and watched old SATC's, which even with their flaws, are leagues ahead of this writing.

Not at all what I'd expected
7 January 2020
I didn't believe this could be a good film after the hammering it got by critics and movie goers. Turns out, I went with my gut and thought this wasn't half bad.

Before I get into the plot - the score. My word, is there nothing Hans Zimmer can't do? Just so powerful, such a cool soundtrack that really hits it off.

I'm a big fan of Jessica Chastain and whilst this isn't the most exciting villain, she always does well. The story itself is actually a hit for me. I like the background to Jean Grey and the way Sophie Turner plays her. Visually, the film is beautiful. It has to be with what they've included.

I don't think you'll hear much of this film when they next decide to revisit the XMen, but compared to previous instalments, I'd definitely recommend giving this a go.

From a casual Star Wars fan...
27 December 2019
So rather than meticulously go through each film and how it got to this, I will say, I did enjoy this film. But in terms of story telling, it's lacking.

I was one of those that really liked The Last Jedi. What Rian Johnson did was different and I actually think it made for a really great watch. What frustrated me about Rise of Skywalker was that it was clear an hour in, it was trying to undo most of what had happened in TLJ. Scenes were cluttered together and would quickly move from one place to the next. The story itself didn't feel thought out, it felt like the quickest way to get the job done.

The story of Rey's past felt rushed. Admittedly, TLJ didn't delve too deep, but the reveal of who her parents were was a 'Oh, Ok' moment. And then, you'd move on.

Action wise, you get your fill of it. It looks beautiful. The actors in this film play their parts brilliantly.

If you're a die hard Star Wars fan, I think you'll be left disappointed. There are too many quick wins in this film for it to feel like someone has really taken their time with it. I enjoyed it, but I would have expected more for the end of such a saga.

Paddington 2 (2017)
10/10
Absolutely Fantastic
3 April 2018
This is not my usual kind of film. I've never seen the first Paddington but my mum couldn't wait to watch this. Now I can't wait for the 3rd

This is such a heartfelt film that I would challenge anyone who didn't feel a little emotional during the final scenes. It hasn't been tainted by a typical Hollywood script, it stays true to its roots and delivers an incredible family film.

Brilliantly funny, with Hugh Grant a perfect fit for the villain. An actor who isn't afraid to make fun of himself and this film fits perfectly. There are so many scenes which you can't help just smile at.

The prison scenes were so well put together. What I particularly loved about this film is that there were no lulls, everything had a meaning and flowed perfectly.

I am not at all surprised that this film received the praise it did. I never expected to enjoy a film about a bear but I wouldn't honestly rec9mmend it to anyone with a soul.

I sincerely hope Michael Bay is done after this...
13 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
First off, i'm actually a fan of Transformers. I didn't mind Age of Extinction, even with the typically horrendous humour and mess of a plot.

But this...this just took the cake and ate all of it. The Last Knight is the biggest big budget mess i've seen. I was actually looking forward to seeing this after watching the trailer but didn't manage to find it in IMAX; it was taken off unusually quickly. I can now see why! The only reason I gave two stars is that visually, the film delivers. Incredible CGI, something a little too much, but I didn't come away with a headache when it jumped from fight to fight.

Instead I ended up with a massive migraine from the plot. Seriously, who wrote this!? Some staff is the most powerful artifact ever but it's taken 5 films to find it? Earth is in fact Unicron but all the action from the past 4 films doesn't get him going? It's a complete insult when Anthony Hopkin's character (oh how the mighty fall) says a Transformer kills Hitler. What the hell? This film feels like Michael Bay just sticking two fingers up to everyone and going hell for leather. The humour wasn't just bad, it was horrific. Every scene where you thought there might be an essence of seriousness ended up being a Michael Bay tribute of sex jokes, insults and some of the worst writing you will hear in any film, let alone something the size of Transformers.

Megatron is a gang leader, who recruits some of the worst Decepticons you will see across the franchise. Rather than being intimidating, they're like the comedy villains who you end up laughing at. Megatron negotiating to get his pals out of robot prison? Sweet Jesus.

The potentially interesting Nemesis Prime story lasts all of 10 minutes before a few words from Bumblebee turn him back into his insufferable Optimus ego. All interest in Prime goes when he starts rallying his motley crew with just some of the worst dialogue written.

I'm genuinely stunned that Michael Bay has been allowed to continuing ruining Transformers all this time. This does feel like the last one he will ever touch, thankfully. They need to restart this whole franchise, get a decent director and for gods sake write a NORMAL script! You have to see this just to say you have, but just to give you fair warning: The Last Knight is the biggest joke of 2017.

Sully (2016)

Tom Hanks can do no wrong
20 December 2016
I've seen a lot of films this year, this was one of the best by a mile.

Until this film, I hadn't heard of the actual story. For anyone who is in the same boat, this film will peak your interest and then some. I came out of the cinema and everyone around me was talking about it.

Tom Hanks, yet again, delivers. I don't think there has been one film he's been in I haven't liked. He just fits this character perfectly. In fact, I think every person cast does a great job. They all just fit. Even the actors on the plane, who aren't featured a lot and who are usually a little annoying, work so well.

Every scene is just the right length and what I really liked is that they don't over do it. Each aspect of the story, from the investigation to how the wife is at home is played out brilliantly.

You genuinely get behind the characters in this film, kudos to Clint Eastwood for his brilliant directing with Sully.

For anyone who has yet to see this film, do so before it ends at the cinema. You won't be disappointed.

Good, but not great
20 December 2016
I think any Star Wars film has and always will have immediately high expectations. Rogue One is no different.

Visually, the film was spectacular. This is another notch up in the game of CGI. The actions scenes were beautiful to watch and the human CGI work was a real feat of special effects.

The way Darth Vader is used in this film too is clever. Not too much. A few scenes which just make you appreciate that character and what he represents. His last scene in particular was one of the more memorable in the film.

I like Felicity Jones as the lead. Believable, not too serious and she fits the character perfectly. Being honest, I wasn't really interested in many of the other characters, although they all played their part.

So what wasn't so good? The introduction. Far too quick. All the characters were introduced in minutes which just made things a little messy.

The movie then seemed to slow down for a lot of dialogue and trips to other planets. This went on a little too long in my opinion. It then built up to a great ending, but I needed bringing back into the story to get me really interested again.

My final gripe - the score of this film just didn't do it for me. Michael Giacchino is a great composer, but it would have been good to hear a little more 'rogue' in this if that makes sense. He could have been a little less traditional and strayed from John Williams just a bit more.

Good film? Yes. Incredible to watch, just not as entertaining as i'd had hoped.

Lousy, American propaganda with a smattering of racism
3 September 2016
I actually enjoyed the first two Purge films. But this was a really poor attempt at what could have been an interesting plot.

What irritated me most about this film was the casual use of racism to get a cheap laugh. The cinema was packed and about 70% of the audience laughed, so apparently using black people as the basis for most of the jokes in this film should be hilarious. For me, it completely ruined sections of this film.

The lead characters are all generic. None of them you want to succeed. Even when it comes to the final 10 minutes, I couldn't care less about the senator or her security guard. I was quite happy when it was all over.

The one liners are absolute comedy. Everything is 'I'm back' or 'we can do this!'. It's script writing at it's finest.

Another thing. Michael Bay is producer. A man who has a reputation for making big money but ruining franchises. Once this film is over you can instantly see his influence throughout. He's an awful director and just as bad as a producer.

I wouldn't recommend seeing this film. It's a TV film if that.

The BFG (2016)

Bore of a film
15 August 2016
I'll say this - if I had children, I think it would have been a good trip. However, this was one of the more boring films this year and unfortunately ended up being an expensive nap.

First of all, Ruby Barnhill. I think this will be her one film and that's it. A very annoying actress who just comes off as a brat. Her voice began to grate about 5 minutes in. A young Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) would have been perfect.

The film was long for a 2 hour film and it drrraaaaggggeedddd. The scenes with the Queen were very forgettable. The scenes between the BFG and Sophie became a bore as it went on.

The giant scenes were the more enjoyable just because they had a bit of humour.

But overall this is an instant DVD film. I'm not surprised this hasn't done well at the box office and I don't think Spielberg has he Midas touch anymore in cinema.

More universal appeal - very good addition to the Trek franchise
22 July 2016
When I first found out that Justin Lin was directing the next Star Trek I was very nervous; I was never a huge fan of F&F.

Choosing a franchise like Star Trek, with a very dedicated fan base was dangerous. I watched the series when I was growing up.

What Lin does with Star Trek is actually quite refreshing. I think die hard Trek fans might find it a little too mainstream, but I think Star Trek needed to break into new markets, gain new audiences and this film certainly does that.

I've read a few negative reviews on here asking for the old Star Trek...it's disappointing that for something so ahead of it's time some people prefer to be stuck in the past. This is EXACTLY what the franchise needed and will definitely attract more movie goers to future Star Trek films!

With any space film CGI is usually impressive; with Beyond it's beautiful. Seeing it in IMAX brought all the colours to life. Everything flowed well and particularly during the first 20 minutes I was in awe.

I like how the focus has moved from Kirk and Spock. There's a lot more of the other crew members in this film which was needed after the first two. I really John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin. On that, it'll be interesting to see what they do with Chekov, I don't think Anton will be replaced easily.

Idris Elba is a good cast, although Krall isn't a memorable villain. His back story could have really been built on more but overall, he's a decent addition.

What I think this film does is start to shake off the 'Trek is for geeks' branding that you get if you even say you've seen Star Trek. There's still references to original Star Trek work, but what I liked was that you didn't necessarily need to know the fine detail to get into it.

With a 4th already approved I'd be interested to see where they go. We've had Romulans, Klingons and Krall. Kirk's back story is the talk of the next film. You never know, Resistance could be futile (oh god, I'm crossing my fingers to hear this in a couple of years!) Overall, i'd highly recommend Beyond. Just the right length, great cast and Lin has proved me wrong. Well done.

I'm sat watching this right now...
4 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
and i've wasted 40 minutes trying to get into this film. It's still playing.

This film is your stereotypical American wins all film. In London.

I couldn't tell you anything I remember regarding a plot in the last 40 minutes, except it's been a god awful cheese fest. It's reminiscent of Independence Day, where the President is the hero and somehow everyone protecting him is borderline indestructible, can defeat armies of terrorists with just a knife and then deliver dialogue that makes your skin crawl.

London is barren in a lot of scenes. One of the most crowded cities in Europe and terrorists can walk freely with guns. There's also no explanation for where the ACTUAL police are unless every single one has defected. We are luckily saved in the scene that's just come on where there are some loyal Brits ready to fight. Praise the lord.

Some really awful lines too - my favourite was when one actress said 'it was a trap' - right after the President has been cornered outside St Paul's Cathedral with only her and a Gerard Butlers character to depend on, terrorists/police have fired at them and bombs have gone off in the city. I'm glad she can piece it all together! This is a really disappointing movie. There isn't much else I can say.

An okay addition to the Xmen Franchise...
20 May 2016
Having watched Days of Future Past, which I thought was by far the best X-men film i'd seen, I had high hopes for Apocalypse, regardless of reviews which didn't seem too promising.

I have to disagree with some of the reviews here about this film - it wasn't particularly good. It just slots in with your run of the mill superhero film and won't be remembered when the sequel is released.

Positives:

Some of the action scenes are excellent. CGI seems to have improved again in recent films and Apocalypse is no exception.

I think the casting of Sophie Turner and Alex Shipp is a great move. Being a GOT watcher, I liked her introduction into this franchise. I'd never seen Alex before but that girl can do something different with Storm and move away from the Halle Berry rendition.

Not so Positives:

It's getting difficult to do something really different with these kind of films; there wasn't any shock (for someone that hasn't read the comics). Having seen Civil War recently, this story really lacked that unique edge, whereas it's competition had me from the beginning to the end. Apocalypse as a villain bored me. I won't lie. He could have been so much more exciting! Instead it was just another bad guy wanting to start the world over again.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next with the X-men Franchise. With the end teaser, hopefully it will be something new to keep up with the other Marvel projects that are leading the way.

Long, Long, Long
27 December 2014
I'd seen the adverts but I didn't know quite what to expect with this film.

This is one of those films that actually felt as long as it was. It is typical Ridley Scott; landscape shots galore and epic scenes of, in this case, nature. But that's it. It honestly didn't do anything else. This is a C/D Grade movie.

Christian Bale's acting was alright. The other actors were alright. Sigourney Weaver makes a cameo appearance with the strongest American accent i've heard in Egypt. But again there isn't anything that stands out.

I'm actually struggling to write anything which describes it other than alright!

This is a 'wait until it's released on DVD/TV' movie, similar to Noah and all the other films which try to take religious stories and turn them into a Hollywood blockbuster. I just wish someone would focus on the story rather than grandiose CGI. Maybe the next one...

A tie in to the Lord of the Rings with a thin plot to boot...
13 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Having never read the Hobbit i've enjoyed each of the films so far. It may lack in some of the detail that was seen in the LOTR films but good fun nonetheless.

I was equally as excited to see the last instalment but unfortunately it just didn't quite live up to the hype.

The first hour was entertaining, really building up to what I and everyone in the cinema thought would be a great climax. Then it just loses it. Battle scene after battle scene where you watch Legolas jump from falling stone to falling stone, a huge Orc army which seemed endless suddenly loses when Thorin makes an entrance and later on, another Orc army which is instantly wiped out by eagles. It was either too elaborate or too quick and the plot vanishes from that point on.

Instead what this films ends up being is a half finished end to the Hobbit trilogy and more focus on how to tie into the Lord of the Rings. Whilst visually it may be stunning, the story just doesn't quite cut it.

Massive Michael Bay Critic - Still Enjoyed It
17 July 2014
First of, I really don't like any of Michael Bay's work. I know what to expect - God-awful humour, bikini clad woman and plot holes galore. When I read the reviews it really put me off.

But I actually really enjoyed Age of Extinction.

The lead cast were due for a major overhaul; Michael Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz are the first leads in this series that I wanted to do well. Peltz wasn't leaning over a bike in the blazing heat, she wasn't too good looking to get dirty. Kelsey Grammar and Stanley Tucci play their parts well - even if Tucci is given the comedy makeover by Bay. The CGI is impressive again with a good musical background. Luckily, there's no transformer scrotum like they did in Revenge of the Fallen (god, that scene was the worst i've ever seen).

There are still some stand out cons - Age of Extinction is far too long and ditches an interesting plot half way through for more explosions and clashing metal. You get some of Galvatron but he doesn't really play much of a part but to set up the next film.

Hopefully for the next film, Paramount choose a Director who can carry on a decent story. This film definitely isn't a reboot; Bay is limited in his vision and even though I enjoyed this, another Transformers CGI marathon doesn't do it for me. However it is still better than the last three and a marked improvement in the Bay Hall of Shame.

Believes it's own hype...
16 July 2014
When I first heard of this film I thought, 'Wow, this actually sounds really good'.

Unfortunately this is where I disagree with the majority of critics - this film was not good. It starts off quite well, but from there it becomes far too preachy and I ended up paying more attention to the change in characters appearance than the actual story.

The film is far too long and at times, lets scenes drag on and on, to the point where people in the cinema actually started talking to each other rather than listen to Mason give his overreaching speech on humanity. I don't think i've disliked a lead as much as this one in a long time. In terms of the other cast, they're easily forgettable - the second husband, what happened to him? his kids? I had expected a "Perks of Being a Wallflower" experience but was left disappointed. As great as it was having the same characters for 12 years, 12 years should've produced a much better story than this.

How to make an Impression
26 December 2013
I was a little apprehensive going to see Walter Mitty. I'd read reviews and didn't expect anything too exciting.

Whilst it may not be the most exciting film, it really did make an impression. Underneath and all skits and jokes, the recurring theme of getting out there and living is constant. First of all, as most people have said, the visuals of this film are breathtaking and the people behind the cameras deserve a lot of credit. The soundtrack is also a big plus, really fitting each scene as it carries on.

I've never been a great fan of comedy actors trying to be a little more serious but Ben Stiller did a great job here, using jokes wisely and appropriately, rather than a constant barrage of laughter.

But the best message I got was that, after seeing this film, I need to be a little more exciting. You will see something in yourself that resembles a piece of Walter Mitty and that's what I liked most about this film. Everyone needs to live a little more, no matter who you are.

If you've read the critics reviews, don't read any more. Go and enjoy a really good film.

Averagely funny mid-week entertainment with a few yawns...
11 February 2013
Okay, so imagine you've just finished work, got home and need something to provide a little bit of background noise whilst sat with your laptop on brushing up on what's happened in the world, whilst thinking about what to have for dinner. This film is perfect for that.

This film isn't not funny. It's just not THAT funny. Quirky bits here and there, but once you've heard one sex pun, you've heard 'em all. It never really gets going and half way through the film I could tell I wasn't the only one sat in the cinema thinking this is slowly turning into a bit of a bore.

There are a smattering of funny areas, particularly the Christmas Party scene, but other than that, it's your run-of-the-mill Brit Rom-Com that doesn't really come to life.

Advice? Wait until it turns up on Sky Movies. Then you can judge for free.
