The Fog (2005)
Who allowed this
First off, I'm a massive fan of the original, which isn't 'really' that scary but is a great and well executed story.
So, why it was felt to take the original film and 'make it relevant' to a new audience I'll never know.
It's as if they took the original plot and blended it with every 20-something movie ever made and expected to bring something new?
They've simply managed to remove all of the best bits and substitute them for cliched angst and lousy acting, and not quite there special effects.
In reality they could've taken 'exactly' the same plot of the original, transposed it to more upto date actors and settings, and had a reasonable film... even I agree the original has a certain 80s oddness to it when looked at through the eyes of the next century.
Nobody (2021)
Don't believe the haters!
I was surprised at the negative reviews for this film, for one thing I don't believe the film sells itself as anything that it isn't.
Do you like action, do you like dark humour, have you ever wanted to just get your own back but haven't because it's real life and you're a good person? That's where this film steps in, it's make believe, but sometimes, just sometimes wouldn't it be great...
I imagine those who've called it over the top and unrealistic probably also spend their time playing games where they're enacting exactly the action seen in the film, so what's the issue?
The plot may be predictable, but it almost needs to be, because you want it to roll in a certain way, you don't want to be guessing, just roll along with it.
The actors look as though they had a cracking time, Christopher Lloyd got some good action, where he could've been a side character, but so good that he was allowed to off some bad guys.
I reckon if you like any film where there's some fighting and some guns, and let's face it that's a lot of films, then I'd suspend some belief and give this a watch!
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
It's so dark!
As films of this genre go, it's 'okay', there's aliens, guns, action and good selection of disposable characters; but for the majority of the film it's sooo dark as to be impossible to see what's happening. This might have been fine when shown in the cinema, but it doesn't translate to the smaller screen, and this is being viewed on a large tv, in a darkened room, with the curtains drawn.
Without dropping any spoilers, it ends with a distinct X-Files feel, and an interesting nod to future directions and previous films.
It's worth a watch if you like this sort of films, and I can see there's still room to spare in the franchise.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Kiss Of Death
I really enjoyed the series, I mean, there's not much I make time to watch these days, but this was one of those shows.
I've not seen the anime, and having drifted through the Reddit sub, I'm not sure I want to be in the same room with that amount of impotent rage.
That I liked this show points to why it was cancelled, or maybe it was the screaming, overly vocal anime fans that scared Netflix into canning it.
Sad times, RIP another great show!
Cats (2019)
No vaccine for this.
As I write this we're slowing winning the battle of COVID, but having just watched this film, I feel the lockdowns, the isolation, the mental stress were for nothing... I have lost the will to continue...
Space Force (2020)
No, really I like it a lot
I'm surprised by the number of negative reviews, as I find it warmly comedic and very on point. I wonder if people are expecting more due to the stature of the actors involved.
If people are expecting it to be a comedic documentary then it simply doesn't exist in that universe, and to be fair currently I'd prefer the space force universe to the one we have at the moment.
The Hatton Garden Job (2017)
Nice story, good characters, lousy sound mix.
It's only vaguely based on the true story, but the plot is good, and the acting is okay! Nice to see the old boys getting some credit for a change.
There's a lot of 'what could've been' but it doesn't detract from a good script and you genuine warm to the characters.
However, the sound mix is awful and ruins an otherwise quite good sound track - simply the music is too loud and overpowers the actors.
What remains is the fact that this is a true story and they really did get away with it... for a bit at least!
Ghost Wars (2017)
Well balanced and different
The first episode only just caught my attention, I thought it was going to be a another angst, misery driven loss; however I made it to episode 2 and now I'm hooked. I like the balanced mix of sci-if and paranormal, plus it keeps you guessing, you don't know where it's going but you kind of feel you're part of the journey. While dark and brooding, the characters have depth and mesh well together. Plus, it's timed well enough that you need to see the next episode!
