children of men
9 July 2007
I have to mark this movie for science fiction. No matter how bad the world situation is, societies do not collapse because of illegal immigration. Come on-the world's youngest person is beaten to death? When Kee has her baby in that filthy room, and they go on the run again, everybody who hears the baby cry acts like it's music to their ears, then they go right on fighting as soon as they are past. There's no reverence for life. I thought it was a bit scary to find white supremacists directly in charge of caged immigrants. Or crazed evangelicals loaded down with assault weapons. No wonder the society broke down. Those people rendered the government troops mostly ineffective. When a country can no longer provide security and basic services, the stage is set for anarchy. The movie reminded me of 1984. Regardless of the quality acting, the plot was sketchy and the story line was uneven. Even the chaos of war has a certain amount of organization to it.

Refreshing!!!
10 August 2006
I watched the Osbornes for awhile. Flashy dysfunctional is tiring.

I think Gene Simmon's Family Jewels is a hoot! The family is decent and loving, with nice friends and relatives. They run their own household, and the kids go to public school. It's easy to see the wheels turning in Gene's head: Marketing, public relations, investments, his rock star image played carefully- He colors his hair, remember?. And, Kiss Demon or not, the guy's 57, and his love and family are very important to him. Some think his family is so conventional it's boring. We'll see. Others said some unkind things about Shannon and were unforgiving about her past. Fooey on them, I think she's fun. It was inevitable that many would compare 'Family Jewels' to the "Osbournes" There's nothing wrong with a family that doesn't have substance abuse problems, or doesn't drink a whole lot. This way we get to know the family a little bit better. There's no sustaining entertainment in drug use or alcoholism, and any child who has to grow up in those conditions deserves better.

Pacific Heights is Educational
7 January 2005
Pacific Heights is required viewing in all Apartment Management courses in San Diego County. It is a chilling tale of decent but uneducated and unprepared new owners with a dream unknowingly up against a seasoned player in the professional renter game. This viewing requirement is one of the tools used to introduce starry-eyed management newcomers to the harsh and not-so-easily apparent world of the sick, the dangerous and the sue-happy portion of the rental market who will try to get the management stripped of all their personal assets and possessions, fired and possibly jailed, who work diligently to get the owner's property away from him/her, and who have no objection to going down as long as they can take others with them. Great movie.
