Did it work for me? Yes. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie despite all character stuff and plot holes (these have already been discussed in other reviews so i'll skip it).
Would I take my girlfriend to watch this movie? Or my parents? No way.
The problem in this case is the feeling that I think I'd feel embarrassed about watching the movie or admitting myself to enjoy it. The disrespectful way of portraying the two female main characters is just something I really find hard to deal with... or let's say, hard to argument in favor for.
One character is as cold as ice, superficially cruel and hardly likable in whatsoever way, but still too weak to really be a convincing villain.
The other is a religiously clouded archaeologist who gets pregnant with an alien, operates herself with a cesarean section and then becoming some sort of Ripley kind of "last Woman standing".
Both these female characters are somehow reduced down to a level that makes them look quite stupid in a few ways, especially in a sexist kind perspective. The "I can't have a baby, but let's shag to make me feel better" motif is somehow paralleling the "let's shag so you have proof I'm not a robot" motif.
I can picture myself sitting next to my girlfriend in the cinema and apologizing and slapping myself in the car home.
But: I was not in that situation and this enabled me to have some wicked fun watching this chaos. In a way it even feels believable because the way things go wrong and get out of control are so random and seemingly unnecessary that, no matter the plot hole criticism, it really follows Murphy's law quite accurately.
And: this movie is really beautifully cinematographed. I liked the beautiful scenes in the beginning, the haunting dark atmosphere of the Icelandic set, the richly detailed 3D CGI and space scenes. It is a firework, marvelous and colorful.
1 star for Fassbenders good and likable performance
1 star for the beautiful set and landscape
1 star for the dark atmosphere
1 star for a very great and haunting beginning
1 star for a spectacular finale
1 star for the being a plainly enjoyable movie even when I can't admit that to people I still want to be on talking terms with afterward ;)
