The Legend of Hercules (2014)
Guess Im in the %1 group....I loved it!!
Everyone is gonna hate me, but I loved this movie and it took me completely by surprise how good it was. Historically accurate ....not a bit. I saw very little of the Hercules legend in this movie that was correct. But who is to say for sure how Hercules really lived his life. Everyone always focuses on his powers and gifts from his Greek father who is a god and expects him to go around slaughtering the town, beating up all the baddies, and advancing his prowess and legends. Maybe there was more to Hercules. Dare I say he had the feelings and emotions of a mortal man, that he had a true love and was consumed by his feelings for her. That he would be a good man who would do what was right and stand up for justice, and just maybe in those times of need he drew upon something that was more than he realized he had. Does there need to be magic and awe in every line, in every paragraph.
I know nothing of this director and I don't try to be a witty reviewer or big philosophical critic of movies. I do know that in this version of Hercules, I saw a real hero who was just a man, yet more, and I could more readily believe that this version of Hercules existed than the mythical legend most of society believes in.
For those of you who haven't seen it, you have to go into it with an open mind. The point of this movie really has nothing to do with any of the Herculean legends we all know. If your looking for that, I guarantee you that you will hate this movie.
Beauty and the Beast (2012)
Just watched first episode...I'm hooked!!
WARNING!!! SMALL SPOILERS ABOUT THE ORIGINAL 80'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST TV SHOW. NO SPOILERS ABOUT THIS NEW BEAUTY AND THE BEAST SHOW.
I am going to also reiterate what others have said about comparing this show to the original. The key to liking this show if you have seen the original show is to view this like a whole new show. Nobody will EVER do the beauty the specific way that Linda Hamil did, and even the Vincent in the old 80's show was completely different from this Vincent. Beauty, played by actress Kristin, can hold her own. Beast and how it seems he was created are also completely different from the 80's show and beast is basically hot in this show, despite disfigurements. The only thing that seems kind of strange is that they have the same names as the 80's show.
I just got done watching the first episode. I bought this at the store and almost decided to return it unwatched because I generally don't like detective shows OR the idea of "beast" being created instead of being born that way. I also read reviews on here and it didn't sound like I would like it. I'm hooked though and ready to watch the next episode!!!
I think the chemistry is off the chain!! There is a lot of non verbal chemistry and talking with body language and in that way, it stays very true to the original beauty and the beast. Also, like others have said, don't expect them to hop into bed by episode three. Remember, she's a beauty, not a tramp. This idea also stays true to the original 80's show where no kissing happened until late season 1 or early season 2 and the thought of the original beauty getting pregnant by the beast and having "relations" was greatly protested back then. There is something even more appealing to be said for watching attraction grow slowly and not getting instant gratification, something I think modern television has kind of lost.
I would say keep your mind open, watch this as a whole new show (if you saw the original), and give it a chance. The actress Kristin does a great job and I have loved her in basically every TV show movie she has ever been in.
P.S. If you were a fan of smallville and your wondering if you can watch her in this show after seeing smallville and being able to separate the two characters, don't worry. She does a great job of being a completely separate person in this show compared to the role she played as Lana Lang on smallville. I'm not reminded of smallville at all when I watch her in this show.
Elysium (2013)
Visually stunning..storyline fell kinda flat
This movie had good actors, good acting, great special affects, and stunning landscapes, but it just didn't do it for me. The plot was slow to take off and I found the plot rather boring. I loved everything about this movie except the storyline and I left the theatres scratching my head as to why I didn't like this movie.
I never liked District 9 and this movie has the same kind of style to it, so maybe that's why I didn't like it. Matt Damon as a sci fi hero...I found that very interesting and was hoping I would like it, but I think Matt should stick to the genres that he has done in the past. He's great at drama, great at spy/military/soldier type movies. I like him in a lot of the movies he does, and honestly, his acting was great in this movie. I just didn't like the story. And Matt looks weird with a shaved head.(girls perspective) I think that a lot of hard core sci fi fans will like this movie and I'm recommending it would be worth going to see, just to check it out and see if you like it. If you hated District 9, I probably wouldn't go see this movie as it has a very similar feel to it.
I gave this movie a rating of 5 because I hated the story line.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)
Uh...second movie messy and kinda boring
Having seen the first Percy Jackson movie, I kind of enjoyed it. Yes, it's watered down Greek mythology that isn't correct at all really. I'm 34, so old enough to know REAL Greek mythology. But the first movie had some things going for it....floppy hair boy finds out he's the son of a god, quest ensues, teeny bopper love story, honestly I like the first movie. It's NOT clash of the titans, but it was good.
This movie, by comparison was kind of all over the place. The girl that is the half blood of Ares is down right annoying and I don't know why they had her character, as it took away from the interactions that Percy Jackson had with Anna Beth, the girl from the first movie. The plot was kinda dumb, and as the previous poster mentioned, is a rip off from Jason and Argonauts with the Cyclops and the golden fleece added in there. AND, the ending was wrapped up but it was clear there was going to be a third movie and I thought the last 5 minutes of the movie were just plain dumb.
One more thing...I know it's just aesthetics, but lets face it, we like watching movies partially because we find the actors or actresses pleasing to look at. I HATED Percy Jacksons hair cut and I also hated the hair color change for Anna Beth. It was SO distracting, it actually took away from the movie, as I kept staring at it. They should have kept similar hair styles from the first movie.
To sum up, Hollywood has now ruined ANOTHER movie for me by making a sequel that didn't come close to being as good as the first one. Sorry Percy, but I'm gonna have to ditch you on the roadside. If I want Greek mythology, I'll watch Clash of the Titans, Hercules, or Xena, as that's WAY more accurate and entertaining.
Oblivion (2013)
It was okay... nothing stood out though
Just went out and bought this on Blu Ray, having not seen it in the theatre. This movie was okay, not super great, but not bad either. I would be just fine with never seeing it again. I'm a HUGE sci fi and fantasy geek, but this movie didn't really do it for me. The plot was VERY slow to progress and I kept wondering when things were gonna get going. Honestly, the last 25 minutes of the movie were pretty great, but everything before that was kind of boring. The movie actually had an ending that I liked, which kind of surprised me.
Other posters are right, this movie smacks a little bit of the matrix and a few other well known sci fi movies, but nothing really stood out. Everyone said Avatar was a rip off of Dances with Wolves, but that movie was brilliant. John Carter was considered a flop, but that is one of my favorite movies and every time I watch it I love it more and more. This movie is kind of "uh...I've seen it, time to move on".
My advice, get this on redbox or at the library and see if you like it before you go out and buy it. I now own a $25 movie that I have no desire to ever watch again.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Epic visually appealing scenes, but totally messy boring movie
My title says it all.....I tried following the multiple generational, multi century story line that involved about a dozen people, but I ended up getting bored and stopped the movie about halfway through. This movie takes TOO long to come together. Maybe if I would of stayed till the end, I would of got it, but it was too boring for me. Romance that wasn't appearing, action that wasn't happening, story lines that weren't giving any indication where they were going and I was half way through the movie already....
I wouldn't recommend this movie, to boring and complicated and completely a mess. That's my two cents anyway.
Courage Mountain (1990)
Gorgeous mountain life story of a simpler time!!
I'm 34 and I can't remember exactly when I first saw this movie, but I probably saw it right around when it came to video. I had never watched Heidi before, so really had no experience with the "Heidi" story. This movie could not have been a better introduction and I have never wanted to watch another Heidi version since. I love this movie and we have a family tradition of watching it every Christmas. I also pull it out of the vault and watch it at ANY time of the year because I love it so much.
This movie not only has beautiful shots and scenery in it, but shows that a young woman or any woman for that matter can be beautiful being her natural self. Heidi is gorgeous, naturally beautiful without artifice, and very self confident and sure of herself. She lives her life simply and doesn't know any other way, and even when she finds out that her lifestyle is considered "old fashioned", she doesn't let it get her down.
The story line in this movie is simple, yet tugs at the heart strings. There is adventure, the awkwardness of new experiences, the buddings of first love, new friends to be made, and challenges to be overcome, all the while amidst the back drop of snowy caped mountains and rustic villages.
If you are a fan of period romances, westerns, frontier type movies, or just a simple romantic at heart, then I would give this movie a try. You might be surprised that hidden underneath that unassuming title and DVD graphics is a true gem.
Ohh..did I mention, TOTALLY kid friendly and morally appropriate!!!
Teen Wolf (2011)
NOT twilight, or vampire diaries, or True Blood....something different!!
I confess....I like twilight...AND I'm in my 30's. This show is NOT twilight and like some other reviewers have said, doesn't have all the cheesy cliché ooee-ggooey romance crap going on in it 99% of the time, which is a good thing. On the other end of the spectrum, this isn't TRUE BLOOD either, which is a 24 hour a day porno fest with blood dripping all over the place and NOT for the faint of heart.
I'm old enough to have been around for the original Teen Wolf movie and while this TV show is different from that, I think this show maintains the geeky, kind cool dude, "oh, by the way, I'm a werewolf" idea that the original movie had going. These aren't 'just about to graduate" high schoolers", so the sex and romance is toned down and more focus is put on going from "akward teen to cool dude and getting cool powers in the process too" idea. I like his geeky friend, I liked the girl that plays the female love interested in the movie, I liked all the characters in this show. YES, the show is a little bit teeny bopper and immature for someone in their 30's to be watching, but it brings back the good fun I had watching the original movie....Plus the actors and actresses aren't SUPER sophisticated or SUPER sexy, so I can actually believe that they are normal school kids and that tends to help with the believability of the plot.
I just went out and bought season 2 on DVD and I'm gonna have a Teen Wolf marathon, so it should be a fun geek fest...haven't seen season two, so I hope they kept things going!! If your looking for super bloody or super sexy, this might not be the show for you. If your looking for "boy meets girl crush" tossed in with a little werewolf bite, and voila!!, you have geeky guy who is suddenly cool, has a romantic life, and gets to fight the bad guys, then I would give this show a try.
Life of Pi (2012)
Slow boring movie and smacks of new age
First off, let me just say that I am NOT some religious nut. I a have seen the twilight movies and probably a bunch of other movies that I shouldn't be watching. I'm an adult and can sift through a movie and take away what I want and watch the rest just for entertainment value, even though I AM a Christian.
That being said....this movie takes about five different religions and mixes them all together and basically says, it's okay to believe in anything you want, that everything is ALL the same and you can pick apart different ideas and make your own religion. I found that idea very disturbing and I wouldn't even mention it, except for the fact that they push this super spiritual mixture mess throughout the entire movie. I would have loved this movie if they would of left the spiritual voodoo out of the movie. Make it a simple story of overcoming the odds and finding a bonding relationship with an exotic animal that not many people will ever understand, let alone come that close to. I could believe and even respect that. Some people has special talents and gifts with animals and can understand them in ways most people can't, and the animals reciprocate that back.
Enough said about the religious stuff...let me just say that the movie was pretty slow. I know that one of the main characters(aka..the tiger) doesn't have dialogue and so you have to rely on the animals body language to do the talking for you. There was one part towards the end of the movie(don't want to give it away) where I thought I was having an acid trip, the idea was so ridiculous and strange. I know this is supposed to be a deep spiritual and slightly(and I emphasize slightly) philosophical type movie, but that wasn't what I was expecting to get out of this movie and towards the end, it just got ridiculous. Not to mention, I hated the way things ended up with the boy and the tiger and the ending of the actual movie was very boring and anticlimactic.
I like deep...deep thoughts, ideas...I can do deep in my sleep, but this movie was just weird on every level and is honestly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. This COULD have been a really great movie if they would of kept it simple...boy bonds with tiger and overcomes all odds...no mumbo jumbo wonky stuff.
That's my two cents anyway...
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (2012)
WOW!! It gets WAY better the second time around!!
I can't believe I am writing a review in favor of this movie, seeing as a couple of hours ago I was determined to not even bother renting or buying this movie ever!! I LOVED twilight and that movie wasn't even on my radar when it first came out. I had never heard of it. All of the rest of the twilight movies up until this last movie had their ups and downs and I never really loved them the way I loved the first movie. What I discovered though is that once they came out to DVD and I watched them again, any issues I had previously had about all of the previous movies were dissolved.
I have NEVER read any of the books, so I knew absolutely nothing about what was going to happen in this movie, just like I never knew what was happening in any of the previous movies.
I just got done watching this movie, as it just came out at midnight on DVD. I wasn't expecting much, as I didn't really care for it when it came out in the theaters and I saw it opening night at midnight, along with all the other teeny boppers. All I can say is WOW, this movie is REALLY great!! If you watched this in the theaters and hated it, but kinda liked the other twilight movies, give this movie another chance and try seeing it again. I alternated between cheesy grins and crying the entire movie and I felt like it really moved me. This movie ISN'T for a lot of people and I will be the first to kinda agree that if you pick apart the movie or the actors acting abilities, it's kinda low quality. You have to go beyond all of that and see this movie for what it truly is....an eternal love story that defies all odds, shows a mothers unwavering love, and can touch your soul if you let it. I know everyone goes on and on about the bad acting in all of the twilight movies, but the one thing I have always thought was FANTASTIC about these movies is the non-verbal acting. I think it is a lot harder to portray anguish, heartache, love, and burning desire with just a look or two then it is to read some lines. I have always felt that Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson especially were great at doing that and all three of the main actors had a chemistry on screen that I thought was very believable.
I'm sure everyone is going to pick this review apart and I will be the first to admit that I am a 30 something who is kind of embarrassed to like these movies. I don't gush about Edward or Jacob and I am not in love with the movies because I get to see these guys half naked on the screen. I DON"t have Edward posters on my wall, I don't post on the forums or talk incessantly about this movie or the actors in it. I don't pick apart the actors personal lives and judge them. I just really appreciate the depth of love that can be shown in these movies and I thought this was a VERY unexpected and beautiful way to end this series. I will be going out to buy this movie this morning, because I believe that this movie deserves my money and time.
