Silent Night (2023)

All Build Up and Little Reward
28 December 2023
I'm a big fan of revenge movies. I can forgive them many plot holes or errors.

But when you go to watch a movie of this type you expect maybe a half hour of set up and then the action and carnage ensues.

This movie was still in the set up stage over and hour into it.

That's fine for certain movies, but not for this genre.

When a movie is billed as an action/revenge film, no one wants to spend over an hour watching the protagonist learn basic action movie skills.

We want action and killing and revenge. We don't want to watch three quarters of the movie to get there. That's just a fact of this demographic for this type of movie.

If you want to make a slow moving character study then make one, but don't lie to us and try to trick us into watching it by misrepresenting it. .

Entertaining Violent Nonsense
5 August 2023
You can tell from the title, or at least I could, that this movie is meant to be tongue in cheek. Come on. Fear the Night. It's a terrible title.

This movie is violence for the sake of violence. It's ridiculous story lines for the sake of violence. It's a wonderful, funny, campy 90 minutes of darkly comical gratuitous violence.

The movie is categorized incorrectly, which is attracting the wrong viewers. It's not an action/thriller movie. It's a horror satire.

But if you are entertained by movies with silly plots, ridiculous scenarios and a heaping helping of killing and mayhem, then you will like this movie as much as I did.

Not Horror or Thriller
5 July 2023
I tried to watch this because of the intriguing premise and the positive reviews. Personally, I was bored. Nothing interesting was happening. At the 20 minute mark I gave up and stopped.

British movies move at a different pace which just doesn't work for me. To call this movie a horror or a thriller seems inaccurate.

Too much talk and not enough action. That perhaps speaks more to my American attention span than to the quality of the film.

I just found it dull and uninteresting. I was not compelled to stick around to see if anything exciting would happen.

If you're going to bill something as horror or thriller it needs to deliver on that promise. This does not.

A Cool Movie, but It's Miscategorized and Has a Misleading Title
28 May 2014
This movie is not sci-fi and it's not an end of the world disaster movie as the title seems to suggest. I think its abysmal rating is because people are going into it thinking it's a certain kind of end of the world, doom and destruction movie and then they find out it's not that at all. Not by a long shot.

This is a romance/drama film that tries its darnedest to be deep.

This is one of those interconnected drama movies along the veins of: Crash, Magnolia, The Air I Breathe and Happiness.

So if you're into that sort of style, plotting and character driven storytelling you'll almost definitely like this. If not, you'll most likely find it tedious, boring and depressing.

A Good Sci Fi Story
3 August 2013
I know that this movie was not generally liked and is considered a flop. But I quite enjoyed it. There were about 20 minutes of non action setup to the plot at the beginning and then it took off running and never stopped.

Will Smith is not prominent in the movie. It is basically a vehicle for his son. But the plot was fast-paced and exciting. And I thought the kid was good in his role.

Their strange accents were a little distracting and the spaceship effects were less than stellar. However, the action on the planet and all the predatory creatures were exciting.

I think even though it tried, the movie lacked heart somehow. But as a fan of post-apocalyptic sci-fi this movie was very enjoyable for me. I easily liked it as much as JJ Abrams first Star Trek feature. In some ways I liked it more. Not for everyone. But comparing it to Tom Cruises' Oblivion, I liked this movie a bunch more. I wanted Oblivion to be 20 minutes shorter. I wanted this movie to be 15 minutes longer.
