The Fall Guy (2024)
1/10
Just plain bad
26 May 2024
This is the worst movie I've seen in a long time. It's a snooze fest, totally boring. Deceptive marketing lures you in by showing you almost all the action in the previews. After the first sixty minutes I almost stopped watching but out of respect for Ryan and Emily I thought, "Maybe the second half is better." WRONG!

There was maybe six minutes of action in the first hour. In the second hour I stopped caring. I kept fast forwarding it bit by bit to see if anything worthwhile would happen.

The best part were the credits. I was glad that they gave the real Fall Guy, Lee Majors a cameo and Heather Thomas as well.

One thing is absolutely certain, I won't ever watch this movie again.

Mediocre at best
26 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a sign that these monster movies are going the way of many of the MCU movies after End Game, which means they're not very good.

All that Iwi stuff seems contrived. The way too human traits given to the apes is absolutely ridiculous. The Dan Stevens character as a veterinarian whose training just happened to include dentistry on a giant ape and he just so happened to have a giant tooth on hand is beyond silly. In addition to that, he travels to hollow earth in the same ship as everyone else but when Kong needs medical attention again, his vet vehicle just happens to be down there where a giant mechanical glove probably a prototype when Tony Stark was designing Veronica, coincidentally is also down there.

Brian Tyree Henry's character is there for comedic relief and nothing else. This was a poorly written movie and if they should do another one it better be a lot better than this mess or they're going to lose their fan base but if that should happen they'll probably just reboot the whole damn thing.

Huh?
25 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I begin? Horrible writing for one. Randall Wallace attempted to many times to be overly sentimental that it turned out to be embarrassingly mushy. Some of the lines made me cringe particularly when DiCaprio as Louis was trying to impress Christine.

This is my least favorite of DiCaprio's performances. He was miscast. Who in their right mind is going to believe that after wearing an iron mask for 6 years your face which hasn't been cleaned in 6 years has absolutely no blemishes and hardly any beard growth? Come on, at least give us some pimples.

Gabriel Byrne is the only one who did a fine job with what he was given but it's not the fault of the other actors that they were given so little to work with. Jeremy Irons as Aramis was ok until the scene to break out Phillipe from prison. Who's going to believe that he actually had a full grown man underneath his clothing? Not realistic at all. It didn't even look right.

I love the Three Musketeers but don't wait until the last 10 minutes to give me swordplay. That's what they were known for.

The best line in the whole movie was uttered by Edward Atterton who played Lieutenant Andre when he said " Magnificent valor. " He said even more with his eyes while saying that line.

I need to go watch a real Three Musketeers movie to cleanse me from this mess.

Not bad at all
20 April 2024
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Well written, it has you guessing all the time. The comedy is a bit over the top but I think that was intentional, it's campy.

Every role was played to perfection. No one was miscast. The comedic timing was on point by all the actors. The one that surprised me the most was Milana. She was the only one I was familiar with because of the AT&T commercials. She was so cute. I hope she gets offered more roles. She definitely has some comedic chops.

All n all it was a nice twist on the werewolf genre. I knew nothing going in. I was expecting a true werewolf horror movie and got a very entertaining horror/comedy. I hope they make a sequel or prequel. It deserves one.

I Kill Giants (2017)
7/10
Better than expected
9 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I thought I would be watching a full on fantasy flick about killing giants only to discover it ain't that. It is a good movie reminding us of how fragile some of us are when the going gets tough. Some of us have a hard time coping and like so many we invent a world where we come out on top, winners, and heroes.

I'm not familiar with the comics but I read where the comics teach young kids how to deal with tragedy. Even adults need to learn this because for a lot of adults, drifting off into fantasy is replaced with drugs and alcohol or we just try to mentally run away from our problems and hope they'll go away on their own so we won't have to confront them.

This movie is worth the watch and Madison Wolfe did a fantastic job as Barbara. The only question I have is since it's Barbara's fantasy world where only she sees the giants then why does her friend Sophia notice what is quite clearly the humungous footprint of a giant in the forest?

Go ahead and give it a try. It may even bring a tear to your eye.

Worth Your Time
28 March 2024
This was a very good installment to the Bourne franchise. Jeremy Renner is always good in anything he does and so is Rachel Weisz. The supporting cast rounds out nicely.

The story apparently happens around the time of the last Bourne movie which explains more or less what happened to Pamela Landy which I was wondering about after watching Jason Bourne. They make it seem as if Ezra Kramer and Noah Vosen actually got away with it while completely discrediting Pamela Landy. One must assume that in their efforts to wipe the slate clean that something will eventually happen to all personnel even remotely connected to Blackbriar and Treadstone.

This is a very good movie and the fight scenes are top notch. Aaron Cross would make a perfect successor to Jason Bourne. It's a shame there won't be any more Aaron Cross movies. At least not with Jeremy Renner. His accident and the fact that 12 years have gone by render him probably incapable of handling the physicality of the role.

Noah (2014)

Just plain bad
8 March 2024
Worst Russell Crowe movie ever and I'm sure the other actors wish they could take this one off their resume's as well. What was their source material because it certainly wasn't the bible?

I understand taking some creative/literary license but this went way too far. If you're going to make a biblical movie then you must know that the majority of your audience are going to be Christians. You know, the church going bible reading kind that know truth from fiction. This movie disappoints on every level.

According to Noah those in the ark are the last of mankind and when the youngest dies that's it. Well then what was the point in even saving them? Ham and Japheth have no wives, Tubal Cain who murdered Noah's father when Noah was just a boy, sneaks onto the ark and doesn't appear any older looking than Noah.

There are way too many discrepancies to mention and they aren't really worth the time to write about and neither is watching this travesty.

Don't waste your time...
8 February 2024
... with this dribble. It wasn't anything like any of the other marvel movies. It lacked excitement, it lack suspense, just plain bad all the way around. I blame the writing and the director.

When hiring actors make sure there is at least some measure of chemistry between them. Brie Larson looked uninterested and it wouldn't surprise me if she declines to continue the role. Samuel Jackson was a shadow of the tough authoritative Nick Fury were accustomed too. The other actors were so bad they don't deserve to be mentioned by name. I will say that Zawe Ashton was down right pathetic. In her defense it was probably like the others a gross miscasting.

If this wasn't the worst Marvel movie to date it's definitely top 3.

Should Have Been Better
7 February 2024
The DC universe just can't compete with the MCU and I don't know why. As a kid in the sixties, the two most popular super heroes were Superman and Batman and maybe that's why the other super heroes just aren't taken to serious.

Jason Momoa is a good Aquaman but give him more to seek his teeth into instead of cheesy one liners thrown in with CGI action. The brotherly love at the end was very predictable. Even I could figure out that a cheeseburger was going to be in there somewhere.

I don't know. Maybe these comic book stories have reached there limit but if they don't start putting out better stuff the losses will be huge at the box office. Aquaman would have been better off placing a call to his Justice League buddy Superman and everything would have been resolved in no time at all.

Tangerine and Lemon...
5 December 2023
...steal the show in this one. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry are absolutely sublime in this movie. Every character is perfectly cast and everyone played their part beautifully yet Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry stand out above the others. I'm hoping someone will write a prequel for Tangerine and Lemon.

They have such wonderful chemistry. I don't know if Taylor-Johnson speaks naturally with a cockney accent or not but if he doesn't then his accent is spot on.

It's not very often that I will watch a movie again because of a particular character but this is one of those movies for me.

It's obvious that they're worth the price of the ticket but so is everyone else to be honest. It's a fun movie, never boring, with a bunch of little twists and turns that keep you engaged.

The Pacific (2010)

War Is Brutal...
21 November 2023
... to put it lightly. I still like Band Of Brothers better because you got to hear from the real men that were there. It's about a company of men whereas The Pacific is primarily about three guys.

It's hard to compare the fighting but I think the guys that fought the Pacific war had it harder because a lot of it was in the jungle and how the Japanese fought. Germans don't keep running straight into machine gun fire.

You definitely become attached to these guys just like in Band Of Brothers. You want them all to live and go home to their families. You feel their longing for home and admire their desire to serve.

It is a very good series that will at times put a tear in your eye and at others times make you proud of the brave souls that fought and died so we can have the freedoms we have today.

Spooked: Ireland (2023– )

Nothin New Here
1 November 2023
Watched first episode only because I'm Irish and any future viewings will be for the Irish castles etc...

Chris, the medium, is as unconvincing as a real estate agent trying to sell igloos to Eskimos. He's just a bad actor. None of the people associated with this episode even looked the slightest bit scared.

Their equipment look like cheap toys. Why do ghosts need modern day tech so this group of fakes can hear them? Every scene where something paranormal supposedly happens can clearly be manipulated including the opening and closing of a door which only they saw.

A female ghost that can grope a man, children whose giggles and footsteps can be heard but never when they're in the room where their presence is most keenly felt. If the horny ghost can grope and children can open and close doors, here's a novel idea, why don't you leave a pen and paper down on a table and ask them to write their issues down for them to see.

This is just another show that's taking advantage of the gullible. You're better off watching a horror film. At least you'll see something.

What A Waste!
31 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The only possession I'm interested in now is in what was possessing the film makers? This movie doesn't serve the original one at all.

Nothing original regarding the demon possession. It's the same derivative dribble as in all possession movies.

I don't get the exorcism block party. Hey everyone, come on over and let's get these demons out of these poor girls. That's not how the church would actually do it.

Since it's God who triumphs over the devil, I found it disconcerting that the church going family lose their daughter but the unbelieving father keeps his daughter.

They should have built more into what actually led to the possession in the first place. Was there a demon out there in the woods just waiting for some unsuspecting prey?

If you watch this make sure to watch something else right after to wash your brain of this mess.

Poor Mel
3 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I know he doesn't need the money so why is Mel Gibson going the way of Willis, Seagal, Van Damme, Cage, et al and making straight to DVD/streaming movies? Did he lose a bet? He actually replaced Bruce Willis for this one. He must owe a lot of favors.

The movie is very predictable especially the ending. There is so much that's just plain wrong. You have a man that's bleeding to death so the doctor and the cop have to go to another apartment for supplies. After finding the supplies and tending to the less wounded cop whom she shot, she takes the time to make goo goo eyes with him? There's a man who needs serious medical attention according to your diagnosis! I don't want her as my doctor unless it's for turn your head and cough.

How does a guy who is clearly taller and heavier than Emile Hirsch fit into his shirt? And how does a guy get away with keeping a dangerous animal presumably a tiger in an apartment? The animal attacked the owner requiring hospitalization so just when would he be able to go in and clean the litterbox? Near the end when it jumped out to kill the bad guy, I thought it was a pitbull.

Trust me, save yourself the time and find something else.

I Wish You Were Kidding but...
2 October 2023
... this is bad as in not good at all. If you want to waste ninety minutes of your life then by all means watch this pooh pooh kaka.

Nothing and I mean nothing has you engaging with the characters. There's nothing to make you feel any sentiment at all to them. Tom Felton is just as annoying as Malfoy.

It's not scary or even suspenseful. I've had poops more exciting than this dribble and that's as derivative as one can get.

Aside from all the cliches, how in the world does Ashely Greene's character get inside an obviously closed Costco? The parking lot is empty clearing indicating it's not open and she gets in just to close herself inside a tent? What was that all about?

All I can say for Todd Lincoln is I hope it gets better from here because it can't possibly get any worse... I hope.

Halloween (1978)

Every Halloween
29 September 2023
Every Halloween actually the majority of October, I consider it to be my horror movie month. I watch as many as I can. It amazes me that I'm still drawn to these types of movies considering they're low budget, and filled with actors and directors who were pretty much unknown at the time.

I'm still very entertained even with the cheesy special effects, bad acting in most cases, and poorly written scripts. One thing for sure is that the only music/tune more haunting is Tubular Bells from The Exorcist.

Unlike the past where I always wanted the boogeyman to die, I now, (as if anything is going to change), pull for the bad guy. Why? Because the stupidity on display in every character deserves death. Well, it makes it a bit more entertaining in a humorous way. Horror movies are just a lot of dumb fun.

A Good Finale
31 August 2023
I certainly understand the concern actors have regarding the use of AI and image likeness. If you can make an actor look as young as they did with Harrison Ford, then there's no telling how far this technology can go. I mean during the train fight going however fast a train could travel back then, Indiana Jones' hat didn't even fly off.

When I read that they were going to do this movie my first reaction was that no one is going to believe that someone that old is going to be able to physically stand up to the demands of the role. For crying out loud, Indy's legs looked like they were about to snap in two. But, then again, what hasn't been exaggerated in this franchise.

It's worth the watch for Indy fans and it is a nice sendoff. I always find these kind of movies sad because we're saying goodbye for good.

Mega Dumb Mega Stupid
25 August 2023
Please don't make a third one. Was it supposed to be this campy? This definitely was not one of Jason Statham's best. Where does one begin to list all the stupid plot holes, inconsistencies, and just plain dumb writing.

What I found most annoying was that for most of the first hour it's like an action/espionage movie with the sharks as a subplot. Given the title, shouldn't they be the main attraction?

What's with the cheesy campy comments when several of the characters are in life threatening situations? I mean really. In any of the situations given in this movie the last thing anyone would realistically think of saying when they're about to die is something funny.

I've got to think that the writers, director, and actors, all knew what they were doing but then again, maybe they just made a MEG of a mistake.

Better Than The Original
11 August 2023
This remake in every way tops the original which you seldom see in a remake. Though Steve McQueen was considered the King Of Cool, Pierce Brosnan played Crown with all the debonair and confidence required of the character without going to far.

Rene Russo was a perfect fit. Her sex appeal surpasses that of Faye Dunaway in the original but in Dunaway's defense, the censors of her day would not have allowed what Russo got away with and McQueen was against nudity in movies. It goes without saying though that Russo and Prosnan had great chemistry.

The pacing was perfect, the music much better than the original, and the ending was totally unexpected. As a minor spoiler, I like how they don't reveal how he stole the other painting. There's a lot to like about this movie.

Not McQueen's Best
10 August 2023
Unlike some of McQueen's other films which have stood the test of time, this one doesn't. Give me Bullit, The Great Escape, even Tom Horn, over this. The five star rating was only because I like Steve McQueen.

I agree with Roger Ebert in that it was very underwritten and over-photographed. I found the split screen stuff overdone and very annoying and what's up with that sound track. Please don't give me "It's the sixties" because I can give you a ton of other sixties movies with much better sound tracks than this. The music was pathetic.

The pacing was too slow for me. The sexual overtones at the chessboard were longer than they needed to be. Even the song The Windmills Of Your Mind seemed to be sung too fast. I prefer Petula Clark's version.

Make what you want of the ending it doesn't matter to me. I was just glad it finally ended. This is a rare time in which I think the remake was better particularly the ending. That one caught everyone off guard.

Not Even Close
6 August 2023
The 1972 version was vastly superior in every way. The 86 minutes versus the 138 minute version is why this horrible remake looks and feels rushed.

Michael Caine is a fine actor but he was not better than Lord Olivier in the same role and the same goes for Jude Law. He did a fine job as Doppler but still falls short of Caine's performance in the original.

It's a brave undertaking to remake a masterpiece. A huge risk for the actors and director. They all under performed. The gay overtones just don't work and they have no real place here.

The high tech home was distracting. It didn't have the charisma of the first one and the dialogue was bland. The first by comparison proves you don't need or have to have cussing to make a line of dialogue work.

Save yourself and watch the first one. It's a gem worth stealing.

It Wasn't Boring, But...
5 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The six rating was because I'm a huge Jason Statham fan and given how all his movies are action flicks with no shortage of anything and everything exaggerated, I wasn't surprised at this one.

Just how many elements can you copy from Jaws? Doggie goes in the water which of course must have been an Olympic swimming dog for it to be swimming around as long as it did before its rescue, I think that even the name of the dog was identical to the one in Jaws, Pippet, let's get in a shark cage and see if we can jab it with a poison spear tip, fat kid in the water, panic on the beach, oh and let's not forget putting a tracking device on the shark, and finally, let's blow it up.

There was no character development and a few were quite annoying. Ruby Rose... nuff said, Bingbing Li, uttered her lines in such a way leaving me wondering if she just isn't very good or is it her accent and lack of the English language, Page Kennedy was totally insufferable as the constantly complaining coward. They also need a new doctor. In talking about Lori's wound he says it missed her liver. Of course it missed her liver, her liver is on her right side not her left where the wound was. And what's with the commando outfits at night when the billionaire and his guys went hunting for the shark. Was the Meg fooled by this?

As shark movies go, there will never be another Jaws, but I still found it entertaining and paced very well. If you just sit back and take it at face value, you won't feel like you wasted your time.

My Favorite Allen Movie
4 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is such a pleasant and enjoyable movie especially for the nostalgic. Woody Allen is a magnificent screenwriter. Totally deserving of the Oscar.

The characters are very well played. Wilson's portrayal of Gil is smooth and natural. The only negative is as Hemingway pointed out, too self-effacing. Writer's are observant so how could he be so naive about his fiancee's affair? McAdams did a fine job creating an unlikable character. Who would ever want to marry someone who constantly emasculates her man in front of others? Sheen as the overbearing pedant was just as unlikeable but the actor did his job.

The scene stealer was the ravishing Marion Cotillard playing Adriana. For me, the best line was when Gertrude Stein is arguing with Picasso about his painting of Adriana claiming it had no objectivity. She then asks Gil and Ernest what they thought about Adriana as she stood in the doorway looking so beautiful, Gil responds," Absolutely lovely" But Hemingway replies " Well, you can see why he lost all objectivity." What a better way to describe her beauty and how they feel about her.

There's way too much one can pull out of this movie and if one is looking for a message it's as simple as, just make the most of the time you live in and make it down the road, someone else's golden age.

What?
2 August 2023
Let me begin that I am a fan of Roman Polanski but this is hardly a keeper at least not to me. Though I understand the slow burn as they say to build up the tension as in almost all psychological horror, it's too slow.

As an aspiring screenwriter you're told that your first ten pages really need to sell the reader or it's not going to get advanced. This would not have made it past any reader. It got made because Polanski cowrote it and directed it. It would have done better to have been made into a horror/comedy.

What was with the tooth in the wall that was clearly an animal's tooth or a vampire's. Was this a souvenir from The Fearless Vampire Killers?

There's nothing to really explain the protagonist paranoia. Why was he that way to begin with? As for the protagonist who descends into paranoia and madness I enjoyed Secret Window with Johnny Depp giving one of his better performances more than this one.

Better Than I Thought
28 July 2023
After having seen The Ninth Gate and Secret Window, I decided to go on a Johnny Depp movie spree. I looked at a list of his movies and stumbled across this lovely gem.

The dialogue and jokes were pretty good except for a few redundancies. I thought the chemistry between the actors was very good particularly between Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany.

If I had to pick a weakness it would be Olivia Munn. I don't think she's a very good actress but that really didn't matter in the role she was given since any B rated actress or less could have done it. Fortunately it didn't detract from the movie.

All in all it is fun entertainment. Too bad they didn't come back with any sequels.
